based out of Los Angeles, California
that makes sustainable fashion for
women. They hold themselves to a
standard of sustainability by being
carbon, water, and waste neutral.

expensive with tops averaging $128.
Reformation
Sustainable fashion that is sold as
brand new tends to be more
expensive compared to fast fashion
due to the care given to ethically
sourced material, higher quality
production, and overall better
management along the entire
production line.
Affordability
9. CHALLENGES

support the environmental, social, and
ethical well-being of our people and
planet.
Although challenges do exist, there is a
substantial amount of compelling data to
support this lifestyle switch.

Editor's Notes
Sustainable fashion (also known as green, slow, or ethical fashion) is a movement that focuses on the ethical production of clothing as well as reforming the fashion system to be more environmentally conscious.
Global to local
Sustainable fashion has a localism focus as it aims to reduce many of the harmful aspects of fast fashion, a globalized form of consuming fashion. Sustainable fashion is a new era of change that will support our environment, earth, and humans much more ethically
The main goal of sustainable fashion is to minimize any environmental or socio-economic impacts related to fashion. This includes caution using natural resources, maximizing product use, and improving work conditions along the chain of production.
Sustainable fashion includes all aspects of the fashion life cycle; design, production, manufacturing, transport, marketing, sale, use, reuse, and recycling.
Fashion is the second largest polluter with 10% of global carbon emissions and is a major contributor to the current climate crisis in the world.
The creation of fabric and textiles uses large amounts of water, energy, chemicals, and other resources that are harmful to our environment.
Many of us are blind to this occurrence, which makes it easy to consume anything, and especially fashion.
Fast fashion is an industry that contributes to these issues of environmental degradation and socio-economic inequality that has prompted the need for sustainable fashion.
Fast fashion is a highly profitable, fast-paced process of mass-producing trendy fashion designs at low cost. Fast fashion is accessible, affordable, and convenient and has become a large part of consumerist culture. Fast fashion companies, like H&M, Forever 21, and Hollister, generate a huge profit in making fast fashion, but it comes at a price.
1960s- started at the same time as the environmental movement
1980- anti fur campaign
1990 – fast fashion is born, ethical fashion becomes popular
1990-2000 - At the same time, "eco-fashion" movements, closer to the sustainable fashion movements of today, started to appear, with companies such as Esprit launching its « Ecollection », Patagonia and Katharine Hamnett raising awareness on the environmental impacts of the fashion industry
2013 – 8-story garent factory collapsed killing over 1000 workers and injuring 2500+
Sustainable fashion starts to become popular as climate change movement becomes larger
Rebirth of counter movements like slow fashion
Vintage shopping, thrift shopping, recycling and upcycling

WHAT IS SUSTAINABLE FASHION
An introduction and 3 steps for getting started
HOW TO ENGAGE WITH ETHICAL FASHION
Clara Vuletich ted talk
Ethical treatment in fashion, Consumer behavior, the fashion lifecycle, sustainable fashion values
Unclear definition
Can make it hard to find sustainable clothing if you don’t know exactly what you are looking for
Study34 defines sustainable fashion as “garments that have been made in a way that is mindful to the many environmental issues the fashion industry touches upon
When purchased new, sustainable fashion can be expensive
Important to note that not all sustainable fashion has to be new, part of sustainability include being resourceful and utilizing thrift stores, upcycling, and hand-me-downs
Reformation – has great values as a company but is expensive compared to fast fashion stores
Paying for shipping, no coupons, longer wait time, accessibility- fast fashion is made to be more convenient, not able to keep up with trends as quickly
Low impact, natural, organic material
Hemp, linen, cotton, silk, wool, and leather (biodegradable)
Minimize byproduct waste to not pollute natural resources
Water, energy, plastic
Renewable energy powered factory
Equal pay, not using child labor or pregnant women, fair wages
Healthy work environment – light, air, breaks, communication
Diversity and inclusion
People of color disadvantaged
Cultural appropriation
Marginalized bodies – plus size or disabled
Reduces harm to people and planet
No animal cruelty
Transparency
Ethical fashion covers a wide range of issues such as living wages, working conditions, health and safety, forced labour, child labour. It means going beyond merely following local labour laws. Ethical fashion can also include the fair treatment of animals, vegan and cruelty-free fashion.
Educate yourself
The first step lies in building awareness and willingness to change
Educate self about the resources available
Reduce, reuse, recycle
Avoid purchasing in general if you can, repurpose clothes, donate clothes
Invest in sustainable fashion
Although pricey, clothing made ethically will last you much longer and be better quality, if you can afford it you should invest in nicer brands
The pandemic has forced all of us to take a step back and reset our priorities. One key takeaway that has clearly emerged is that a new transparent model that showcases verified sustainable practices will have an edge over other traditional business models.”
. But to survive this pandemic and emerge stronger, leaders in apparel, footwear, and textiles must incorporate sustainability within stabilization and new growth strategies, rather than retreat from commitments.
Challenges such as unclear definitions of what sustainable fashion exactly means, affordability, and some inconvenience, there is the opportunity to contribute to a more sustainable future by lowering the amount of global emissions that come from the fashion industry.
You do not have to go buy an entirely brand new sustainable wardrobe. Use what you’ve got, repurpose it, and when you need new clothes try to shop second hand or purchase something that will last you a long time.
In the end, it comes down to consumer responsibility. We won’t make a big change overnight, but we can adopt a sustainable lifestyle through fashion that will allow us environmental protection, social equity, and economic vitality, the three pillars of sustainability.
