The Compare/ Contrast Essay
First, let's explain compare and contrast:
When we compare, we show our readers a subject's similarities.
When we contrast, we show our readers a subject's differences.
Compare and Contrast essays are learning–process essays. You learn about your subject as you
gather and organize information.
This type of essay takes a bit of organization, and it's this organizational process, this gathering of
facts, that helps you learn as you go.
You will create lists of qualities or traits that each of your subjects has, and as you do this, you will
discover insights to your subject that, at first glance, you may not have realized were there.
It's like buying a new shirt. The moment you spread it out on...show more content...
And you will either compare or contrast, not both. Be careful, sometimes going point by point can
make your writing sound tedious and repetitive. Watch your language and transition words. Use
several points at a time.
Ending: As in the argumentative essay, bring it all together. Allow your ending to go back to your
thesis. Use the transitional words on the next page to help your paper's coherence. Transitions and
other connecting words and connecting sentences should be used throughout.
Remember: There are no hard and fast rules as to how many comparisons or contrasts you should
offer. For a thorough look into your subject, you must offer enough comparisons or contrasts or both
to make a valid statement.
Transitional Words (Conjunctival Adverbs)
Use these words to help you connect your thoughts, your sentences, and your paragraphs:

Compare and Contrast Economic Market Systems In differentiating between market structures one
has to compare and contrast public goods, private goods, common resources, and natural
monopolies. All of these are major factors that need to be considered. Public goods are those goods
in which all of society benefit from and are equally shared among everyone within. These types of
goods can be consumed simultaneously by several individuals without diminishing the value of
consumption to any individual. The act of public goods being consumed by several individuals and
not allow its value to diminish is known as non–rivalry. When shown graphically, non–rivalry shows

Inexperienced teachers have a good subject specialism, this is generally fresh from their training,
however not much practical experience in the classroom and dealing with difficult situations.
"For many newly qualified teachers, while pupils provide the ultimate reward in teaching, their
poor behavior was often the cause of the major low points". In some aspects there is very little
difference in experienced or new teachers in relation to their knowledge in their subject, both
should know their subject well and keep their knowledge updated on a regular basis. Also both
want to make a difference to their students' life, to teach them to the best of their capability.
However there are differences in how they teach their subject, how they come across to their
students and how they manage their classrooms. More experienced teachers will be more confident
in their approach, more prepared to deal with a variety of learning needs, have made mistakes in the
past and learned from these to better prepare themselves for the future. Generally new teachers lack
the confidence to teach which can only be gained through experience, they need to learn what works
and what does not, reflect on this and incorporate this into their next lesson. New teachers do
however have a willingness to learn, to adapt, and to mould themselves into a confident and
knowledge teacher. In conclusion my insight into the differences and similarities of both the

Cleaning with Barry and Britt
The act of being habitually and carefully neat and clean can make for an interesting topic in a
comparison and contrast essay. Dave Barry compares the differences of how women and men clean
in his compare and contrast essay, Batting Clean– Up and Striking out. In Suzanne Britt's compare
and contrast essay, Neat People vs. Sloppy People she compares the differences of personalities
between Sloppy people and neat people. Both essays compare cleanliness in one way or another
however they both have differences regarding their use of humor, examples, and points made in their
thesis.
Batting Clean–Up and Striking out and Neat People vs. Sloppy People both offer...show more

The way Barry and Britt support their points in their compare and contrast essays differ. In Batting
Clean–Up and Striking Out, Barry uses lots of personal stories and factual happenings to explain his
opinions. For example, to explain how men are worse at cleaning Barry specifically refers to a
volcano eruption that happened in Pompei because the men, who were in control of the cleaning,
did not notice ashes piling up around and in their houses. In addition, when describing how men
are better with sports than woman he refers to a personal story; specifically a story about a dinner
party that he attended where the men were glued to the World Series and the women were still
chatting amongst themselves. These forms of examples are personal stories that offer validity. On
the other hand, in Britt's Neat people vs. Sloppy people she uses more dreamt up incidences to
explain her opinions. For example when explaining how neat people are "viscous with their mail"
she explains, " All ads, catalogs, pleas for charitable contributions, church bulletins, and
money–saving coupons go straight into the trash can without being opened...No sentimental
salvaging of birthday cards or the last letter a dying relative ever wrote. Into the trash it goes" (256).
As seen in this example, Britt uses lots of lists and possible incidents that could exist to support her
points, but do these incidences

