Abstract: The study examines the relationship of the discipline of Geography with conceptual terms of Environment and society. Geography is seen as a spatial science, majorly concerned with spatial analysis, of how and why things differ from place to place and how observable spatial pattern evolved through time on the surface of the earth. The study adopts a survey of literature as its methodology. It is observable that every society has its individual physical and cultural attributes that distinguishing it from other societies; thus giving it unique character, potential and location. And it is found that in society cultural traits are more pronounced in changing the natural phenomena of the environment. The Environment is better understood when broken to its component: atmosphere, hydrosphere lithosphere and biosphere. Environment has all that is needed to sustain the society and all that is required for life sustenance. It provides the setting with which human action occurs, its shapes but not dictate, how people live in the society as well as their resource base. However, how resources are perceived and utilized is culturally conditioned in society. And virtually every human activity leaves its imprint on the environment. Environment and society form the laboratory for geographic operation. And its spheres form the space which is the major concern in geography and the concept of society introduces the important factor of culture which greatly has direct impact on the environment. The socio-cultural content of the society is influenced by the environment where it locates and the society modifies the content of the environment. There are interconnection between the environment and society which purposely produces spatial patterns with their hidden mechanism of spatial process, accessibility and connectively in addition to idea of location and distance. Advance level of interaction has produced globalization which has accelerated greater spatial diffusion of idea and material resources in the world. The major role of geography is to ensure harmonious spatial organization and inter relationship between and among societies on one hand and between society and its environment on the other. Thus, this is being pursued in geography through its traditions: Earth science, cultural-environment, the location (space), the areal analysis and various paradigms and spatial techniques. It is therefore recommended that for speedy development in developing nations particularly at combating the myriad of environmental challenges and appropriate exploitation and utilization of environmental resources, the spatial tool should be adopted as contained in the discipline of Geography.

Current research is focused on analysis of the urban dynamics in Taipei urban landscapes, Taiwan. It describes recent trends and directions in the urban city sprawl, urban growth and city sprawl affects ecosystems. Consequences of human impacts include various factors among others: landscape degradation, changes in land cover and land use types, decrease in biodiversity richness within the city, deforestation, urbanization, and wetlands destruction, decrease in species, losses of rare and extinct species. The research discussed land cover/use problem in the rapidly development city. Because of the concentrated population density and environmental pressure within the limited geographic space and resources, the city of Taipei deals with specific urban environmental problems.

This is the final session in the Urban Archaeology lifelong learning module. This session looked at different forms of writing for archaeology. Including blogging or maintaining wikis with the Council of British Archaeology for community-based fieldwork projects, and publishing archaeological reports. The session also covered ideas for where to go next, including information on where to volunteer in archaeology, and where to find jobs in the sector.

This was submitted on October 5th 2009 to the Joint Agency Review Team reviewing the Mount Nemo Quarry. I also provided the experts minutes from OMB case PL071044 to illustrate how a certain firm signed off on the fact their own data was insufficient. I have been monitoring the practices of this agency over years in different locations and have found consistencies in testing methods that result in undermined hydrogeological risks.

Strategic Participatory Planning inArchaeological Management in Greece:The Philippi Management Plan forNomination to UNESCO’s WorldHeritage List Anastasia Sakellariadi Institute of Archaeology, UCL, UK This paper examines appropriate conditions for effective strategicparticipatory planning in archaeological heritage management. It is suggestedthat heritage literature often considers the tangible outcome of strategicparticipatory planning, the management plan, as an end of the planningprocess in itself. Drawing from experience in drafting a management plan forthe archaeological site of Philippi in Greece, conventional archaeologicalmanagement in the country is discussed followed by the identification ofconstraints on and benefits from strategic participatory planning. This paperargues that more critical approaches to the actual planning process arenecessary for strategic participatory planning to continuously improve as anapproach in Greece and elsewhere.KEYWORDS strategic participatory planning, management plans, Greekarchaeology, Philippi, sustainable protection and conservation Introduction Strategic participatory planning has been acknowledged for the last thirtyyears in archaeological management as the most effective model forsustainable protection. The use of both qualifiers in the term ‘strategicparticipatory planning’ emphasizes that the method’s strength is thecombination of an inclusive approach to the development of a managementpolicy, and that one does not infer the other. In spite of extensive literature onthe subject (see The Getty Conservation Institute publications and back issuesof the Conservation and Management of Archaeological Sites journal), focus has been placed on case studies of project outcomes, that is, management plans. This paper will argue that more critical insights to the context of the planningprocess itself are necessary in order to further develop and improve it,through the presentation and development of the Philippi Management Plan — regarding an archaeological site in north-eastern Greece. Analysis is basedon the author’s experience as project manager and main editor of theaforementioned management plan. ‘Strategic planning is the process by which an organization effectively adaptsto its environment’ (Hall and McArthur, 1998: 22). In archaeologicalmanagement, this includes: description and recording of the site ormonument at stake, identification of potential stakeholders, assessment andanalysis of values and significance ascribed to it, identification anddescription of the management context, definition of aims for protection andconservation according to existing issues, and policies and objectives settingthrough which these issues will be addressed, as documented in amanagement plan (Sullivan, 1997; Demas, 2002). The whole range of valuesheritage may be assigned should ideally guide the planning process from thestart (see th.

Land use is associated with human rights issue. Resource developers must respect the rights of host communities affected including farmers and indigenous peoples. They should obtain permission not only from landowners but also from occupiers or users before commencing development and be aware of the obligation to protect sources of food and water. In consultation with the community, both government and project proponents must engage a process to compensate fairly for adverse effects, identify strategies to manage environmental and social consequences, and if possible, avoid displacement or resettlement of people. Land and natural resource issues often times are the main causes of conflict. Land conflicts especially when related to access to land or insecurity of tenure commonly become violent when linked to wider processes of political exclusion, social discrimination, economic marginalization, and a perception that peaceful action is no longer a viable strategy for change. The globalization of economies has generated a surge in investments related to land and other natural resources.

The recently published educational policy document under the title ‘National Education Policy Reform’ (NEPF for short) has been the subject of much criticism. Various parties have expressed their grave concerns about this proposed NEPF on many platforms. This document attempts to cover some angles which the author deems less covered in other criticisms. This critique is by no means complete or exhaustive; rather, the author prefers that it be read in conjunction with other such criticisms.
