Ivan IV, also known as Ivan the Terrible, was Russia's first Czar who ruled from 1533 until his death in 1584. He expanded Russian territory significantly. Ivan was a harsh and violent ruler who had thousands of nobles executed, taking their land and money. He established a personal kingdom separate from the lands ruled by nobles, exhibiting a desire to consolidate power. While Ivan expanded Russia's territory, his brutal actions against nobles and executions earned him his nickname "The Terrible".
Ivan the Terrible ruled Russia from 1547 to 1584. He expanded Russian territory by conquering the Islamic state of Kazan, where he forcibly Christianized civilians and destroyed mosques. However, Ivan became increasingly paranoid and violent. He created the Oprichniki secret police force to eliminate threats, and they brutally tortured and killed thousands. Ivan's mental state deteriorated further, and he was known to publicly execute people in gruesome ways. By the end of his life, Ivan had descended into madness and was feared and hated by the Russian people.
Elizabeth I was born in 1533 and became Queen of England in 1559 after her coronation. She concluded war with France by signing the Treaty of Cateau-Cambresis that same year. In 1577, she agreed to an alliance with the Netherlands to help them fight Spain. Sir Francis Drake was knighted by Elizabeth in 1581 after capturing Spanish treasure. Mary Queen of Scots was executed in 1587 for conspiring against Elizabeth, leading to the defeat of the Spanish Armada in 1588. Elizabeth granted a charter establishing the East India Company in 1600 before her death in 1603.