To Build A Fire Compare And Contrast Essay
The contrasts between young and old are very definitive. The contrast between the two shows itself
very prominently in To Build a Fire. Even though the old man at Sulfur Creek tells the man not to go
out alone, the man abandons the advice and ventures out alone with his dog into the Yukon. The old
man was right, the younger man should have listened instead of being arrogant. He should have
gone with someone and kept himself safe. Even though it may not seem like it, the entire story
revolves around the man's decision to travel alone into the Yukonand simply discard the old man's
advice.
The man's decision to go out alone into the barren Yukon was an extremely important decision, the
decision he made would cost him his life in the end. I think...show more content...
The only way I wouldn't have done the same is if the weather had varied and looked worse than it
normally did. I think a few things that played a part in the man's decision to go alone were, he is
younger and stronger than the old man and he is arrogant and thinks he is smarter. Another
reason might be because they are always in the weather and it never really varies, so as a result
the man might think that the weather is harmless to him. I think the reason I would do the same
thing as the younger man is because I have defied my elders' advice in the past. I think that many
of the youth, including myself think that they know better than their parents or any elders. For
instance, just a couple years ago my dad and I were spending the weekend with my aunt. She
lives on a farm and my uncle and I were riding ATV's, while earlier she had told me to slow down.
Of course because I thought I was fine and had it under control, I discarded her advice. After
about twenty minutes of riding around I had torn into a pasture and through an electric fence,
simply because I didn't listen to her. I regret not listening to her because I ended up with some
pretty nasty bruises and causes a couple hundred dollars worth of damage. My experience in not
listening to the wiser, older people was a mere comparison to the younger man in the story, whereas
he lost his life.
The man trekking across the Yukon is young

How to Write a Compare and Contrast Essay
Instructions of How to Write a Compare and Contrast Essay
1
First look at the items you are supposed to compare and contrast. Do you understand them? If you
are writing an essay outside of class, look them up. Start with your text book but also look at your
notes from class, and even go and check them out at Wikipedia. If you are taking a test, and can't
look things up, pause and think over what these things mean. The next two steps will help you
remember.
2
Make a list of ways the two items are the same. This is the "compare" part of a compare and contrast
essay. (For an in class essay, it will be good if you can bring in extra paper. If you can't, you can
make some notes on the back of your blue book.)
Sponsored Links...show more content...
If you feel they are more different than the same, start by comparing the similarities.
7
Now get to your point of view. If you are writing a classic "five paragraph essay" you may want to
spend a whole paragraph pointing out what is wrong with the arguments you made for the other
side. If don't have to meet a specific number of paragraphs, you can just get straight to supporting
your own point of view. Look at your list items that support you, and write about them all, and why
they are important.
8
With compare and contrast essays, the conclusion will be a lot like the introduction. You summarize
what you just said. You may find that some points came up in writing that you hadn't put in your
intro. This is a good time to refer back to those.
9
If this is not an in–class essay test, you should try to set the essay aside after you finish, so you can
go back later with your mind fresh. You may come up with a few other items you want to talk about
on your compare or contrast list. You may come up with a better way to write your introduction or
conclusion.
If you can master how to write compare and contrast essays, you will find that you can use that form
for a lot of other essays when the instructor doesn't give you a format.

