1. Power point presentation
on 15 days vocational training
at Durgapur Steel Plant
PRESENTED BY: SOURAV GOSWAMI, SOUVIK DAS BISWAS

DEPT: ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING
2. COMPANY DETAILS AND PRODUCTS
In 1978, SAIL became an operating company.
Indian Iron & Steel Company (“IISCO”) in 1979, merged with SAIL in Feb 2006.
Product of SAIL is mainly Steel.
Steel is an alloy of iron and about 2% or less carbon and usually other elements used as a
structural and fabricating material.
TMT Bars: - Applications in construction and fabrication building.

4. RAW MATERIAL HANDLING PLANT
The Raw Materials Handling Plant prepares blend mix for Sinter Plant and also
supplies raw material lumps to Blast Furnaces and Steel Melting Shop.
There are three wagons tipplers to unload the raw materials brought in rakes
of wagons from various mines.
R.M.H.P mainly concerned with receiving, loading, storing and processing of
all the raw materials viz. Iron ore lumps and fines, limestones and dolomites.

5. SINTER PLANT
Sintering is the process of agglomerating iron ore fines (dust) with other fine
materials at high temperature to create a product that can be used in a blast
Furnace.
It causes the constituent materials to fuse to make a single porous mass.

6. BLAST FURNACE
Blast Furnace is the main department in
any steel plant
Furnace No. Name Useful Volume
Capacity Blast Temperature
1. Kasturba 1323 cu m. 1250 T/Day
11000C
2. Kamala 1400 cu m. 1870 T/Day
11000C
3. Sharada 1400 cu m. 1820 T/Day
11000C
4. Durga 1800 cu m. 2340 T/Day 12000C
The main function of Blast Furnace in
steel industry is to produce pig iron for
steel making by smelting iron ore of
different grades with coke, flux and a
blast of air.
7. STEEL MELTING SHOPS/
BASIC OXYGEN FURNACE (BOF)
BOF is the core of a steel plant and the tonnage capacity of any steel plant is
normally designated by the tonnage capacity of its BOF or SMS.
Oxygen is passed through the molten pig iron and thus steel is produced, as
there is reduction in carbon percentage
The composition of the molten metal of the BOF is as follows:
Carbon: 4.1-4.3%,
Phosphorous: 0.1-0.25%,
Silicon: 0.65-0.85%,
Manganese: 0.7-0.8%,
Sulphur: 0.03-0.04%
8. CONTINUOUS CASTING SHOP
One of the critical features in the
modernization of DSP is to produce
billets by continuous casting
Tundish, mold and water spray are
arranged such that molten stream is
poured from tundish to mold and
solidified strand (billet/bloom/
billet) is produced continuously.
The required length of the strand is
cut by torch cutter.
There are two machines with six
strands each capable of producing
billets of sizes varying from 80 mm2
to 150 mm2 .
9. WHEEL & AXLE PLANT
Wheel and axle plant is a special feature of
Durgapur steel plant
The main customer of the wheel sets are the
Indian railways
Wheel capacity -42,000 t.p.a.
Axle capacity -16,000 t.p.a.
The wheel & Axle plant has the following stages
/ equipment's :
1. Rough Shaping of Wheel & Axle
2. Heat Treatment
3. Testing
4. Maching
Wheel & Axle
10. Conclusion
The opportunity of getting vocational training at such a famous and
prestige organization is an opportunity of lifetime.
The training at DURGAPUR STEEL PLANT was very helpful.
It has improved my theoretical concepts
