Taste Of The Town
From Our Principal
Principal’s Message:
As we approach Catholic Schools Week 2015, it is an opportune time to thank all of those
who support St. Andrew Catholic School. Our existence and unique mission are inextricably tied to
the Catholic Church, and St. Andrew Church, in particular. We receive both financial and spiritual
support from our Church and clergy. That backing is continual and non-wavering. It is the kind of
support that Catholic schools have enjoyed across the United States for so many years. Our pastor, parochial vicar, and parish-
ioners all play a valuable part and we are most grateful.
What can we say about our parents? Many sacrifice to keep their children in this school because they believe in the val-
ue of a Catholic education. They donate money, prayers, volunteer time, and their expertise. Fundraising through the Taste of
the Town is a prime example of parental dedication. These efforts are noted and deeply appreciated.
The fine teachers and support staff of our school deserve our gratitude. Their work is mission driven, and they provide a
rigorous instructional program. Although their pay is not as high as their public school counterparts, they are well qualified and
have a level of workplace satisfaction that has resulted in very low employee turnover. We are pleased to count each of them as
a member of the St. Andrew School Family, and thank them for their service and care of our students.
Finally we thank our students. You are the reason for the existence of this school! We appreciate your hard work, en-
thusiasm, faithfulness, and school spirit.
To each of our constituents, a sincere thank you! Sincerely, Molly Halasz
Taste of the Town 2014…
Thank you to everyone who helped out to make the 2014 Taste of the Town a success! A fun
time was had by all!
Our new floor plan received great reviews, some of the comments were "it was much easier to
move around" ..."I liked having the band closer to the beer and wine garden; it was nice to be
able to enjoy the music" and loved that there were more food ticket lines, it didn't take me as
long to get food tickets"!
This event would not be possible without the tasty food that our local restaurants provide; it's a
big commitment on their part. With that said, the past chairs and committee members have laid
such a strong foundation for future chair's, it's up to us to make sure that we continue to recog-
nize our local restaurants and those who volunteer to be a part of our school's biggest fundrais-
er. We raise enough money each year to provide many needed improvements to our school. The
playground, new windows, smart boards and this year new bathrooms and water fountain sta-
tions!
I feel blessed to have worked with such a hardworking and dedicated committee. I wish Meg
Shavitz, the 2015 Chairperson much success!

Getting Settled at St. Andrews
Senora Sanford
St. Andrew School has a new Spanish teacher, Mrs. Claudia Sanford. A na-
tive of Bogota, Columbia, Mrs. Sanford has been in the U.S. for many
years. Her education degree and teaching experience were both obtained
in Ohio. She taught at St. Bridgid Catholic School near Columbus and then
relocated to SC with her family. Senora Sanford offers a varied curriculum
for St. Andrew students beginning with Kindergarteners at the conversa-
tional level, then working up to academic preparation for high school in the
middle school grades. Successful 8th
graders have the opportunity to earn
one high school credit in Spanish I before leaving our school.
Ms. JoLynn Prochaska
Ms. Prochaska teaches middle school science and math, plus 8th
grade homeroom. As a former St.
Andrew School student, she understands very well the mission and philosophy of our school. Her 7th
and 8th
grade students have begun preparations for Science Fair
which will be held in March. Ms. Prochaska and Ms. Sauvageau
are teaming up to make the written research portion of the project
an English/ Science collaboration. She is also arranging a spring-
time 8th
grade class trip to Charleston.
St. Andrew middle school students are responding well to their sci-
ence and math lessons with Ms. Prochaska.
What a wonderful new job I have! I cannot express how fun it is to
come to work every day and be the new secretary here at St. An-
drew School. I have enjoyed meeting all the new students and fami-
lies, seeing all the old familiar faces, and settling into my new posi-
tion. I have learned so much about our great school and I have got-
ten to know so many of the students. I must say we have such a
wonderful, polite, and energetic student body they keep me laugh-
ing and smiling. Many of you know that my husband, Thomas “T” , and I have two boys here at
school, Charlie in 6th
grade and Tommy in 5th
. Although “T” is a teacher at MBHS, this is my first
time working in a school. I have a degree in Psychology from UNC Wilmington, and have worked
for UsAirways and Frontier Airlines. I have even taught some classes at HGTC here in Conway. With
all of the many things I have done, nothing compares to working at St. Andrew School. I have felt
so welcomed not only by the fabulous teachers and staff but also by the parents. I know I have big
shoes to fill and I promise to do my best to make your St. Andrew School experience as wonderful
as mine.

