SUBRAMANIAPURAM<br />Group No:3<br />This presentation is made by a group of I Year MSW students of Madurai Institute of Social Sciences, Madurai,who visited a slum for the first time as a part of their field work observation visit. <br />The final version will be uploaded after making the class presentation and incorporating all the suggestions made by the supervisor <br />
INTRODUCTION<br />We went on a visit to Subramaniapuram for seeing the life in slum.<br />We observed the life style of people over there.<br />Their conditions was also observed by us.<br />The people belonging to the same community live over there.<br />Their main occupations are scavenging and cobbling. <br />

HISTORY <br />We met a very old man named Solaimuthu ,he stated that he is living there for more than 35 years.<br />More than 575 families are living in this slum area.<br />More than two or three families share a house.<br />

Facilities available in Subramaniapuram<br />A Community Hall constructed to facilitate the social gathering .<br />Two balwadis inside the slum are available for the nutritional betterment of children.<br />A primary and a higher secondary school within the vicinity <br />A Government health center for TB patients living at that area.<br />
Population:<br /> The total population of Subramaniapuram is around 6000 and in that 2000 people living in the slum.<br /> There are two slum areas and the charts below shows the population of the slums.<br />Population of Harijan Colony<br />Area I<br />
Problems<br />Unclean and congested streets.<br />Open drainage running all over the streets of Subramaniapuram.<br />Only two water supply for the whole area.<br />More than 30 houses do not have power supply.<br />Land owning certificate is not provided for many houses ,but they have receipt.<br />

There is a NGO in Subramaniapuram named RAGAVENDRA TRUST which is running for the development and to help the people of the slum.<br />Social workers play a major role in developing the huts into houses.<br />Role of social workers in the slum:<br />
HOSPITALITY<br />We trainees were welcomed with smile by the area people.<br />They treated us as their family members.<br />They gave beverage's for our refreshment.<br />Knowing that students from social sciences college came for slum visit, mayor and other ward members came to support us.<br />The children belonging to the slum gathered together and guided us , played and giggled.<br />
