Moorthy ,who is a strong followers of Gandhi.he is the central character,a young educated man, comes from the city with the message of the Mahatma. He goes from door to door,even the to the pariah quarter of the village and explains to the villagers the significance of Gandhi's struggle for freedom.
The outstanding personality of the village so far as this narration is concerned is Moorthy the staunch followers of Gandhi. He is spiritual guide ,friend and philosopher of the people of Kanthapura.

  3. 3.  Raja rao’s novel Kanthapura is the most powerful of the portraying the impact of the Gandhian Movement on the Indian people.  Gandhi’s civil movement comes to this remote scheduled village.
  4. 4. Moorthy ,the central character, a young educated man , comes from the city with the message of mahatma. Moorthy goes from door to door, even the to the pariah quarter of the villagers the significance of the gandhiji’s struggle for freedom.
  5. 5. Moorthy is progressive enough to go to pariah quarters, eat with them and talk with the pariah. But, after every interaction with the pariahs, when we wants to enter rangamma’s house he asks her whether he could get into her house as he has come out of pariah hut. Rangamma asks him to purify himself with ganga water and then enter. Moorthy meekly follows her instructions and olnly after purifying with his sacred thread with ganga water , Then he enter in house.
  6. 6.  At this narrative juncture, the narrator of the novel innocuously remarks “ after all, a brahmin is a Brahmin, sister! ” ( P-105) This incident portraits here the dormant cast consciousness that is inherent in people such as moorthy.
  7. 7. Moorthy, who is until then a strong follower of Gandhi , to respose his faith in gandhian ideologies. He loses strength to continue living under gandhismand face and brutal music of the British government.

There women have reached a stage where they require such as moorthy to reachGandhi .