to present their finished
books on the Smart-
Board!
We are very excited to report that our new program
to help strengthen our school community - Family, Fun,
& Fellowship, has been well received. We have had
great participation for each event. To date, we enjoyed
the movie “Frozen” under the stars with popcorn and
drinks. In November we made scarecrows and fall
crafts while feasting on chili and hot dogs. At
Christmastime we sang carols around the St. Andrew
neighborhood and warmed up with hot chocolate and
cookies. We enjoyed seeing everyone at our potluck
game night in January. The events have been scheduled
around a Mass time to make it convenient for
all. Remaining events include International dance
lessons at the end of March, and wrapping it up with a
family picnic, May 31st at Myrtle Beach State
Park. Please join us to connect and get to know your
St. Andrew families. If you would like to volunteer or
have any questions, please call Mary Hollingsworth (997
-6673, Rina Klein (267-5624), or Meg Shavitz (602-
2412).

OUR CHRISTMAS RECITAL
On Oct. 9, the fifth graders took their annual field trip to Ingram Planetarium in Sun-
set Beach, NC. They watched the show Oasis in Space which was about where in
space we might find planets that may have or had water. This concept gave them a
different view of ‘life in space’.
Next, they saw a live star movie that featured planets that could be seen at night
during the fall. They had a great time in the Science Hall which included a
hurricane simulator and interactive learning games. After a busy morning
of learning and fun, our trip ended with lunch at Golden Corral where, of
course, the chocolate fountain was the biggest hit!

Help 4 Kids
Mrs. Hancheck’s First grade had a baby shower for
Mary in December. Each child brought in a request-
ed item such as a blanket, rattle, clothes, bible, etc.
Attached to each item was a special quote along with a
Bible verse. We created 4 baskets for needy moms.
The children were excited to know that they were
helping babies get a wonderful start in life!

