- Howard Gardner spent many years researching intelligence, then “he proposed a new theory and definition of intelligence in his 1983 book entitled Frames of Mind: The Theory of Multiple Intelligences (Gilman, M.S., 2007).” Howard Gardner began studying intelligence using many different means, such as “psychology, biology, neurology, sociology, anthropology, and the arts and humanities (Gilman, M.S., 2007).” After the release of Howard Gardner’s work with “The Theory of Multiple Intelligences”, Gardner and many others have continued to study and research this discovery by Howard Gardner and now using this in many areas of development, teaching, and assessment , just to name a few among many more areas of intelligence.
- Linguistic; this would be one that is good with languages, and includes writers, lawyers, philosophers, politicians and teachers.Logical; this would include someone good at math and also scientists, mathematicians, engineers, doctors and economists. Spatial; this intelligence would include artists, engineers, and architects.Bodily-Kinesthetic; this intelligence would be one that is good with movements such as dancers, athletes, builders, and actors to name a few.Interpersonal; would be people that are good with other people, such as politicians, managers, teachers, and social workers. Musical; would be one that is good with music, such as musicians, singers, conductors, and composers. Intrapersonal; This would be people that are good at knowing oneself, and also people that are good at philosophers, psychologists, theologians, writers and scientists. - The theory of multiple intelligences is used many ways, one way is in schools, and is attracting the attention of many educators and “hundreds of schools are now using its philosophy to redesign the way it educates children(Armstrong, 2010).” By using Dr. Gardner’s theory of multiple intelligences people can be educated better in the area of multiple intelligence that they show the most intelligence in such as one that is excellent in the math area or one that shows higher intelligence in music areas, this would make for far happier and content people doing things that attract them and that they score high in. “Unfortunately, many children who have these gifts do not receive much reinforcement for them in school. Many of these kids, in fact, end up being labeled "learning disabled (Armstrong, 2010).” The theory of multiple intelligences can be used from the child right up into adulthood, making for a far more content society with each having a useful place.
- The influence of the theory of multiple intelligences on society could end up being a large one. Instead of children and individual being ignored for their interests in certain things, such as art, math, and so many other interests that this individual show interests in from childhood to adulthood, these interests could be looked at more closely and allowed to develop within the individual, possibly leading to a better educated person, that feels far more rewarded inside themselves, and this alone could create a large different in society as a whole.The “traditional concept of measuring intelligence by I.Q testing is far too restricted (Multiple intelligence theory, n.d.),” but if the eight primary intelligences were looked at, and a individual exceeded in a few or just one then this could be looked at in measuring intelligence. “Equally the same rule applies to a child prodigy or mentally/physically disadvantaged person (Multiple intelligence theory, n.d.).” For example if an individual has suffered some kind of possible brain injury, and is suffering, say “use of languages” but shows art or music talents, then this could be explored for this individual. Using The theory of multiple intelligences with individuals, could create a whole new outlook and ways to teach for society as a whole.
- The overall view of intelligence is being changed by The Theory of Multiple intelligence, this theory has many looking at different views of intelligence and how it is measured. “All know that some persons learn slowly, others quickly, and that mental superiority is a desirable trait; "intelligence," however, (like anumber of abstract terms) resists clear definition (Frost, 2007).”It is now being accepted that general intelligence cannot be measured and the old way of attempting to measure intelligence cannot be done, that individual are each different with no two alike, and this included special needs individuals, that at least one or more of the eight multiple intelligences is present in the individual, and outside things such as learning disabilities, brain disorders or injuries does not eliminate certain multiple intelligences. Multiple intelligences can still be explored for an individual which is changing the overall view of intelligence.
- Individual with intrapersonal intelligence are excellent at looking inward at themselves, “figuring out their own feelings, motivations and goals (Personality Max, 2011).” Their best way in learning anything is alone where they can think and reflect, looking at many different things at their own speed. “They are introspective and seek understanding. They are intuitive and typically introverted (Personality Max, 2011).” The intrapersonal intelligence Individual could possibly be good at being a Psychologist, Philosopher, and Theologian
- Intrapersonal Intelligence affects my life in many ways, I am always looking inward at myself to better understand experiences and how these affect my life, be them good or bad experiences. If the experience was a bad one, then I spend time thinking about how I could have changed that to be a god experience, growing from the bad, so the next time I may be in something similar, I will better know how to handle it. I have a lot of curiously about life, and how to make it a better one for myself and others. I love helping other; especially spiritually and emotionally to find what it is that they really want to have a better life. I have very strong values and beliefs and not afraid to voice them. When I think of goals, I do not set a special time for the future to achieve them; I try each day to grow in that direction of the goal I seek in life, such as attending higher education. I am a person that enjoys being alone at times, I seem to learn better and grasp what it is I am trying to do rather than people being around me, which seems to interfere with what it is I am doing or learning.
- An individual that has Naturalist Intelligence is one that “recognition, appreciation, and understands the natural world around them (brainboxx., n.d.),” they have the ability to know different flowers and things of nature in their own world that surrounds them and the ability to look outward taking into their mind many things of nature. Such as a ride through the countryside may attract this individual to what is there. They are fascinated by most things of nature, such as butterflies, birds, and plants of different kinds. This individual could sit for a long time to just watch a bird or butterfly and how they act in nature.
- Naturalist Intelligence affects my own life very strongly, as I have a deep love for all things of nature and spend a lot of time watching them in their natural habitués. I have a beautiful pine tree that overlook my porch and have it filled with bird feeders and a hummingbird feeder. I also plant flowers and plants that attract butterflies and other species of creatures. I spend many wonderful hours in relaxation watching each. I am also very interested in nature as in forests and trees, now living in a area that is filled with this. I also like to fish and am very interested in shows on anything to do with nature. This love of mine has brought me many hours of peace and happiness.
- Spatial intelligence is someone that “Someone with this ability can look at an empty space and picture how a structure would look inside it (Squidoo, n.d.).” This person can possibly paint or draw and can do very well at some games such as chess, as they have the ability to “scan the board and try to see what future moves would be advantageous, they are excellent with online brain games also (Squidoo, n.d.).” They are also very good working with pictures and video or movie creating. They can also be good at designing, putting thoughts on paper, so would also be good at writing.
- Spatial Intelligence affects my life in many ways as I create many videos that I have posted on YouTube. I also find I have a talent for most online brain games and play them as a form of relaxation often. I love pictures and take many, keeping a journal of pictures of my family. This is a part of me that I am very happy with having.
- In conclusion, after looking at all the different things that are part of “Gardner’s Theory of Multiple Intelligences” it is not difficult to understand how each part can affect an individual and us. We do not have to have all eight multiple intelligences, just one part can make us a genus in our own special part. After taking a look at each of the eight parts, we can feel good with where our intelligences lays, and realizing this can than realize just how important it is that Gardner’s Theory of Multiple Intelligences be used in all schools, and anywhere that a special needs or a individual with brain injuries, as each person may have the ability to learn something according to research from the Theory of Multiple Intelligences.