Compare And Contrast Traditional Teaching Styles
No teachers are similar as well as no students learn in the same way. Every teacher has their own
unique teaching style which is based on their educational philosophy, their classroom's demographic,
what subject area they teach, and the school's mission statement. Up until now, teachers are looking
for a system that will engage students in the educational process and will develop the students'
critical thinking skills. Moreover, teachers want the classroom to be in order and in control, but they
also want their students to appreciate the learning procedure. These teaching styles can be divided
into two approaches – the teacher–centered and learner–centered.
Traditional teaching styles use teacher–centered approach. It includes a teacher that stands at the
front and tells students step by step instructions. The teacher decides what is learned, when it is
learned, how it is learned, and how learning is evaluated. In a nutshell, the teacher is an information
giver and evaluator. The students are just there to learn through lessons and direct instructions. Their
attention is mainly focused on passing tests, assessments, and evaluations.
Through the years, many successful people have came from the traditional setting. The earliest
recorded occurrence of education proved that people learned in a...show more content...
Students are placed in the responsibility of their own learning and understanding while the teachers
encourage students to be more independent and more exploratory. The teachers will foster a sense
of autonomy in the learning process as they act as a source of experiences. In addition, as the
students watch their teacher makes mistakes, they will learn those failures are part of the learning
process. The students will soon realize that mistakes are natural in life and it will serve as stepping

Because I'm a foreign student from Belgium, I thought it would be interesting to compare and

two randomly chosen countries who are pretty much equal too each other. You are absolutely wrong,
if this was your first thought. If you take a closer look to both countries, you will see some huge
differences between them. Belgium, a really small country, is located in northwestern Europe. The

According the article from CNN 'Delta State shooting: Police seek suspect after history professor

Another similar example happened on December 15 2012. According to the article from BBC

six adults at a primary school in the US state of Connecticut.
"The United States has the highest rates of firearm–related deaths (including homicide, suicide, and

Chapter 16, Comparison and Contrast, explains the purpose and functions of comparison and/or
contrast essays as well as how to use them in students' essays. Comparison and contrast means
finding similarities, differences, or both. Comparison and contrast essays commonly have three
purposes. First, they are important in expressing ideas. For example, I want to talk about my ideas
about hip–hop and rap music so I compare and contrast them. The second purpose is to inform
people. I may want to tell the audience that there are many similarities in two different religions.
Third, I can persuade people through comparing and contrasting two things. For instance, I will
argue that reading e–books is better than printed books by comparing and contrasting

"Young Goodman Brown" and "The Lottery"
By: Melissa A. Reeves
Professor Andrew Smith
ENGL 102–B46 LUO
Thesis Statement
The stories "The Lottery" and "Young Goodman Brown" both appear to show that human behavior
and judgment can be flawed, even if the person's intentions appear good to them. There is a level of
fear and underlying evil in Puritan settings in both stories.
I. Introduction/Statement of Thesis
II. Themes and Author's Purpose A. The Lottery i. Just because something has always been done,
does not make it right or just; following the crowd can be dangerously wrong and evil. ii. The author

The theme of the story "The Lottery" is blind acceptance of something just because it is considered
tradition. In Jackson's "The Lottery", symbols are utilized to help show the theme. The name of the
story, "The Lottery", itself is a symbol. The term lottery can be viewed, by most, as a good thing, a
hope in winning, but winning the lottery takes on a very different, very dark meaning in
Jackson's story. Also, the names of the characters are symbols as well. For example, Graves is a
name that would portray death and Summers is a bright and cheerful name. Also, the name Old
Man Warner would show tradition. Next, is the use of the black box and the black dot on the
paper. The color black is showing darkness, evil, and death. The tradition of the black box is a
symbol, in the fact that it is worn and faded, but still used by the villagers. Shirley Jackson
conveys the theme very clearly through the use of symbols. In the end, the villagers are shown to
be evil and murderous just because of tradition. The villagers do not seem to have a problem with
murdering others within the lottery because it is what they have always done and no one is going to
declare that what they are doing is wrong. This shows the reader that following blindly can have
dangerous consequences. The theme of "Young BrownGoodman" is that the main character is
basing his beliefs and faith on what others in his life believe or have faith in. The theme of "Young

