The US is over 100% capacity when it comes to prison
overcrowding, with over 2.4 million people locked up.
Overcrowding is a ﬁscal and humanitarian issue. Next
year the Justice Department is set to release about
6,000 inmates [early] from prison in an effort to reduce
overcrowding. Expect in 2016 debate around safety and
ways to address an expected surge of homelessness
and ex-con re-skilling and assimilation.
