2. Introduction
Linked learning refers to an educational
approach, which aims at advancing high
school education.
This approach links academics, technical
education, with various fields such as
engineering, health or others.
Linked learning is beneficial to students,
educators, parents and policymakers.
Importantly, the approach serves to prepare
high school students for college education
and career readiness (Richmond, 2010).
3. Problem Statement
California faces challenges in educational
attainment for its youth.
In California, only 34% of the youth
complete the minimum qualifications to
access college education.
There has been no change in reading for
eighth grades since 1998.
Schools in California receive inadequate
learning resources for quality education
Drop-outs are not prepared for college
success, career and life (Richmond, 2010).
4. Purpose
This presentation provides relevant
information concerning the linked learning
approach.
The purpose is to show that the approach
will prepare students to cope with the
dynamic US, and California economy
This presentation aims to provide an
approach, which will work well in preparing
students for careers, college success, and
overall life (Richmond, 2010).
5. Literature Evidence
Construction Tech Academy CTA, a school
in San Diego executed the linked learning
approach in 2004.
The approach allowed the school to develop
project-based classes called advisories.
The advisory classes main objective was to
instill academics and work skills in real
world applications (Richmond, 2010).
A typical example is one advisory project,
was to construct a theme park, where
students worked in teams, and built a
physical model of the park.
6. (contd.)
Using the approach, the school realized that
students could apply academic and technical
concepts in real life cases.
In addition, students gained capacities to work
together, distribute tasks to match the skills of
different students.
After one year, the teams presented ideas to
experts and got feedback, which helped in
preparing them for future careers.
Most importantly, the linked learning
approach transformed results from the school
with much success (Richmond, 2010).
7. (contd.)(contd.)
In addition, students from the school were
able to enroll for post-secondary training,
including college, and military.
Integrating academic content with
practical skills, and workplace exposure
are the core concepts of linked learning,
which have given students the nest
education (Richmond, 2010).
8. Importance of the Approach
Applied learning: the approach provides
applied concepts, which can improve success
for English learning.
Academic-technical integration; the model
provides for integration, where students can
apply classroom concepts in practice
Engagement and real-world context;
coursework provided by the model motivates
students to their future careers. In addition,
studies suggest that the approach can
eliminate habits of dropping out of school
(Richmond, 2010).
9. Challenges to implement the Linked
Learning Approach
Human Capital; schools may face
difficulties when hiring, training the staff;
hence it is hard to create a capable staff.
System and policy alignment; the schools
are likely to face challenges owing to the
separate funding from the state and federal
policies.
Funding; the approach will cost money for
training, district support and costs associated
with the approach can be hard to manage
during economic crisis (Richmond, 2010).
10. Recommendations
The Linked Learning approach is strategic
preparation tool, which other states should
integrate into their education system.
Policy-makers should support the approach
and allocate appropriate funding (Richmond,
2010).
The different education stakeholders,
including the government should support the
integration of the approach in schools
The Linked Learning approach will help in
eliminating the educational crisis in
California.
11. Federal Implications
The schools aiming to implement Linked
Learning approach must comply with the No
Child Left Behind Act.
Linked Learning approach will be influenced
by the Higher Education Act.
Most importantly, the federal policy must be
reformed to accommodate innovations that
seek to improve education outcomes.
In addition, federal policy should support the
approach as it shows success in college, life
for every student (Richmond, 2010).
12. Conclusion
The Linked Learning Approach has shown
great success in integrating academic
concepts and technical concepts.
The approach will work well to transform the
educational system in California.
Although the approach will have substantial
implications on the current federal policies, it
has shown to provide positive results.
The federal laws should accommodate such
approaches that aim at improving the
education status.

Editor's Notes
Linked learning originates from what was popularly known as “multiple pathways” in California. This is because it engaged other disciplinary fields integrated in the high school education system. Nevertheless, the approach is beneficial to students, educators, parents and policymakers. In addition, some areas of the United States have employed this approach; meaning that schools are having further objectives, rather than educate the students. The approach serves as a preparation tool for high school students to merge in colleges and prepare them for future careers.