1. The two types of organization that may be used in a compare/contrast essay would be either block

Marriage; a road to imprisonment
Kate Chopin's "Story of an Hour," and Charlotte Gilman's "The Yellow Wallpaper," present similar
plots about two wives who have grown to feel imprisoned in their own marriages. "The Yellow
Wallpaper," focuses on a woman who feels so entrapped in her own marriage that she begins to
feel this type of isolation and imprisonment all around her. She begins to feel as though the room,
in which she is being forced to stay in is a prison in itself. "Story of an Hour," has a similar plot of a
woman in an unhappy marriage. This woman however, momentarily escapes her unhappiness when
she comes to find out that her husband was thought to have been killed...show more content...
This represents the same feelings she is having at the time, the feelings of being trapped and
desperate to escape. The differences and similarities in the characterization of this story is also an
important aspect to compare; with Chopin describing her character through reactions and Gillman
describing hers through her actions and conflicts. Chopin describes the main character in "Story
of An Hour," by her reaction to her husband's death, as well as through her speech and gestures.
Her reaction to her husband's death suggests that she is in conflict with herself in regards to the
emotions she is feelings. She feels a new found sense of freedom with her husband gone, but is in
conflict in regards to how she feels about his actual death. Her speech and gestures are also used
to describe her character. She continues to repeat "free," and exits her bedroom in a happy and
joyous manner. This characterization makes her a round and dynamic character in this story, much
like the round and dynamic character in Gilman's writing. Although they are both round and
dynamic, Gilman portrays the main character by her actions as well as her women vs. man
conflict. Every action of the main character in "Yellow Wallpaper," is that of a woman who feels
confined and isolated. She is constantly looking for ways to defy her husband and escape the
confines of the room he has trapped her in. Her feeling of confinement and isolation are the

COMPARISON AND CONTRAST ESSAY

Definition: In this kind of essay, the aim is to show the similarities and differences of two items, two
people, two countries, or how something or someone has changed. When comparing two things, we
focus more on the similarities though we may mention the differences shortly. When contrasting two
things, we point out the differences between them. The most important point to consider while
planning a comparison and contrast essay is choosing comparable items. e.g. Middle East Technical

to be compared. After writing the comparable points as a list, location, size, reputation, ...show more

Compare and Contrast Essay By definition; love is a profoundly tender, passionate affection for
another person. Love can be interrupted in many ways. Were we ever taught love or is it just a
natural feeling towards a person? Some say you'll know the meaning of love when you fall in love,
yet some don't believe in love at all.
The sculpture "LOVE" created by Robert Indiana and the sculpture "The Kiss" made by Auguste
Rodin both share some of the same meanings behind the art work (Indianapolis Museum of Art)

"The Kiss" is more of a classic form of art and has been placed in more private areas. Although it has
a distressing grey color "The Kiss" has more depth; the feeling of intimacy is strong and makes a
statement.
There are both similarities and differences in "The Kiss" and "LOVE". The emotion and meaning
behind both are incredible, it shows and understands the meanings of love, lust, joy, and intimacy.
Love can either be spelt out or expressed by action and is what both pieces show. Love can be
interrupted in many ways, but there always has to be a kiss in love.

Compare and Contrast
Cars and SUVs
Micheal Williams
ENG121
July 25, 2011
In this economy people have a really hard time deciding on type of the car they should buy. I
recently had the same problem when I was deciding if I should get something big and more
comfortable or something smaller and that wouldn't use as much gas. In this paper I will write
about pros and cons on purchasing a car or a SUV. The type of car and SUV I will write about are
Nissan Sentra and Nissan pathfinder. The reason I chose these type is because I am familiar with
both of them.
The first one I am going to talk about is Nissan Sentra. The type I am going to talk about is 2011
Nissan Sentra 2.0 SR Sedan. This type of Nissan has 16x6.5in alloy wheels, steel spare wheel, all

This SUV is good for big families and if you travel a lot because it's comfortable. It's true that this
SUV cost more than the regular car but you get more features with it, it's safer, and more powerful.
The best way to choose which type of vehicle to get is to see which one is going to work in long run
for you and your family.

