Constantine Cavafis was one of the most important Greek poets of the modern era. Born in 1863 in Alexandria, Cavafy's poetry was peculiar for its time due to its sparse language, lack of adjectives, and use of the Jambian rhythm without rhyme. While initially his poetry was popular only in Greece, Cavafy's poems have since been translated into many languages and his work has come to occupy a prominent place in European poetry.
