CAROLINA M. STEVENSON
I am an architect with a PhD and more than 16 years experience
in teaching, research and academic administration at university
level. I have had the opportunity to work as a lecturer at The
University of Los Andes and The National University in Colombia,
as well as, The University of Nottingham and The University of
Liverpool in England. I have a well-established track record of
publications and research grants. In addition, I have worked in
practice in both countries. My experiences have broadened my
perspectives and allowed me to grow personally, professionally
and as a member of a community. I have a positive attitude
towards life and value collaborative work, ethics, discipline and
self improvement.
January 2012 – July 2016
Lecturer, Architecture Department, University of Los Andes, Colombia (Full time)
As a researcher, I obtained internal and external research funding to led projects in the
areas of architectural education, environmental comfort in buildings, kinetic structures
and adaptability. I disseminated the outcomes of these projects at competitions and
events and published in high impact journals. I was part of the research group ARTS -
Architecture Technology and Sustainability - and the supervisor of 6 M.Arch theses. As
a teacher, I designed, coordinated and taught different undergraduate and
postgraduate modules, including modules using ICT tools, blended learning and
inverted class formats. I also led 15 academic Live Projects, where students worked
with communities and private companies to designed and built small architectural
projects. As an academic administrator, I organised events and exhibitions and was the
editor of the magazine Proyectos, published 4 times a year.
January 2007 -December 2011
Lecturer, School of Architecture, University of Liverpool, UK (Full time)
As a researcher, I was part of the research group TAARU - Transportable and
Adaptable Architecture Research Unit- where I developed the project titled Kinetic
architecture: Designing with movement and supervised PhD thesis. I disseminated the
outcomes of this project at conferences and publications. I was and active member of
the IASS -International Association for Shell and Spatial Structures. My teaching and
administrative responsibilities included being co-head of BA2 (of RIBA part 1), co-
ordinator of second year design studio modules and lecturer of structures and
construction modules at undergraduate level. I help organising academic events
including the International Winter School: ‘MULTIPLI-CITIES’ 2008.
March 2002 - December 2006
Tutor, School of The Built Environment, University of Nottingham, UK (part time)
I worked as a part-time tutor and a unit leader for the 1st year studio. I regularly
participated in tutorials, reviews, marking and as a guest lecturer for the 1st and 2nd year
Structures and Architectural Construction modules.
January- December 1999
Teaching assistant, Universidad Nacional de Colombia.
Xiloteca and Master in Construction.
April 2003 - December 2006
Architect, Marsh and Grochowski Architects, Nottingham, UK
I was involved in diverse types of projects at this practice, including feasibility studies,
design competitions, commercial and residential design. I have worked at different
stages within these projects, from design and concept development, planning
application, production of working and detail drawings, to tender stage and supervision
during construction.
June 2000 September 2001
Architect, Hedra Arquitectura, Bogotá, Colombia
I participated in the team that founded this company. My role was to coordinate small
design projects and successfully market company products including retractable
systems for exhibitions and furniture.
July - December 1999
Architect, Legarda y Lian Arquitectos, Bogotá, Colombia
I worked as an adviser in the design and construction of small retractable structures for
fairs and exhibitions.

EDUCATION
January 2007 - November 2009
CPS - Certificate in Professional Studies in
Learning and Teaching in Higher Education
University of Liverpool, UK
September 2001 - September 2006
PhD
The School of the Built Environment
University of Nottingham, UK
My research project, titled The Swivel Diaphragm: A geometrical
examination of an alternative retractable ring structure in architecture,
focused on exploring new options for deployable assemblies and their
applications in architecture. The results were published in journal
articles, book chapters and conference proceedings and were awarded
different prizes, including the Hangai Prize.
January 1995 - April 2000
Architect, BA (Hons)
Arts Faculty, National University of Colombia
My degree included modules in architectural design, building
technology, structural systems, urban planning and art history. I
obtained the highest marks in my class and graduated with First Class
Honours. My research thesis was awarded a “summa cum laude”
distinction, the first place at The Otto de Greiff Competition and in the
Best Thesis, 10th Version, 1999-2000.
It was later published in a book titled Arquitectura Metamórfica.
