Presentation covering how the DCC has worked with a researcher in the Centre for Children and Youth at Northampton to help him write a DMP and abstract out advice and guidance for other researchers based on that.
1. DMP support in the Centre for
Children and Youth
John Horton & Sarah Jones
2. Outline
1. Helping John to write a DMP
2. Abstracting out lessons / guidance
3. Options to provide further support
3. John’s DMP
• Data management workshop flagged DMP Online
• Used DMP Online to write draft plan
• Data clinic to get feedback on plan
4. Feedback on DMP Online
• I found the guidance button for each question particularly
valuable - useful in checking that I understood the question and
reassuring me that I was on the right track with my answers.
• At the outset, it would have been useful to have a single list of
all the questions to be answered. I wanted to spend some time
thinking about the questions and discussing them with my co-
investigators before starting the form.
• I found there was a certain amount of repetition... (which can
take you over funders’ page limits)
• In general, I found DMPOnline a very useful and neat tool for
preparing a DMP for a submission to ESRC.
5. Responding to John’s lessons
• Changes planned to DMP Online
– Introducing a summary page to download
– Changing funder template to avoid duplication
• Developing local guidelines to help others
– ESDS guidance on writing plans
– Links to support at Northampton
– Examples from John’s DMP
6. Guidance document covers:
A data management plan should include:
• assessment of existing data
• information on new data
• quality assurance of data
• back-up and security of data
• expected difficulties in data sharing
• copyright/Intellectual Property Right
• responsibilities
• preparation of data for sharing and archiving
8. Where next?
• Adding University of Northampton guidance
and examples to DMP Online?
• Running more courses & data clinics?
• Local support & mentoring in Schools?
• What else do you need?
