2. Record labels.
A record label is a brand and a trademark associated with
the marketing of music recordings and the music videos. A
record label company would pay for everything that needs
to be done in order to complete their artists’ CD; these
things would include paying for the recording of the songs,
mixing the songs so that all of the songs can be heard,
mastering which is sorting out the final copy and pressing,
which is actually making the CD. If the CD was successful,
then the money that it makes would be given back to the
company but if it isn't successful and no money is made,
then it is unlikely that the artist would stay signed to that
record label.
3. There are two types of record labels; independent and
major. Independent record labels are small organisations
who work with local and underground artists. Major record
labels are under control from a “music group” which is a
sub-organisation owned by a global conglomerate; this
record label has huge fundings which allows the signed
artists to be promoted easily and in the best way possible.
My artist would be signed to an independent record label
because they would be a new artist and therefore they
wouldn’t have that much of a fan base to start with so they
wouldn’t know whether they would be successful or not.
They would also only have a small budget to spend on
promoting themselves and to make the music video.
4. What existing record label would your artist be
most suited to?
I think that my artist would be most suited to 679 Artists’ record
label. 679 Artists is a Warner Music Group-owned record label
based in London, England. They have signed artists like Marina
and The Diamonds, Plan B, The Streets and Death From Above
1979. They sign different genre of artists so that they are able to
appeal to a wider audience. My artist would be suited to this
record label because they sign smaller, unknown artists and
make them well-known.
5. 679 Artists.
679 Artists was is named "679" as this was the address
of the Pure Groove record shop on Holloway Road.
Their first release was The Streets' debut, Original
Pirate Material. The founder of 679 Artists has recently
made another record label called 37 Adventures.
6. Copyright.
Copyright is the exclusive right of protection for a creator of original work.
Copyright gives the creators of some types of media rights to control how
they're used and distributed. The rights cover: Broadcast and public
performance, copying, adapting, issuing, renting and lending copies to the
public. Record labels have control over their artists songs, they have copyright
over those songs. Record labels own the songs that their artist produces and
they have rights over them.
What must I consider when using copyrighted music? What am I not allowed
to do in my music video? What am I allowed to do?
When I am making my music video I have to make sure that I am keeping to
strict rules as I will be using copyrighted music. I have to make sure that it is
clear that I am only using this music for my media studies and that I won’t
make any financial gain from it. I also have to make sure that I do not copy the
artists music video and that it is for my own private use. I can use their music
if I ask for permission, if I don’t ask for permission to use their music then I
would not be able to carry on making the music video to that song.
7. How are you going to use what you have learned about
record labels and copyright in your productions?
I have learned what I can and what I cant do when
making my music video, this will help me in my
productions as I will know if I should include something
or not. When creating my own record label I will make
sure that I put my logo on every piece of product that I
make so that my consumers know that I own that
artist, I will also make sure that I put a copyright on my
artist so that none of their music can be claimed as
someone else's. I now know that when making my
record label logo I know not to use another label’s logo
and name as they have copyright over their name and
picture.
8. My record label.
My record label is called “Broken Records” and
we are an independent record label. We have
created a logo for our label and it is:
9. Broken Records
Our label only signs local artists as we are an
independent record label. We only focus on one type of
genre, which is pop-rock because we want to get this
genre of music popular and back on the market. By only
having one genre we are limiting our audience as we
would only appeal to one group. Other artists that we
would like to sign would be The Kooks, McFly and Biffy
Clyro.