  • 2. Compare and Contrast The Compare/ Contrast Essay First, let's explain compare and contrast: When we compare, we show our readers a subject's similarities. When we contrast, we show our readers a subject's differences. Compare and Contrast essays are learning–process essays. You learn about your subject as you gather and organize information. This type of essay takes a bit of organization, and it's this organizational process, this gathering of facts, that helps you learn as you go. You will create lists of qualities or traits that each of your subjects has, and as you do this, you will discover insights to your subject that, at first glance, you may not have realized were there. It's like buying a new shirt. The moment you spread it out on...show more content... And you will either compare or contrast, not both. Be careful, sometimes going point by point can make your writing sound tedious and repetitive. Watch your language and transition words. Use several points at a time. Ending: As in the argumentative essay, bring it all together. Allow your ending to go back to your thesis. Use the transitional words on the next page to help your paper's coherence. Transitions and other connecting words and connecting sentences should be used throughout. Remember: There are no hard and fast rules as to how many comparisons or contrasts you should offer. For a thorough look into your subject, you must offer enough comparisons or contrasts or both to make a valid statement. Transitional Words (Conjunctival Adverbs) Use these words to help you connect your thoughts, your sentences, and your paragraphs: (Lest you wish to sound pedantic, tiptoe with caution through words such as "indeed," and "of course.") addition again, also, and, and then, besides, equally important, finally, first, further, furthermore, in addition, in the first place, last, moreover, next, second, still, too comparison also, in the same way, likewise, similarly

