Moment of truth
Those working in finance organizations are already facing a seismic shift with increasing pressure to stretch, evolve, and develop
new complementary skills to deliver value in a new, more competitive business environment. In fact there is enormous gap
between thought and action, strategy and implementation, all of which requires finance organizations to seek out external
mentoring and knowledge sharing collaborators for organizations to create a framework for sustainable continuous improvement
of team members’ productivity and in facilitating their career development. For accomplishing this finance organizations do need
self-motivated professionals, and an engaged team that continuously strives to improve their performance by embracing broader
spectrum of traits like leadership, efficiency, patience and tolerance, confidence, assuming bigger challenges, effective
communication alongside their functional competencies to survive, thrive and grow in the globalized world of modern business.
Sharing experiences
Through sharing of experiences the mentor provides valuable feedback, insight and support, while passing down wisdom and
knowledge. Mentoring can do a number of things for the finance organization for giving the best to their team member for
developing their career and thus elevate their level of contributions. Some of these are in areas such as skill development, inspiring
excellence, supporting career enrichment, navigating tricky situations, building a network that includes referring them to important
people in their field. To put simply, mentoring follows an open and evolving agenda and deals with a range of issues that
strengthens the link between strategy and development.
Pushing in the right direction
Mentoring is a much sought after method for development of finance professionals. It gives access to skills and competencies for
goal setting, performance review, succession planning, behavioral assessment, realigning roles/opportunities, realizing retention
goals, creative thinking, building analytical/influencing skills, fostering leadership skills, facilitating easy access to knowledge,
experience and insight that other initiatives are unable to do. Speed, Access, Flexibility and Creativity will be the key thrust while
mentoring. Experienced, credible and trustworthy mentoring can serve as a hub for ideas on elevating their career by working
through concerns, issues, development needs or career opportunities based on the unique circumstances and professional
interests. Easy access to mentors guarantees finance professional that there is someone to look up to and who cares about them.
In short, a mentor will act as a dispassionate sounding board that FOLLOWS THE FLOW in terms of pushing big strategic issues that
will have an impact in the performance controlled by the finance professional.
Making career program work
Career Development Program (CDP) is a discovery process that helps finance organization and its professionals to bridge the
gap between their aspirations and their organization's goals. CDP is an important link to aligning finance professionals to their
organization to meet the growing functional demands in the fast-paced business world. The program design will include a
statement of goals with roles, responsibilities and limits to expectations for all the participants. It uses mentoring to guide
professionals in assessing their professional needs, conduct an effective in-house search that fits their skill level for enhancing
their career prospects in finance, and connect them to opportunities within the organization. This program will bring application
of broader external perspectives or knowledge within the bounds of strict code of ethics, which at all times will be simple,
honest, unbiased, confidential and impartial to promote best career development practices by ensuring adequacy before
excellence. Through our program we aspire to cultivate the confidence, drive, and abilities in all of the finance professionals to
harness their potential to elevate their organizational performance. The thrust will be ALWAYS DOING GOOD for the well-being of
the finance organization and its professionals by aligning them to their roles/goals.
Finding the path
There is no special method or formula to finding a career advancement/shift. What works for one person within an organization
may not work for another. The underlying philosophy for mentoring is encouraging self-directed initiatives that enable
developments in knowledge, work, and career advancement through insightful thinking, dialogue and reflection. In this
mentoring journey both the finance organization and its professionals can experience enhanced self-esteem, better fulfilment of
developmental needs, organizational recognition and an extension of influence in and on the organization. In fact this
relationship with finance organization may bring exposure to new ideas, other perspectives and intellectual stimulation. Benefits
to finance organization and its team members include: (i) access to an informed second opinion, gaining insight into its
performance through a ‘critical friend’, identifying development needs and opportunities as well as learning from the
experience of the mentor, and (ii) better use of existing skills, development of additional competencies and higher self-esteem .