California faces challenges in its education system whereby high school students do not attain the required educational attainment. In the state, only 34% of high school students complete the minimum required achievements to access college education. Most importantly, the situation dates back to the year 1998, when only 21% of students showed proficiency in reading. Another contributor to the educational challenges in California is the under preparedness of teachers. Owing to this, white students show eligibility for college education. On the other hand, students who drop-out from school face earning $10,000 and less because they lack preparedness for college, career and overall life.
Owing to the educational crisis faced in the Californian state, this presentation will provide substantial relevant information, mainly on the success of the linked learning approach, in an attempt to provide an alternative approach, which will help eliminate the educational crisis. In addition, the provided article shows that students who dropout, face individual costs challenges, where they earn $10,000 or less. Therefore, this presentation will aim to provide relevant information that it can help students cope with the dynamic economy of California. Nevertheless, the presentation will aim to provide the linked learning approach as a preparation tool for high school students, for college success and comfortable living.
Literature suggests that the California Linked Learning approach is a tool, which will work well to transform the educational crisis faced in any other school in the United States. This is because the approach integrates academic, technical concepts in real world experience to provide an educational system, which prepares students for college education and life. Most importantly, one school in San Diego, Construction Tech Academy, implemented the program, and showed promising results. Students had gained the capacity to collaborate, select a leader, and work practically to develop practical things. For instance, the students worked on a project to build a theme park, which they did appropriately. In addition, most students after the education could join post-secondary education, including colleges and military training.
The Linked Learning approach transformed the school because the school leaders realized that after implementing the program, students were able to apply academic concepts, which integrated with technical concepts, they were able to develop practical skills. Furthermore, after only one year, the Linked Learning approach had transformed the students for the better. In addition, the students could present ideas to professionals, in the field of their future choice careers, and the feedback they got from the professionals prepared them for future careers.
After implementing the approach, Construction Tech Academy students were now able to enroll for post-secondary training, which consists of a variety of learning courses in the military or colleges, or any other institution that offered post-secondary education. Therefore, we see the Linked Learning approach delivering or achieving the postulated benefits to students. Improving student’s performance by integrating academic concetnt with practical skills, and workplace exposure.
Evidence from literature suggests that the Linked Learning approach is the best way to engage students and prepare them for future careers, or prepare them for college life, and success in life. The core concept core in the approach is the integration classroom concepts in real life cases. The CTA school students were able to develop a business plan, and finally build a physical model of the theme park. Some of the provisions of the model include applied learning, academic-technical integration and engagement, and real-world context. Most importantly, research suggests that the approach could help in improving the level of English, and could even minimize the cases of dropping out from school.
The Linked Learning approach has the capacity to meet the high school needs in this 21st century. Nevertheless, there are several significant challenges, which can hinder the implementation of the approach. For instance, schools may find it difficult to train or hire a staff, which will work exclusively to sustain the Linked Learning approach. In addition, academic and technical teachers have different qualifications, hence they are widely isolated an aspect that will provide difficulties when training such a staff. In addition, the approach will incur considerable costs for training, and many other costs associated with the approach, which schools can find it difficult to manage during economic crisis.
Owing to the benefits and the positive results, which the Linked Learning approach brings, it is apparent that many states will implement the approach to boost their performance. Therefore, policymakers should support the approach and lobby for the funding of the approach by the state or the US government. Most importantly, various stakeholders associated with education should support the approach.
The Linked Learning approach seeks to incorporate academic concepts with technical concepts, aligned to college success and preparation for future careers. Owing to this, it is apparent that various federal laws, and policies will influence the programs, or the program might influence some policies to enable accommodation. Most importantly, the schools that aim to implement the approach will need to comply with the No Child Left Behind Act, and the Higher Education Act. In addition, federal policymakers should address the current structures for schools aiming to implement the approach. However, the federal laws should accommodate such approaches that aim at improving the education system.
The Linked Learning approach is a typical example of innovations, which have a positive influence on the education system. The Construction Tech Academy implemented the approach, and the school realized substantial positive results because students gained the capabilities to utilize academic concepts in real life situations. Most importantly, the implementation of the approach has several barriers, and funding is the most significant challenge. However, funding by the government will enhance the implementation process a success. Nevertheless, it is apparent that the approach will have substantial implications on the federal law and policies. Therefore, owing to the benefits of the approach, policymakers should support its integration into the current education system.
