1. Knowledge Building & Critical Thinking
The students were required to think critically about their learning. They were required to apply
their learning and create a final product that synthesized their understanding of the experiences
of immigrants and refugees transitioning to Canada.
We worked hard to ensure that the assessment of this unit of study was balanced and included
evidence of learning that included products, conversations, and observations. The students
helped to design the rubric for the documentary. Therefore they had the assessment tool for
their final product before they began their project. The students had conversations (peer
evaluations) with one another using the “Documentary Peer Assessment Feedback Form.” The
students also had the opportunity to have conversations with themselves by self-reflecting upon
their work using the Voki avatar. As teachers, we were continually observing the interactions
between group members and recording our results in the “Characteristics of Successful Learners
Rubric”.
