 Municipal waste (MSW) is a type of waste that consists of
typical, everyday items that are thrown away by the public.
 In 1994, Surat was struck by an outbreak of a virulent disease
somewhat like the plague.
 Within a span of 18 months the city made a complete reversal
from a dirty, garbage-strewn city to become one of the
cleanest cities in the country.

 To devise a system of storage of waste and segregation of recyclable
waste at source.
 To devise more efficient system of day to day cleaning,
conventionally and mechanically.
 To devise system to eliminate practices of throwing garbage on the
road causing nuisance & health threat.
 To eliminate manual handling of waste and open transportation
vehicles.
 To reduce quantity of waste going to landfill site by adopting
suitable technology.
 Land to be acquired for other landfill disposal site.
 To ensure safe disposal of waste including bio-medical wastes.
 To do institutional strengthening.
 To have public participation.

 Strengthening of the existing system of garbage collection.
 Creating public awareness on garbage management through
campaign.
 Centralized complaint management system with modern
communication facilities.

 Biodegradable waste: food and kitchen waste, green waste, paper (most can be recycled
although some difficult to compost plant material may be excluded)
 Recyclable materials: paper, cardboard, glass, bottles, jars, tin cans, aluminum
cans, aluminum foil, metals, fabrics, clothes, batteries, etc.
 Inert waste: construction and demolition waste, dirt, rocks, debris.
 Electrical and electronic waste: electrical appliances, light bulbs, washing
machines, TVs, computers, screens, mobile phones, alarm clocks, watches, etc.
 Composite wastes: waste clothing, Tetra Packs, waste plastics such as toys.
 Hazardous waste including most paints, chemicals, tires, batteries, light bulbs, electrical
appliances, fluorescent lamps, aerosol spray cans, and fertilizers.
 Toxic waste including pesticides, herbicides, and fungicides.
 Biomedical waste, expired pharmaceutical drugs, etc.

 Sweeping during day time.

 Quantity of M.S.W. generation : 1575.000 M.T. (350 gpcd)
 Collection and transportation : 1499.440 M.T. per day
(Average of 01/04/13 to 31/03/14)

 At present civil work are under progress for two "Semi close
body" transfer stations namely Dindoli and Kosad, where as
other two Simada and Gaviyer transfer stations construction
activities to be started very soon.
 Plastic waste and Organic collection and treatment facility
(PPP mode) to come up.
 Sanitary land fill cell-The Sanitary Land Fill cell (SLF) of
capacity 1,25,000 cu.mt. and second SLF cell capacity of
6,25,000 cu.mt. both are in utilization.
 Segregation at source- One ward in each zone selected for
segregated collection of M.S.W. as Dry waste and wet waste.

  • 3.  Municipal waste (MSW) is a type of waste that consists of typical, everyday items that are thrown away by the public.  In 1994, Surat was struck by an outbreak of a virulent disease somewhat like the plague.  Within a span of 18 months the city made a complete reversal from a dirty, garbage-strewn city to become one of the cleanest cities in the country. 3
  • 4.  To devise a system of storage of waste and segregation of recyclable waste at source.  To devise more efficient system of day to day cleaning, conventionally and mechanically.  To devise system to eliminate practices of throwing garbage on the road causing nuisance & health threat.  To eliminate manual handling of waste and open transportation vehicles.  To reduce quantity of waste going to landfill site by adopting suitable technology.  Land to be acquired for other landfill disposal site.  To ensure safe disposal of waste including bio-medical wastes.  To do institutional strengthening.  To have public participation. 4
  • 5.  Strengthening of the existing system of garbage collection.  Creating public awareness on garbage management through campaign.  Centralized complaint management system with modern communication facilities. 5
  • 6.  Biodegradable waste: food and kitchen waste, green waste, paper (most can be recycled although some difficult to compost plant material may be excluded)  Recyclable materials: paper, cardboard, glass, bottles, jars, tin cans, aluminum cans, aluminum foil, metals, fabrics, clothes, batteries, etc.  Inert waste: construction and demolition waste, dirt, rocks, debris.  Electrical and electronic waste: electrical appliances, light bulbs, washing machines, TVs, computers, screens, mobile phones, alarm clocks, watches, etc.  Composite wastes: waste clothing, Tetra Packs, waste plastics such as toys.  Hazardous waste including most paints, chemicals, tires, batteries, light bulbs, electrical appliances, fluorescent lamps, aerosol spray cans, and fertilizers.  Toxic waste including pesticides, herbicides, and fungicides.  Biomedical waste, expired pharmaceutical drugs, etc. 6

  • 17.  At present civil work are under progress for two "Semi close body" transfer stations namely Dindoli and Kosad, where as other two Simada and Gaviyer transfer stations construction activities to be started very soon.  Plastic waste and Organic collection and treatment facility (PPP mode) to come up.  Sanitary land fill cell-The Sanitary Land Fill cell (SLF) of capacity 1,25,000 cu.mt. and second SLF cell capacity of 6,25,000 cu.mt. both are in utilization.  Segregation at source- One ward in each zone selected for segregated collection of M.S.W. as Dry waste and wet waste. 17
