Why do we have public sectors?
- To encourage community engagement and improve quality of life
(Lunn, 2021, p.3)
- To provide opportunities to people of all incomes (Lunn, 2021, p.3)

Characteristics of public sectors:
- Lower costs (free or subsidized) (Lunn, 2021, p.3)
- Engaging people of all incomes to join the community (Lunn, 2021,

- Uses tax revenue, sponsorships or grants (Lunn, 2021, p.3)
- Government is involved (Lunn, 2021, p.3)

3. CLOVERDALE RECREATION CENTRE

• Service Sector: Public
• Recreation centres are subsidized community centers
where the public can participate in order to improve their health,
fitness, and overall quality of life (Lunn, 2021, p.3). Multiple
activities are offered (sports, art, events, etc.) and those with a
variety of income and their families can participate (Lunn, 2021,
p.3). It encourages the “good” in the community (Lunn, 2021, p.3)
• SPSC 2210 Connection:
• This is an example of recreation since the government
plays a role in providing leisure and recreation departments, and
encourages cohesive communities (Lunn, 2021, p.5). The
Cloverdale Recreation centre provides activities at a free or
subsidized cost so that members of the community- and of all
incomes- are able to enhance their quality of life through wellbeing
(Lunn, 2021, p.3). The lower costs come from the municipal
government and their tax-based funding (Lunn, 2021, p.3).

• Service Sector: Public
• Public sectors are subsidized or free to be
accessible to people of varying incomes and socio-economic
backgrounds (Lunn, 2021, p.3) Public schools are funded
through taxpayers, which is why attending Lord Tweedsmuir
is free (Lunn, 2021, p.3). This school provides hundreds of
students who have diverse socio-economic backgrounds. It is
a necessary, and the school board and local government are
also involved (Lunn, 2021, p.3).
• SPSC 2210 Connection:
• This is an example of education since it is a
school. The public school provides the necessary means to
students for them further their education. It can also be
physical education since it is an element that is taught in
school through courses. Furthermore, Lord Tweedsmuir is a
high school with the inclusion of sports. The varying sports
teams are typically coached by volunteers. The taxpayers
allow for students to engage in a good education while
exploring opportunities that would otherwise be difficult to
attain without the help of this public sector.

5. CLOVERDALE
ATHLETIC PARK

• Service Sector: Public
• Public sectors can include parks since they
offer opportunities to the general public to enhance the
quality of life and overall well-being (Lunn, 2021, p.3).
The parks are easily accessible and include disability
access and parking as well. The park is maintained and
funded through taxpayers and continues to be
overlooked by the government (Lunn, 2021, p.3). The
Cloverdale Athletic Park provides a beneficial and safe
environment for the general public to enjoy (Lunn,
2021, p.3).
• SPSC 2210 Connection:
• This location connects to recreation since it
prioritizes valuable opportunities for the community
(Lunn, 2021, p.3). The park is full of multiple sporting
areas which are used for sports such as: soccer, tennis,
basketball, softball, football, and more. It focuses on the
promotion of health and recreation by providing to serve
the community (Lunn, 2021, p.5).

SECTORS
Why do we have commercial sectors?
- Provides business opportunities relating to leisure and
recreation (Lunn, 2021, p.6)
- Profit can be made (Lunn, 2021, p.6).
- Provides recreation goods, services, and supplies (Lunn,
2021, p.6).
Characteristics of commercial sectors:
- Primarily for profit (Lunn, 2021, p.6)
- Based on supply and demand (Lunn, 2021, p.6)
- Individuals and corporations are involved (Lunn, 2021,
p.6).

7. SNAP FITNESS 24/7

• Service Sector: Commercial
• Commercial sectors primarily focus on profit
and run on supply and demand (Lunn, 2021, p.6). In
this case, Snap Fitness is a private gym, where
members must pay a fee in order to use the facility.
They use advertising to bring in more revenue through
the member fees from when members join, and aim
for a specific market group (Lunn, 2021, p.6). It is
service oriented but completely financial based (Lunn,
2021, p.6).
• SPSC 2210 Connection:
• This is an example of commercial recreation.
Snap Fitness does encourage the promotion of better
health and overall wellbeing, but with a cost. This
means that this facility is profit oriented and is a
suitable means for recreation to those who are able to
afford the services (Lunn, 2021. p,6).

