3. Which specific production tasks have you
enjoyed most this year?
• My three favourite parts of the work this year have to have been, the animation,
poster designing and editing. The animation has been a real blast in terms of
simple design and understanding the physics, as I enjoy things that can be
numerically calculated, animating in such a simple countable way in terms of
movement was very fun. The poster design was very enjoyable, as I got to attempt
different methods that I had not thought of before to create something cool and
visually appeasing to me. I enjoyed the editing/filming as I had the chance to
use great equipment and have my first proper attempt at creating something on a
more professional level in video than I had before.
4. What challenges have you faced this
year in your practical work?
• In terms of challenges I would say that being able to keep attention on
everything has been a real issue, whether this has been due to the effect of lock
down or my own inability to sit still, this has led to me spending less time
focusing on parts of the projects than I should’ve, and more time of parts that
maybe do not need as much. I have been trying to overcome this by working on all
the parts of it with a bit more focus and drive. Another issue I have faced in
terms of practical work, was when I was filming my video at the start of the
year: my original plans where ruined as I caught covid at the time I was going to
be filming, which lead to me rushing my work more than I would like to admit.
Well it was rushed, I did spend a good amount of time making sure that it was up
to standards, and while the are many parts I wish to change I am going to take a
lesson from this and plan more contingency in the future.
5. Which process do you think you have
made the most development in?
• The process I believe that I have made the most development in is my research, as
I have never really done much research on projects I have attempted before. I
believe that I have made progress in this, as my ability to breakdown pieces of
media: what makes them work, the stye choices used, etc… has reached an good
level, to the point where I have developed my understanding of these specific
areas (a good example being my research on previous games nad the research on
magazines and double page spreads).
6. Which technical skill do you think is you
strongest?
• I believe that my strongest technical skill is my ability to edit, and while I
maybe have not shown this too my greatest ability, I believe that my music video
project shows that I am capable of utilising a lot of different techniques (look
more so at the analysis). While I have not reached and adequate level of
understanding of the DSLR cameras, I believe that my understanding of filming
techniques from research had massively improved as well, I do not believe I have
shown this very well though.
7. What do you think has been your best
project and why?
• My best project this year has probably been the poster/double page
spread/magazine front cover, the reason for this is that they are the most
visually appealing and are the projects that I feel most proud of, as my other
projects have not reached a level I have been happy with, and these have. Another
reason is that my understanding of Photoshop trumps my understanding of sound,
and also that my music video project, as my first project this year, was not what
I originally wanted.
8. Which project did you enjoy least and
why?
• The project that I have enjoyed the least would have to be the music video
project, as although video editing and filming is my favourite thing to do out of
the projects we have done , I feel that my understanding at the start of the
collage year (2 weeks latter for me) was sub par, and also having covid
completely ruined my motivation for it. My planning of this project was not great
either. I have enjoyed all of the projects though, so most of my decisions of why
I enjoyed this the least come from my opinions after the matter.
9. How have you managed your time
effectively this year?
• I think that I have not managed my time effectively, and while I Have not misused
most of it, I have definitely become a lot more slack then I used to be before
lockdown. I have become aware of how poorly I am managing my time, and am trying
to make some changes to my mentality about it. I have finished all of my projects
to a good level, but have not pushed myself to use my time well, and as a result
have not become nearly as invested in these projects I should be.
11. What roles/specialism do you see
yourself working in on future projects?
• I hope to be able to do lots of work with cameras, learning how to use them,
filming techniques, lighting techniques and the use of lighting and colour. I
would like to be able to eventually direct my own projects, short films, or even
have a role in a much larger scale production, as I am also very interested in
the writing and emotions in movies. I quite like productions that are either very
funny and satirical and movies that are capable of drawing a range of emotions
with very human feeling characters. I am however, very uncertain of what paths I
should choose to get me where I want, and it is quite overwhelming to think
about.
12. What do you see yourself doing at the
end of the course next year?
• I honestly do not know, I think that university would be quite a good
opportunity, as the is lots of access to equipment, and the are very
knowledgeable people to teach you. However I am not entirely certain as I may
decided that I actually want to just get straight I there and start joining
crews. I will most definitely be trying to get experience as a runner, or if I am
lucky on an actual production team, both during the next year and after collage
though. Honestly I am still quite overwhelmed with all the different options I
have, and will need to talk about it with people who are more knowledgeable about
this than me.
13. What research do you need to do in order to
explore your future progression options?
• The research I need to do is look at what universities have to offer and what
requirements I need to get into them. I also need to look at what routs other
people who have reached positions of directing or working behind cameras have
followed, and consider the path way I will need to follow. This is quite
difficult, so I will definitely need to ask my tutors for some advice on this, as
well as my family. I should also continue reading about cameras and watch some
YouTube videos about lighting and how I should use it. Also looking at what
effect lenses, frame rates and focus do would be great as well. Maybe I should
also look more at colour correction.
Editor's Notes
Consider 2-3 specific practical parts of your work this year [e.g. filming or editing, etc] and discuss why these have been your favoured parts of the course so far
Think about the work that has been most challenging this year [try and be specific when talking about tasks] and how you responded to it?
A process would be research or planning or time management, it could be a combination. Talk about what it is, how you feel you’ve developed and where this was most evident in the year
This is a technical skill like filming, editing, photo manipulation, designing adverts or using Photoshop – think of an example that shows your strength
This is looking at how you see yourself specialising as we move into the FMP and into Year 2
