a Comparative Study
INTRODUCTION
• Teaching and learning are two simultaneous process of
life and development.
• There are ways, means and mechanism to do the same as
per the age, topic, requirement and objectivity.
• The young minds cannot always be dumped with
lectures.
• Youth at the Post Graduate level are mature enough to
understand and analyze.
• Hence the most acceptable mode of teaching-learning is
Discussion and Seminar method of learning.
DISCUSSION METHOD OF LEARNING
WHAT IS DISCUSSION METHOD
• Discussion method is a forum for open-ended,
collaborative exchange of ideas among:
o a teacher and students or
o among students
for the purpose of furthering students:
o thinking,
o learning,
o problem solving,
o understanding, or
o literary appreciation.
• Participants present multiple points of view, respond
to the ideas of others, and reflect on their own ideas in
an effort to:
o build their knowledge, understanding, or interpretation of
the matter at hand.

The teacher gives a problem
Student try to find a solution
Student learns on his own with the help of the
problem
KINDS OF DISCUSSION
1. Debate - a formal discussion of an issue in a classroom, at
a public meeting or in a state or national assembly
2. Small group Discussion - Students form groups and
teacher give them an issue to discuss on certain topic.
3. Round table Discussion - A round table discussion
either in the classroom or at the meeting hall in the college
4. Symposium - which experts discuss on a particular
subject. The topics of discussion are pre-decided, hence
there is lot of scope to prepare. But expectation is that you
are an “expert”.
Benefits Limitations
1. Emphasis on Learning
instead of Teaching,
2. Participation by Everybody.
3. Development of Democratic
way of Thinking.
4. Training in Reflective
Thinking.
5. Training in Self-expression.
6. Spirit of Tolerance is
inculcated.
7. Learning is made
Interesting.
1. All types of topics cannot be
taught by Discussion
Method.
2. This method cannot be used
for teaching small children.
3. The students may not follow
the rules of discussion.
4. Some students may not take
part while others may try to
dominate.
5. The teacher may not be able
to guide and provide true
leadership in the discussion.
SEMINAR METHOD OF LEARNING
WHAT IS SEMINAR
• The instructional technique which involves generating a
situation for a group to have a guided interaction among
themselves on a theme.
• It refers to a structured group discussion what usually
follows a formal lecture or lectures often in the form of a
paper presentation on a theme
• Seminar is a teaching technique for higher learning. The
lecture and its concepts submitted in the seminar are:
o analyzed and;
o discussed
through group discussion to arrive a final decision or concept

Depending upon audience, budget, gathering, venue, subject etc.
STAGES OF A SEMINAR
Preliminary Stage - Selection of
theme, Venue, Date(s), and Time, The panel of
specialists, subject experts, Chief Guests,
Preparing and circulating circular, The selection of
the speakers etc.
Seminar Stage - Ensure the physical
facilities available, Welcome the Chief Guests etc,
distribution of compendium, explaining the
seminar theme, assistance to every speaker,
Deliver of Vote of thanks etc.
Post Seminar Stage -Correction
and Compilation of the presented papers, Sending
compilation to the concerned firms, institutes,
Agencies, Government etc.
Benefits Limitations
1. Gives good motivation and
learning experience.
2. Help to evaluate the learn-
ability of learners.
3. Regulate the creating and
organizing of facts
4. Develop the self reliance and
self confidence.
5. This method is the best for
socialization.
6. Ensures the
understandability and
7. sufficient knowledge about
the concerned subject can be
developed.

• A graduate post degree program is demanding.
• In addition to your classes, the students are
expected to have a little exposure to practical
programs
• The main object of the post graduate program is to
prepare teachers for the future.
• Therefore activities like group discussions,
seminars, workshops, etc must be attended by the
students
• Develop management and interpersonal skills as
well as patience in individuals that will definitely
help them in achieving their future goals.

• As a Masters student, a person is required to do
a lot more on each module of the program.
