This course covers the African American military experience from 1865 to 1940 over 4 thematic periods in 6 weekly 2.5 hour classes. Topics will include the Buffalo Soldiers, the emergence of black officers, the Spanish American and Philippine American Wars, and the service of black soldiers in World War 1. Classes incorporate lectures, discussions, films, slides, interviews and letters to explore the experiences of black soldiers and their families on topics such as duty, segregation, and leisure activities over the eras examined.
The World War One Historical Association Bay Area Chapter will hold a meeting on July 11, 2015 at San Jose State University. Historian Anthony Powell will present on "We Were Americans Too: The African American Officer and Enlisted Man during the Great War". Powell has over 30 years of experience studying and writing about African American soldiers, including Buffalo Soldiers. He will discuss the experiences of African American soldiers during World War 1 and bring rare exhibits. Refreshments will be provided and donations of $5 are suggested. Directions to Sweeney Hall on the SJSU campus are provided. The next chapter meeting on August 8 will feature a presentation on Gertrude Bell and World War 1 in the Middle East.
San José State University's Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library and History Department are presenting an exhibit called "The Price of Liberty" showcasing artifacts from one of the largest private collections of African-American military history owned by Anthony Powell, chronicling Black service since the Civil War. The display will be open in the Cultural Heritage Center of the library from February 1-29, 2012 with an opening ceremony on February 3rd from noon to 1:30pm that is open to the public with refreshments provided.
