Delivering Information Superiority to the Armoured Vehicle
FUTURE ARMOURED VEHICLEs SITUATIONAL AWARENESS 2020
Day One | Wednesday 1st April 2020 www.armouredvehicles-sa.com
WELCOME LETTER FROM THE CHAIRMAN
Dear Colleagues,
I take great pleasure in inviting you to the SMi Future Armoured Vehicles
Situational Awareness (FAVSA) Conference to be held 01 – 02 April 2020
in London. This is truly an exciting and evolving worldwide community
of Defence Industry, Academia, Government and Military experts
sharing our problems and discussing potential solution approaches. Our
community is creating awareness of the common military problem of
combat vehicle Situational Awareness (SA) and how we can develop
solutions – you are most welcome to attend.
This year the international panel will include discussion on the developing
open electric architectures and shared data models and examples of
how these are being exploited in new mission systems capabilities and
platform upgrades to solve the problem of SA.
Western Land combat vehicles have traditionally relied on confidence
in technical advantage; a perception that higher levels of technology
would outmatch a numerically superior and technology inferior
adversaries - our “kit” is better than yours.
The last decade however has witnessed Western capabilities again
being matched. The truth is that challengers and open markets have
developed equal and superior capability - we need to take back the
advantage.
Technology development is now commercially driven: accessible and
understood by an ever more intelligent civil world often unconstrained
by defence limitations imposed by system safety and communication
security – if the technology is the same how do we improve?
In recognising it is defence capability, not technology alone that
provides military advantage, we must build combat vehicle capability
around the socio-technical system: the assimilated human -machine
capability and information streams; recognising, understanding and
deciding before the opponent can – the information edge.
The provision of a comprehensive SA capability for combat vehicles
can help return the combat edge. Consideration for how we create
instinctive and intuitive human machine interfaces can enhance
information access speed – our crews will make faster and precise
decisions based on increased and tuned awareness of the combat
environment without being overburdened.
I invite you to join our community in London 01-02 April 2020,

  • 2. FUTURE ARMOURED VEHICLEs SITUATIONAL AWARENESS 2020 Day One | Wednesday 1st April 2020 www.armouredvehicles-sa.com WELCOME LETTER FROM THE CHAIRMAN Dear Colleagues, I take great pleasure in inviting you to the SMi Future Armoured Vehicles Situational Awareness (FAVSA) Conference to be held 01 – 02 April 2020 in London. This is truly an exciting and evolving worldwide community of Defence Industry, Academia, Government and Military experts sharing our problems and discussing potential solution approaches. Our community is creating awareness of the common military problem of combat vehicle Situational Awareness (SA) and how we can develop solutions – you are most welcome to attend. This year the international panel will include discussion on the developing open electric architectures and shared data models and examples of how these are being exploited in new mission systems capabilities and platform upgrades to solve the problem of SA. Western Land combat vehicles have traditionally relied on confidence in technical advantage; a perception that higher levels of technology would outmatch a numerically superior and technology inferior adversaries - our “kit” is better than yours. The last decade however has witnessed Western capabilities again being matched. The truth is that challengers and open markets have developed equal and superior capability - we need to take back the advantage. Technology development is now commercially driven: accessible and understood by an ever more intelligent civil world often unconstrained by defence limitations imposed by system safety and communication security – if the technology is the same how do we improve? In recognising it is defence capability, not technology alone that provides military advantage, we must build combat vehicle capability around the socio-technical system: the assimilated human -machine capability and information streams; recognising, understanding and deciding before the opponent can – the information edge. The provision of a comprehensive SA capability for combat vehicles can help return the combat edge. Consideration for how we create instinctive and intuitive human machine interfaces can enhance information access speed – our crews will make faster and precise decisions based on increased and tuned awareness of the combat environment without being overburdened. I invite you to join our community in London 01-02 April 2020, Mr John Crozier Technical Partner, Urban Canyon Sixth Sense (UC6S), DSTL, UK MoD 08.00 Registration & Coffee 08.50 Chairman’s Opening Remarks Mr John Crozier, Technical Partner, Urban Canyon Sixth Sense (UC6S), DSTL, UK MoD OPENING KEYNOTE ADDRESSES 09.00 Maximising Tactical Awareness through Comprehensive Armoured Crew Training • British training in the discipline of communications and the importance for all round situational awareness • Increasing the rate at which threats are perceived and engaged • Matching the necessities and aptitudes of modern recruits with the latest developments in technology  Colonel Jonathan Brooking, Commander HQ Armour Centre, British Army 09.40 Using Open Systems Architecture to Realise Effective Crew Situational Awareness • Implementing Generic Vehicle Architecture (GVA) as a means of enabling the delivery of operationally effective force elements • UK progress on realising agile and adaptable vehicle integrated mission systems through application of the GVA architecture • Implementing the Land Data Model - “The key to vendor independent, interoperable systems” Mr Keith Smith, GVA Manager, DE&S UK MoD 10.20 Session Reserved for Sponsor 11.00 Morning Coffee UPDATES FROM INDUSTRY: HOST NATION PERSPECTIVES 11.30 Creating a coherent vehicle architecture approach to deliver and exploit the Single information Environment • Managing the rapidly changing character of conflict with reduced funding • Delivering against differing rates of change of technology • Optimising the integration of tactical CIS and electronic architectures across a mixed fleet of vehicles Dr Andy Lillie, Technology Director, Network & Communications, Mission Systems, General Dynamics Land Systems 12.10 Session Reserved for Sponsor 12.50 Thoughts on Future Urban Local Situational Awareness • Inputs from the UK UCSA programme, various actual vehicle LSA fits plus some consideration from UK UC6S programme • Sensor and sensor fusion considerations • Vehicle EA infrastructure considerations Dr Iain Carrie, Systems Design Engineer, Land & Air Systems, Optronics & Missile Electronics, Thales Mr Ian James, Chief Technologist Land Systems, Land & Air Systems, Optronics & Missile Electronics, Thales 13.30 Networking Lunch INDIRECT PROTECTION AND SIGNATURE MANAGEMENT 14.30 WTD 52: Considerations on Signature Awareness • Camouflage Assessment in Real Time (CART) • Application of Camouflage Efficiency Tools in Missions • Implications for situational awareness Mr Thomas Honke, Indirect Protection, Research & Technology WTD 52, Bundeswehr Mr Guenter Fuchs, Indirect Protection Research & Technology WTD 52, Bundeswehr 15.10 Supporting Situational Awareness: Saab Barracuda • Maximizing time to assess and disseminate information • Support to HI-FI surveillance • Get out of there!
