New on-demand Webinar

We used to just worry about the unlikely natural disaster and the odd communications breakdown when planning for backup and recovery. But these days, an entirely new breed of threats have emerged that promise to knock out your business applications and data the first chance they get. From cyber crime, to cyberterrorism and mobile and cloud computing complexities, handling these new threats with the same old tools simply isn’t possible. This was the topic that drove a recent Softchoice webinar, centered on how your business can more effectively, simply and securely provide a robust DR and BC strategy leveraging a suite of Azure based technologies from Microsoft.

Notes de l'éditeur

  • -In this world of digital transformation – every business is a digital business and the importance of technology as a driver for business value has never been greater and it goes along with this that when an outage occurs the impact has also never been greater.
-There are the direct costs often measured in lost sales during the time period of the outage. Certainly last year wasn’t great for the aviation industry and many of us experienced this challenge directly. While aviation is highly visible it certainly wasn’t the only industry affected. Another example recently was the githab outage which was caused by human error – an admin executed rm –rf which deletes all your files – and as such is the finest Linux compression known with no available decompression command.
-Beyond the direct costs are the indirect costs such as the impact to your overall brand which can be both greater and further reaching.
-In IT we sign up for the charter of keeping the lights on and unfortunately its our roles that often bear the brunt of these challenges when things go wrong so we need to be plan-ful to ensure they don’t.
  • So given how important this work is what are the key challenges. Well it comes down to the four C – with the first two cost and complexity, directly challenging the second two coverage and compliance. The cost of solutions such as DR can be prohibitive with the need for a second site, more people, more hardware and fast networking. Complexity plays a role beyond multiple data centers as some processes are complex such as restoring tape backups and you even need to manage, patch, and upgrade the business continuity programs.
The result is that often few applications are covered with DR and not every application is backed up which challenges your ability to be compliant.
  • Azure can help by reducing the challenges of cost and complexity, while helping add coverage and compliance. Let’s drill into more details.

Microsoft Azure provides customers peace of mind knowing their workloads are protected from any disaster without having to build and maintain a secondary datacenter or relying on backup. Azure delivers cloud services that extend to your datacenter to protect your infrastructure, transforming your business with a true hybrid solution.

    Reducing costs
Customers do not have to pay for infrastructure, the power to run and cool machines, or IT personnel to manage machines, saving customers from paying to maintain a secondary data center
    Managing complexity
Customers can leverage automation to enable the true power of recovery plans and allow you to failover your workloads with a click of a button, removing the guest work and stress involved in a disaster
    Ensuring compliance
Disaster recovery is no longer constrained by geographical barriers. The disaster recovery site can be from any one of our Azure regions around the world. (Or asking for something like the quick restoration of workloads allows customers to gather necessary information to meet compliance deadlines)
    Scaling protection
ASR provides rich capabilities to quickly replicate virtual and physical machines a customer’s own secondary on-premises site or Azure
  • -With Azure there is no need to purchase additional hardware, or sites – you simply pay for what you use.
  • -There is likewise no long procurement cycles or construction cycles you simply turn on services so you’ll get going faster than before
-And because Azure delivers business continuity as a service there is no need to patch, manage or upgrade the business continuity software – we take care of that.
  • -Which means you can be more compliance with your needs.
-And you can rest assured that Azure has the biggest compliance portfolio in the industry and has you covered there too.
  • Now let’s make sure we are using the same terminology for the various parts of a business continuity strategy.

    HA is
    DR is
    Backup is

I’m going to focus on Backup and DR.
  • -Let’s look at just a few stories from our customers using these services.

    For backup:
    -PCL is a construction company
-180 jobsites; actually using an existing cloud based backup approach to back-up files so they were ahead of many customers already however:
-Expensive; Long time to recover (4 days)
-Moved to Azure backup and reduced recovery time reduced to hours and the cloud economics significantly reduced their price points
-Expanded to a broader set of backup use cases including VMs.
  • Pantaenius is one of the leading yacht insurance providers in Europe and has built its business on prompt, personalized service any time of the day or night. Pantaenius relies heavily on their IT systems to meet their customers’ expectations of 24/7 service. The yachting community is very small, so news travels fast. If an outage happened, people would know very quickly and future business with customers would be jeopardized.
Pantaenuis’ previous disaster recovery strategy was backing up its data each night to disk and then to tape and stored offsite. However, Pantaenius realized that recovering from tape was too slow—it would take hours for a single server restore and day for multiple servers and who knows how long if their entire datacenter went down.
Azure Site Recovery interested Pantaenius because their data would be always available and accessible in Azure with boundless scalability. If Pantaenius loses a single server or its entire datacenter, it can activate Azure servers in minutes so that employees can continue working, either from home or another location. With Azure Site Recovery, Pantaenius has a recovery point objective of five minutes, compared with the loss of days’ worth of data before. They can also test its disaster recovery plan at any time without affecting production workloads, which was difficult to do before.
On top of having an accessible and reliable disaster recovery plan, leveraging Azure also allowed them to save $160,000 because they did not have to build an off-site disaster recovery location. Plus, because their staff no longer handles tapes daily, coordinates with the external storage company, and pays for tape equipment maintenance, they save an additional $33,000-$45,000 annually.
Pantaenius’ has peace of mind knowing that they will be able to deliver personalized service around the clock because they have a disaster recovery plan running in Azure to ensure business continuity.
  • -Now let’s look at it in action.
  • Speaker Notes:

We understand that everyone has their favorite partners and tools.

In addition to one of the most comprehensive catalogues of natively-integrated functions of any hyper-scale cloud provider, Microsoft Azure has the largest partner/3rd party solution ecosystem available.

Whether you need cloud migration tools, security tools, WAN optimization, automation tools, or something even more specialized/niche, Azure’s extensive network of support has you covered.
