School Improvement Plan: Literacy Principal Department Heads Teachers 10%  increase for 2009-2010 school year. Enrollment information. More students registered for AP courses for 2009-2010 school year. All high school students. The student will understand the benefit of taking an AP course and feel qualified to take such course(s). Person(s) Responsible Desired Level of Performance Assessment Tools Assessment Schedule Targeted Students Student Learning Objective (SLO) Enrollment information. Increased enrollment in AP courses for the 2009-2010 school year. Ongoing throughout school year. Attend conferences that address this situation (Mass Insight). Engage in study groups to analyze why enrollment in AP courses is declining and ways to change this. Beginning in the students freshman year the teachers will begin discussing the advantages to the AP curriculum. Encourage more students to challenge themselves as they move up in grades. Teachers will promote advancement of students into higher level courses with the intent of taking AP courses. Method(s) of Collecting Information Measure(s) of Implementation Specific Timeline Resources Strategies Instructional Change Objective (ICO) 1. Insufficient promotion of Advanced Placement courses Root Causes Target: Genre GOAL STATEMENT: Franklin High School will increase the student achievement and participation rate in higher level courses. Currently (2007 data) 89% of FHS students in ELA and 85% in Math score at the Advanced and Proficient range of the MCAS exam. Scores in all subgroups will increase by 2% within two years. At Franklin High School, the number of students taking upper level courses has decreased in the past couple of years.  The target goal for the next two years is to increase those number by 10%.
School Improvement Plan: Literacy Principal Department Heads Teachers 2% increase in scores in Proficient and Advanced scoring range. MCAS Results. Prior to MCAS exam in spring 2009. All freshman and sophomore students. Students will be recipients of better teaching for better MCAS exam preparation. Increase by 2% in percentage of students in Proficient and  Advanced range. Ongoing throughout the school year. Item analysis from 2008 exam. During curriculum meeting times teachers will work together to analyze data from the 2008 MCAS exam. Teachers will do a better job at analyzing and decoding data from the MCAS exams within ELA, math and biology. Method(s) of Collecting Information Measure(s) of Implementation Specific Timeline Resources Strategies Instructional Change Objective (ICO) 2. There is not a thorough analysis of MCAS results to sufficiently change curriculum and teaching.
SIP: Communication   Response from parents. Successful distribution of report cards via email. Electronic communication  during the school year. Administration Technology Department School year. Training time and professional development for staff. Set up electronic access and distribution of school report cards. Set up email distribution list to electronically communicate newsletters, and other materials to parents. Method(s) of Collecting Information Measure(s) of Implementation Person(s) Responsible Specific Timeline Resources Strategies 1. Parents claim there is a disconnect with their high school age students and communication from the school getting home to them. Root Causes Target: Genre GOAL STATEMENT: Create a better, more efficient system to communicate with the parents of FHS students.
SIP:  School Safety Evaluation of lockdown drill. Successful lockdown drill during passing time. Principal School Resource Officer 2008-09 school year. Meeting with the FPD. Work with the Franklin Police Dept. to develop a plan for students when an emergency situation occurs during passing time or when the School  must be evacuated. Method(s) of Collecting Information Measure(s) of Implementation Person(s) Responsible Specific Timeline Resources Strategies 1. Students have done administrative lockdowns but have not taken it to the next step. Root Causes Target: Genre GOAL STATEMENT: Ensure that the students of FHS are familiar with school lockdowns, specifically what to do in passing situations and when the school must be evacuated.

  • 3. School Improvement Plan: Literacy Principal Department Heads Teachers 10% increase for 2009-2010 school year. Enrollment information. More students registered for AP courses for 2009-2010 school year. All high school students. The student will understand the benefit of taking an AP course and feel qualified to take such course(s). Increased enrollment in AP courses for the 2009-2010 school year. Ongoing throughout school year. Attend conferences that address this situation (Mass Insight). Engage in study groups to analyze why enrollment in AP courses is declining and ways to change this. Beginning in the students freshman year the teachers will begin discussing the advantages to the AP curriculum. Encourage more students to challenge themselves as they move up in grades. Teachers will promote advancement of students into higher level courses with the intent of taking AP courses. Insufficient promotion of Advanced Placement courses Root Causes Target: Genre GOAL STATEMENT: Franklin High School will increase the student achievement and participation rate in higher level courses. Currently (2007 data) 89% of FHS students in ELA and 85% in Math score at the Advanced and Proficient range of the MCAS exam. Scores in all subgroups will increase by 2% within two years. At Franklin High School, the number of students taking upper level courses has decreased in the past couple of years. The target goal for the next two years is to increase those number by 10%.
  • 4. School Improvement Plan: Literacy Principal Department Heads Teachers 2% increase in scores in Proficient and Advanced scoring range. MCAS Results. Prior to MCAS exam in spring 2009. All freshman and sophomore students. Students will be recipients of better teaching for better MCAS exam preparation. Increase by 2% in percentage of students in Proficient and Advanced range. Ongoing throughout the school year. Item analysis from 2008 exam. During curriculum meeting times teachers will work together to analyze data from the 2008 MCAS exam. Teachers will do a better job at analyzing and decoding data from the MCAS exams within ELA, math and biology. There is not a thorough analysis of MCAS results to sufficiently change curriculum and teaching.

Training time and professional development for staff. Set up electronic access and distribution of school report cards. Set up email distribution list to electronically communicate newsletters, and other materials to parents. Parents claim there is a disconnect with their high school age students and communication from the school getting home to them. Root Causes Target: Genre GOAL STATEMENT: Create a better, more efficient system to communicate with the parents of FHS students.
  • 6. SIP: School Safety Evaluation of lockdown drill. Successful lockdown drill during passing time. Principal School Resource Officer 2008-09 school year. Meeting with the FPD. Work with the Franklin Police Dept. to develop a plan for students when an emergency situation occurs during passing time or when the School must be evacuated. Students have done administrative lockdowns but have not taken it to the next step. Root Causes Target: Genre GOAL STATEMENT: Ensure that the students of FHS are familiar with school lockdowns, specifically what to do in passing situations and when the school must be evacuated.