Service Sector: Commercial
Commercial service sectors rely on profit, since they collect
revenue through fees (Lunn, 2021, p.6). Cloverdale Catholic School is a
private school where fees begin at $395 for non-parishioners and $330 for
parishioners of the Precious Blood Church (Cloverdale Catholic School,
2021). They provide recreation, education, and more but all at a cost.
Partnerships are also a contributing factor to commercial services, and the
Precious Blood Church is Cloverdale Catholic School’s partner in this
case (Cloverdale Catholic School, 2021).
SPSC 2210 Connections:
Cloverdale Catholic School can be seen as commercial
(physical) education and commercial recreation. It relies on the consumer
to pay, and then a profit is made (Lunn, 2021, p. 7). Although the school
provides a means to recreation, it is not accessible to all due to the cost.
Some positive benefits are: employment, increased properly values,
stimulate economies, and increased recreation opportunities 9Lunn, 2021,
p.7). However, this also means that it equally has negative effects such as:
short life cycles, hurting land values, overuse of natural resources, and
exclusivity (Lunn, 2021, p.7).

9. BOX2FIT

Service Sector: Commercial
Box2Fit is a boxing gym that is a part of the commercial sector. It profits
from the revenue that the members pay in order to participate in lessons, or to use the
facility. It is based on consumer desires and provides high level training that is
difficult to find (Lunn, 2021. p.6). They target a specific demographic, and remain
competitive yet affordable (Lunn, 2021, p.8).
SPSC 2210 Connection:
Box2Fit is a gym that is a part of recreation and coaching. It is recreation
since they promote overall improvement of health and wellbeing through boxing,
although it is at a cost (Lunn, 2021, p.3). It is also coaching since they also provide
private boxing lessons with specialized training (Box2Fit, 2021). The needs of the
general public is addressed by providing a facility in which recreation is encouraged.

• Characteristics of voluntary sectors:

• - Relies on membership and donations, and creates formalized groups (Lunn, 2021,

• - Adults pay regular membership cost while children are subsidized (Lunn, 2021, p.9).

MINOR HOCKEY
ASSOCIATION

• Service Sector: Voluntary
• The Cloverdale Minor Hockey Association is a part of the voluntary category. The voluntary
sector relies on the members to sustain survival, focuses on fundraising, investing, and targets specific
groups (Lunn, 2021, p.10). Since this association is completely run on volunteers, including the coaches, it is
voluntary.
• SPSC 2210 Connection:
• The Cloverdale Minor Hockey Association provides recreation to the youth, while promoting
good health. Since it is run on volunteers, subsidies can be seen through public sector assistance and
fundraising (Cloverdale Minor Hockey Association, 2021) their services to others (Lunn, 2021, p.9). It relates
to the aspect of recreation where the services that are provided should be of collective interest and serve
the overall needs of the community (Lunn, 2021, p.5). It is also connected to coaching since the volunteer
coaches focus on developing knowledge and skills in a specific context.

BASEBALL

• Service sector: Voluntary
• The Cloverdale Minor Baseball
Association is completely led by volunteers. They rely
on fundraisers, donations, and other member in order to
survive (Lunn, 2021, p.9). In general, they are closest
in ties with the local community as well (Lunn, 2021,
p.8).
• SPSC 2210 Connection:
• The Cloverdale Minor Baseball
Association is a part of leisure and recreation. Like
other forms of recreation, they promote health and
personal well being 9Lunn, 2021, p,3). The athletes are
able to participate in a community sport to encourage
greater health while having fun, and the volunteers help
their community by providing these services to the
youth. Coaching is also connected to this association
since there volunteer coaches are focused on
developing skills one sport at a time, and train the
athletes to become more knowledgeable and
specialized.

13. CLOVERDALE MINOR SOFTBALL
ASSOCIATION

• Service Sector: Voluntary
• The Cloverdale Minor Softball Association is an all-
volunteer run non-profit association (Cloverdale Minor Softball,
2021). This means that they rely on fundraisers, members, the
community, and donations in order to continue to operate (Lunn,
2021, p.9). They provide age-related programs and contribute to
the health and wellness of the community in Cloverdale (Lunn,
2021, p.9).
• SPSC 2210 Connections:
• The Cloverdale Minor Softball Association is recreational
but also connects to coaching. Recreation works to improve
cohesiveness within a community by finding participants who all
benefit from the services. The sport encourages health and fitness,
as well as discipline. The coaches are all volunteers and choose to
put time aside in order to coach the teams. They work to provide
the athletes with further knowledge and development in the sport