These types of goods can be consumed simultaneously by several individuals without diminishing the value of consumption to any individual. Inexperienced teachers have a good subject specialism, this is generally fresh from their training, however not much practical experience in the classroom and dealing with difficult situations. "For many newly qualified teachers, while pupils provide the ultimate reward in teaching, their poor behavior was often the cause of the major low points". In some aspects there is very little difference in experienced or new teachers in relation to their knowledge in their subject, both should know their subject well and keep their knowledge updated on a regular basis. Also both want to make a difference to their students' life, to teach them to the best of their capability. However there are differences in how they teach their subject, how they come across to their students and how they manage their classrooms. More experienced teachers will be more confident in their approach, more prepared to deal with a variety of learning needs, have made mistakes in the past and learned from these to better prepare themselves for the future. Generally new teachers lack the confidence to teach which can only be gained through experience, they need to learn what works and what does not, reflect on this and incorporate this into their next lesson. New teachers do however have a willingness to learn, to adapt, and to mould themselves into a confident and knowledge teacher. In conclusion my insight into the differences and similarities of both the experienced and Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Dave Barry compares the differences of how women and men clean in his compare and contrast essay, Batting Clean– Up and Striking out. In Suzanne Britt's compare and contrast essay, Neat People vs. Sloppy People she compares the differences of personalities between Sloppy people and neat people. In Batting Clean–Up and Striking Out, Barry uses lots of personal stories and factual happenings to explain his opinions. For example, to explain how men are worse at cleaning Barry specifically refers to a volcano eruption that happened in Pompei because the men, who were in control of the cleaning, did not notice ashes piling up around and in their houses. In addition, when describing how men are better with sports than woman he refers to a personal story; specifically a story about a dinner party that he attended where the men were glued to the World Series and the women were still chatting amongst themselves. These forms of examples are personal stories that offer validity. On the other hand, in Britt's Neat people vs. Sloppy people she uses more dreamt up incidences to explain her opinions. For example when explaining how neat people are "viscous with their mail" she explains, " All ads, catalogs, pleas for charitable contributions, church bulletins, and money–saving coupons go straight into the trash can without being opened...No sentimental salvaging of birthday cards or the last letter a dying relative ever wrote. Into the trash it goes" (256). Even though the old man at Sulfur Creek tells the man not to go out alone, the man abandons the advice and ventures out alone with his dog into the Yukon. The old man was right, the younger man should have listened instead of being arrogant. He should have gone with someone and kept himself safe. Even though it may not seem like it, the entire story revolves around the man's decision to travel alone into the Yukonand simply discard the old man's advice. The only way I wouldn't have done the same is if the weather had varied and looked worse than it normally did. I think a few things that played a part in the man's decision to go alone were, he is younger and stronger than the old man and he is arrogant and thinks he is smarter. Another reason might be because they are always in the weather and it never really varies, so as a result the man might think that the weather is harmless to him. I think the reason I would do the same thing as the younger man is because I have defied my elders' advice in the past. I think that many of the youth, including myself think that they know better than their parents or any elders. For instance, just a couple years ago my dad and I were spending the weekend with my aunt. She lives on a farm and my uncle and I were riding ATV's, while earlier she had told me to slow down. Of course because I thought I was fine and had it under control, I discarded her advice. After about twenty minutes of riding around I had torn into a pasture and through an electric fence, simply because I didn't listen to her. I regret not listening to her because I ended up with some pretty nasty bruises and causes a couple hundred dollars worth of damage. My experience in not listening to the wiser, older people was a mere comparison to the younger man in the story, whereas he lost his life. • 9. How to Write a Compare and Contrast Essay Instructions of How to Write a Compare and Contrast Essay 1 First look at the items you are supposed to compare and contrast. Do you understand them? If you are writing an essay outside of class, look them up. Start with your text book but also look at your notes from class, and even go and check them out at Wikipedia. If you are taking a test, and can't look things up, pause and think over what these things mean. The next two steps will help you remember. 2 Make a list of ways the two items are the same. This is the "compare" part of a compare and contrast essay. (For an in class essay, it will be good if you can bring in extra paper. If you can't, you can make some notes on the back of your blue book.) Sponsored Links...show more content... If you feel they are more different than the same, start by comparing the similarities. 7 Now get to your point of view. If you are writing a classic "five paragraph essay" you may want to spend a whole paragraph pointing out what is wrong with the arguments you made for the other side. If don't have to meet a specific number of paragraphs, you can just get straight to supporting your own point of view. Look at your list items that support you, and write about them all, and why they are important. 8 With compare and contrast essays, the conclusion will be a lot like the introduction. You summarize what you just said. You may find that some points came up in writing that you hadn't put in your intro. This is a good time to refer back to those. 