2. 1. What is your topic?
• A lady approaching 70 wants to know how to
use her mobile phone.
• Considerations
1. She has low vision and cannot see the text on
screen
2. She is unfamiliar with the Android operating
system.
3. 2. Why did you choose it?
• Endless march of technology but not much
support.
• Seems like a constant refrain- How does this
work?
• Seems like LINC workers offer tech support a lot
of the time.
• Would like the outcome to be a client more
comfortable with using technology, able to use
the phone to communicate with family and
realise that help is available.
4. 3. What retrieval strategies did you
apply?
• Used google search to gather most websites
using terms like “smartphone”, “seniors”,
“how-to” and “I hate my phone”.
• Dumped any websites that were too heavy on
advertising and jargon.
• For any sources of weak authority, I would
corroborate the information and expel any
sites I found lacking.
5. 4. Which of the following tools were
relevant and why?
Print
• Familiar technology.
• Needs no battery.
Non-Print
• How-to websites. Simple
language, very basic, very
friendly.
• RSS Feed. Constant updates
from a similar demographic as
the client.
• YouTube videos.
Demonstrated concepts for
the client. Show and tell.
• Images. Add visual interest
and used to convey a larger
point.
6. 5. Which information agencies or
Internet sites did you use? Why?
• I used the Motorola website as an example of lots
of information but not the right information.
• I used the Android4Seniors RSS feed as it directly
addressed my client’s needs- made by a senior
gent, simple language, Australian context.
• The how-to sites were used to show the basic of
Android and to be used as a backup resource/
print it out for reference.
• I used YouTube to get visual depiction of
launchers in action and introduce choice to the
client. Is it empowering to be able to choose?
7. 6.How did you analyse / sort the
information?
• I analysed the information by source,
authority and corroboration especially for
content such as Begin with Android .
• I arranged the posts to run sequentially by
modified the time settings in Blogger. Why? So
it runs like a narrative rather than jumping all
over the place.
8. 7.Did you need to reassess or follow
up?
• I made constant tweaks.
• I reassessed the language I used when
explaining technology.
• I made sure all aspects of the blog were
linked, so that the blog could function as a
hub.
• I tweaked the timing of the blog posts to run
sequentially down the page.
9. 8.How have you recorded and
managed your information?
• I recorded all my links
on delicious.com, a
social bookmarking
site.