Catholic School Newsletter Highlights Faith, Learning and Community

  • 1. Catholic School faith ~ love ~ learning 2014 FALL-WINTER NEWSLETTER Community is at the heart of Catholic Education Taste Of The Town
  • 2. From Our Principal Principal’s Message: As we approach Catholic Schools Week 2015, it is an opportune time to thank all of those who support St. Andrew Catholic School. Our existence and unique mission are inextricably tied to the Catholic Church, and St. Andrew Church, in particular. We receive both financial and spiritual support from our Church and clergy. That backing is continual and non-wavering. It is the kind of support that Catholic schools have enjoyed across the United States for so many years. Our pastor, parochial vicar, and parish- ioners all play a valuable part and we are most grateful. What can we say about our parents? Many sacrifice to keep their children in this school because they believe in the val- ue of a Catholic education. They donate money, prayers, volunteer time, and their expertise. Fundraising through the Taste of the Town is a prime example of parental dedication. These efforts are noted and deeply appreciated. The fine teachers and support staff of our school deserve our gratitude. Their work is mission driven, and they provide a rigorous instructional program. Although their pay is not as high as their public school counterparts, they are well qualified and have a level of workplace satisfaction that has resulted in very low employee turnover. We are pleased to count each of them as a member of the St. Andrew School Family, and thank them for their service and care of our students. Finally we thank our students. You are the reason for the existence of this school! We appreciate your hard work, en- thusiasm, faithfulness, and school spirit. To each of our constituents, a sincere thank you! Sincerely, Molly Halasz Taste of the Town 2014… Thank you to everyone who helped out to make the 2014 Taste of the Town a success! A fun time was had by all! Our new floor plan received great reviews, some of the comments were "it was much easier to move around" ..."I liked having the band closer to the beer and wine garden; it was nice to be able to enjoy the music" and loved that there were more food ticket lines, it didn't take me as long to get food tickets"! This event would not be possible without the tasty food that our local restaurants provide; it's a big commitment on their part. With that said, the past chairs and committee members have laid such a strong foundation for future chair's, it's up to us to make sure that we continue to recog- nize our local restaurants and those who volunteer to be a part of our school's biggest fundrais- er. We raise enough money each year to provide many needed improvements to our school. The playground, new windows, smart boards and this year new bathrooms and water fountain sta- tions! I feel blessed to have worked with such a hardworking and dedicated committee. I wish Meg Shavitz, the 2015 Chairperson much success! Lisa Monticello
  • 3. Getting Settled at St. Andrews Senora Sanford St. Andrew School has a new Spanish teacher, Mrs. Claudia Sanford. A na- tive of Bogota, Columbia, Mrs. Sanford has been in the U.S. for many years. Her education degree and teaching experience were both obtained in Ohio. She taught at St. Bridgid Catholic School near Columbus and then relocated to SC with her family. Senora Sanford offers a varied curriculum for St. Andrew students beginning with Kindergarteners at the conversa- tional level, then working up to academic preparation for high school in the middle school grades. Successful 8th graders have the opportunity to earn one high school credit in Spanish I before leaving our school. Ms. JoLynn Prochaska Ms. Prochaska teaches middle school science and math, plus 8th grade homeroom. As a former St. Andrew School student, she understands very well the mission and philosophy of our school. Her 7th and 8th grade students have begun preparations for Science Fair which will be held in March. Ms. Prochaska and Ms. Sauvageau are teaming up to make the written research portion of the project an English/ Science collaboration. She is also arranging a spring- time 8th grade class trip to Charleston. St. Andrew middle school students are responding well to their sci- ence and math lessons with Ms. Prochaska. What a wonderful new job I have! I cannot express how fun it is to come to work every day and be the new secretary here at St. An- drew School. I have enjoyed meeting all the new students and fami- lies, seeing all the old familiar faces, and settling into my new posi- tion. I have learned so much about our great school and I have got- ten to know so many of the students. I must say we have such a wonderful, polite, and energetic student body they keep me laugh- ing and smiling. Many of you know that my husband, Thomas “T” , and I have two boys here at school, Charlie in 6th grade and Tommy in 5th . Although “T” is a teacher at MBHS, this is my first time working in a school. I have a degree in Psychology from UNC Wilmington, and have worked for UsAirways and Frontier Airlines. I have even taught some classes at HGTC here in Conway. With all of the many things I have done, nothing compares to working at St. Andrew School. I have felt so welcomed not only by the fabulous teachers and staff but also by the parents. I know I have big shoes to fill and I promise to do my best to make your St. Andrew School experience as wonderful as mine. Mrs. Michelle Glenn
  • 4. 3rd and 7th graders working together to create Christmas picture books using iPads. They can't wait to present their finished books on the Smart- Board! We are very excited to report that our new program to help strengthen our school community - Family, Fun, & Fellowship, has been well received. We have had great participation for each event. To date, we enjoyed the movie “Frozen” under the stars with popcorn and drinks. In November we made scarecrows and fall crafts while feasting on chili and hot dogs. At Christmastime we sang carols around the St. Andrew neighborhood and warmed up with hot chocolate and cookies. We enjoyed seeing everyone at our potluck game night in January. The events have been scheduled around a Mass time to make it convenient for all. Remaining events include International dance lessons at the end of March, and wrapping it up with a family picnic, May 31st at Myrtle Beach State Park. Please join us to connect and get to know your St. Andrew families. If you would like to volunteer or have any questions, please call Mary Hollingsworth (997 -6673, Rina Klein (267-5624), or Meg Shavitz (602- 2412).   The 3rd graders really enjoyed studying rocks with the Children's Museum of South Carolina! • 5. On Oct. 9, the fifth graders took their annual field trip to Ingram Planetarium in Sun- set Beach, NC. They watched the show Oasis in Space which was about where in space we might find planets that may have or had water. This concept gave them a different view of ‘life in space’. Next, they saw a live star movie that featured planets that could be seen at night during the fall. They had a great time in the Science Hall which included a hurricane simulator and interactive learning games. After a busy morning of learning and fun, our trip ended with lunch at Golden Corral where, of course, the chocolate fountain was the biggest hit!