9 If this is not an in–class essay test, you should try to set the essay aside after you finish, so you can go back later with your mind fresh. You may come up with a few other items you want to talk about on your compare or contrast list. You may come up with a better way to write your introduction or conclusion. If you can master how to write compare and contrast essays, you will find that you can use that form for a lot of other essays when the instructor doesn't give you a format. Every teacher has their own unique teaching style which is based on their educational philosophy, their classroom's demographic, what subject area they teach, and the school's mission statement. Up until now, teachers are looking for a system that will engage students in the educational process and will develop the students' critical thinking skills. Moreover, teachers want the classroom to be in order and in control, but they also want their students to appreciate the learning procedure. These teaching styles can be divided into two approaches – the teacher–centered and learner–centered. Traditional teaching styles use teacher–centered approach. It includes a teacher that stands at the front and tells students step by step instructions. The teacher decides what is learned, when it is learned, how it is learned, and how learning is evaluated. In a nutshell, the teacher is an information giver and evaluator. The students are just there to learn through lessons and direct instructions. Their attention is mainly focused on passing tests, assessments, and evaluations. Through the years, many successful people have came from the traditional setting. Comparison And Contrast Essay Topics Chapter 16, Comparison and Contrast, explains the purpose and functions of comparison and/or contrast essays as well as how to use them in students' essays. Comparison and contrast means finding similarities, differences, or both. Comparison and contrast essays commonly have three purposes. First, they are important in expressing ideas. For example, I want to talk about my ideas about hip–hop and rap music so I compare and contrast them. The second purpose is to inform people. I may want to tell the audience that there are many similarities in two different religions. Third, I can persuade people through comparing and contrasting two things. Reeves Professor Andrew Smith ENGL 102–B46 LUO Thesis Statement The stories "The Lottery" and "Young Goodman Brown" both appear to show that human behavior and judgment can be flawed, even if the person's intentions appear good to them. There is a level of fear and underlying evil in Puritan settings in both stories. I. Introduction/Statement of Thesis II. Themes and Author's Purpose A. The Lottery i. The theme of the story "The Lottery" is blind acceptance of something just because it is considered tradition. In Jackson's "The Lottery", symbols are utilized to help show the theme. The name of the story, "The Lottery", itself is a symbol. The term lottery can be viewed, by most, as a good thing, a hope in winning, but winning the lottery takes on a very different, very dark meaning in Jackson's story. Also, the names of the characters are symbols as well. For example, Graves is a name that would portray death and Summers is a bright and cheerful name. Also, the name Old Man Warner would show tradition. Next, is the use of the black box and the black dot on the paper. The color black is showing darkness, evil, and death. The tradition of the black box is a symbol, in the fact that it is worn and faded, but still used by the villagers. Shirley Jackson conveys the theme very clearly through the use of symbols. In the end, the villagers are shown to be evil and murderous just because of tradition. The villagers do not seem to have a problem with murdering others within the lottery because it is what they have always done and no one is going to declare that what they are doing is wrong. This shows the reader that following blindly can have dangerous consequences. • 16. Compare/Contrast 1. The two types of organization that may be used in a compare/contrast essay would be either block or point–by–point. With block, the first set of paragraphs covers one item completely and then the other set of paragraphs covers the other item completely. In point–by–point, each point is addressed in a separate paragraph, alternating between both subjects. 2. One thing I learned from reading this overview was the different types of methods there are when comparing and contrasting two subjects. I didn't know there were specific ways to organize just in general. As well as how point by point has a stronger effect on readers. 3. • 17. Compare and Contrast Essay Lauren Ehlers Dr. St. John English 102 March 25, 2011 Marriage; a road to imprisonment Kate Chopin's "Story of an Hour," and Charlotte Gilman's "The Yellow Wallpaper," present similar plots about two wives who have grown to feel imprisoned in their own marriages. "The Yellow Wallpaper," focuses on a woman who feels so entrapped in her own marriage that she begins to feel this type of isolation and imprisonment all around her. She begins to feel as though the room, in which she is being forced to stay in is a prison in itself. "Story of an Hour," has a similar plot of a woman in an unhappy marriage. This woman however, momentarily escapes her unhappiness when she comes to find out that her husband was thought to have been killed...show more content... This represents the same feelings she is having at the time, the feelings of being trapped and desperate to escape. The differences and similarities in the characterization of this story is also an important aspect to compare; with Chopin describing her character through reactions and Gillman describing hers through her actions and conflicts. Chopin describes the main character in "Story of An Hour," by her reaction to her husband's death, as well as through her speech and gestures. Her reaction to her husband's death suggests that she is in conflict with herself in regards to the emotions she is feelings. She feels a new found sense of freedom with her husband gone, but is in conflict in regards to how she feels about his actual death. Her speech and gestures are also used to describe her character. She continues to repeat "free," and exits her bedroom in a happy and joyous manner. This characterization makes her a round and dynamic character in this story, much like the round and dynamic character in Gilman's writing. Although they are both round and dynamic, Gilman portrays the main character by her actions as well as her women vs. man conflict. Every action of the main character in "Yellow Wallpaper," is that of a woman who feels confined and isolated. She is constantly looking for ways to defy her husband and escape the confines of the room he has trapped her in. Her feeling of confinement and isolation are the Get more content on HelpWriting.net
