Each fly has two copies of genes, one from each parent. A gene for red eye color is dominant over white. Flies with one red and one white gene will have orange eyes. If two orange-eyed flies mate, their children will each have a 50% chance of inheriting two copies of the red or white gene, and a 50% chance of inheriting one of each, also resulting in orange eyes.
