1- Objectives:
1- Identify type of well testing
2- Identify methods of well testing interpretation
3- Identify the software programs which used in well testing analysis
2- Introduction:
Why well Testing?
Tests on oil and gas wells are performed at various stages of drilling,
completion and production. The test objectives at each stage range
from simple identification of produced fluids and determination of
reservoir deliverability to the characterization of complex reservoir
features. Most well tests can be grouped either as productivity testing
or as descriptive/reservoir testing.
Productivity well tests are conducted to;
o Identify produced fluids and determine their respective
volume ratios.
o Measure reservoir pressure and temperature.
o Obtain samples suitable for PVT analysis.
o Determine well deliverability.
o Evaluate completion efficiency.
o Characterize well damage.
o Evaluate workover or stimulation treatment.
Descriptive tests seek to;
o Evaluate reservoir parameters.
o Characterize reservoir heterogeneities.
o Assess reservoir extent and geometry.
o Determine hydraulic communication between wells.

Inflow Performance Relationship (IPR)
IPR governed by rock-fluid properties and near-wellbore conditions
PI = STB/psi = 1/(IPR slope) =Q/(Pi-Pwf)
Where: PI – Productivity Index Q- Total production BPD
Pi-Reservoir pressure Pwf- wellbore pressure
Pi-Pwf= Drawdown

3.3- Draw-Down Test (DD):
A well is flown at a constant rate and the pressure change (decline)
is monitored
Derived Parameters: k, s, d
3.4- Build-Up Test (BU):
A flowing well is shut in and the pressure change (build-up) is
monitored
Constant rate assumption during a test is easily achieved (zero
production!)
Derived Parameters: k, , d, s (indirect), Pi,
4-Well Test Simulation Software Programs
In well testing in general and in well test interpretation software
there are several software programs
Numerical well testing is becoming popular
Integrated interpretation methodology incorporating both analytical
and numerical techniques is required.
The most famous Well Test Software programs are:
1- Saphir (Kappa):
One of the easiest to use and most popular well testing packages
available in the market today. Has around 1400 site licenses with
200 companies (including Schlumberger).
2- PanSystem (EPS):
PanSystem is a popular well test analysis software - probably
more ‘scientific’ than Saphir.
Reasonable graphical user interface and has all features of
an advanced well test interpretation package.
Has an integrated interpretation environment involving
derivative plots, specialized analysis, and non-linear
regression.
PanSystem has an interface to numerical simulation -
PanMesh is based on finite-element technology.

3-Interpret 2000 (Baker Hughes)
Conventional analytical interpretation and modelling application -
much of the original program development was by Alain
Gringarten.
No numerical options.
Has a nice user interface, which appears to be very similar to
Saphir.
iac (Schlumberger)Zod)-4
Consists of two separate programs: test design and test
-interpretation. Each of these is divided into a number of sub

and selective inflow performance (SIP) analysis
..
5- Weltest 200 (Schlumberger).
Weltest 200 is an integrated well test analysis package which is able to use
It is partially integrated..ECLIPSE to calculate numerical solutions to well tests
within the ECLIPSE suite of applications, e.g. SimOpt..

What is Well Test Analysis ?
1- Well Test analysis is an inverse problem in which the model parameters are inferred by
analysing response of the reservoir to a given input
2- Most often the output response that is measured is pressure and the applied input
perturbation is rate change.
3-We use mathematical models to relate pressure response to rate history. The model may
or may not represent reality.
