2. Anything can be described by its physical
properties and its geographic location.
The main geo-location data sources are:
surveying data
aerial & satellite images, laser-scanning
Resulting in
digital data and hardcopy maps
navigation systems, Google Earth, Bing Maps, etc. for consumers
Digital GIS data is the main source for
infrastructure planning and management in any
developed country.
The improvement in quality and availability of
geospatial data is a key element to the
development of emerging nations. Geospatial Conference Tunisia (GCT 2013) Slide 2
3. The Current Situation:
Historically, geospatial data was “secret”, before
Google Earth and Bing Maps made it available
to everybody with a connection to the internet.
Mostly ‘data islands’ exist at government
agencies, generally without networking or
sharing data.
Existing data often exists on paper only, is
outdated and/or incomplete.
The combination of Geographic Sciences with
Information Technology is not established in
schools and University education
Geospatial data is necessary for all
infrastructure planning, but also to provide
basic services to the public, such as car
navigation data. Geospatial Conference Tunisia (GCT 2013) Slide 3
4. The Result:
The geospatial private sector is underdeveloped,
thousands of qualified jobs are missing from the
economy.
The public and administration is not aware of the
fundamental importance of geospatial data.
The general infrastructure can only be improved, if
modern, geospatial management tools are used for
new planning, construction and maintenance.
5. 3G is a joint venture between a core team of international
and local partners. We think globally and act locally to
serve our clients with an international best-practice
approach, providing knowledge in all areas of geospatial
engineering.
Our group structure is flexible enough to serve both large
government clients and small private industry. Together
with our clients, we determine the best consulting and
services approach and maximize their benefits from
geospatial technology and projects.
Above all, our focus as consultants is on best-practice,
quality, honesty and vendor independency in the solutions
which we recommend and help to implement.

6. For commercial operations, 3G and our partners have clients
in Algeria, Tunisia and Libya, such as government authorities,
private companies and the oil industry.
3G offers commercial consulting, training, project
specifications and data services for:
– Satellite Images
– Digital Photo flights & LIDAR Terrain Mapping
– 3D City Modeling
– DGPS Ground Surveying
– DTM and Orthophoto Production, GIS Data Capture

9. The German GeoConsultants Group organizes the GCT
conference series in Tunis to assist in the development of the
geospatial industry and market in the in the North African region
and beyond. We are aiming to bring international companies,
their experience and technical know-how to the region with the
annual GCT conferences.
North Africa stands to benefit from geospatial data and services
in many ways, especially through much improved infrastructure
planning, management and maintenance processes, the
resulting cost savings, improved services to its citizens and the
large number of direct and related jobs created through this key
geospatial data and services industry (return to previous slide)

11. The AGSI initiative has the objective to build local geospatial capacity, both in
terms of practical, technical skills and for the management of geospatial projects
in North Africa. With the support of the Tunisian Ministry of IT and
Telecommunications Technology and a broad-based alliance of international,
geospatial companies, European and regional universities and international
geospatial organizations, the AGSI operations will commence in mid-2013 with the
planned opening of the first AGSI training center in Tunis.
At this time (October 2012), the AGSI is supported institutionally by the
International Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ISPRS) and the
International Cartographic Association (ICA). At the InterGeo congress in
Hannover, the AGSI was officially started as a non-profit society and organization
on October 11, 2012.
As an 'inclusive', non-partisan & non-profit organization, the AGSI is focused at
building geospatial capacity and will be instrumental to create professional,
geospatial employment in North Africa.
