new generation of
Manure Spreaders have
been selling well and creating a
lot of interest.
Sid Patterson, head of Red
Power Equipment in Boissevain,
Manitoba, says that customer
feedback so far has been pretty
good.
“What they’re saying is that it’s
nice to have this kind of capaci-
ty with the modern day farming
with larger cattle units.”
Yvon Caouette has heard similar
comments in St. Paul, Alberta,
where his family runs Paul Caouette
& Sons Implements.
“Capacity: everybody wants
the biggest and the best.”
The larger capacity spreader
makes economic sense. Farmers
and operators are hauling ma-
nure longer distances, so a larger
load per trip is efficient, and
economical.
“The 755 unit has huge
capacity for a reasonable price,”
said Patterson. “And with mod-
ern day farming where you have
to haul your manure further, the
large capacity machine is a huge
asset.”
Caouette agrees that the new
machines are handy. “Yeah, the
guys want to make less trips
down the road.”
Because of some of the new
manure management laws in
Canada, farmers and operators
will have to ensure they have a
manure management plan to
spread manure over a larger area.
This means hauling manure
larger distances.
“The situation where the farmer
used to apply all his manure in the
little 40 acre chunk around the
house, that ain’t going to happen
anymore,” said Patterson, “Be-
cause if they test that and find that
the nitrate levels are too high, he
will be shut down.”
For the larger capacity farms
and cattle operations, having the
large spreader on their lot rather
than relying on custom manure
spreaders is convenient. Farmers

The Leon Mfg. Company booth displayed several product lines at the Cummings &
Bricker Expo in Batavia, NY in September.
The Cummings & Bricker Expo held in Batavia, NY,
was a success for Leon’s Mfg. Company Inc.
The trade show, held in September for dealers in a 13
state area surrounding New York state, was the first of its
kind in North America for this ag equipment dealer.
The size of the venue, covering approximately 2 ½
football fields, as well as the design of the site, was
impressive. Large pots of yellow chrysanthemums
adorned each booth, located in the rear Holiday Inn
parking lot.
“The objective of C& B was to have at least 100 dealers
attend the show; however this was exceeded with a total
of 145 dealers registered with a total number of 300
people attending the 2 day show,” said Leon’s Sales
Supervisor Henry Malin, who attended the exposition.
The Leon Mfg. Company booth displayed several
product lines, and included the 50 and 90 Rear Blades, the
12 foot 2530 and 3000 Dozer Blades, and the 650 Scraper.
Most of the dealer interest was centered on the Dozer
blades, but a fair number of dealers expressed a curious
interest in the Scraper unit.
Henry had the opportunity to speak to many dealers
and felt there was some solid interest in Leon products.
“On the whole I would rate the show as being moder-
ately successful, with the morning and afternoon being
quite busy,” said Henry.

products piqued a lot of interest
at the 24th
annual Big Iron Farm Show
in West Fargo, North Dakota in
September.

Nathe visited with farmers at the
booth, inviting them to look inside
Leon’s chainless manure spreaders.
“Step up to a Leon Spreader. Look
inside: no Apron” said the sign on a
ladder next to one of our 425 Spread-
ers. Once people got a look inside the
unit, they would ask questions about
the hydraulic push mechanism, a key
selling point for our spreaders.
“Everybody’s used to seeing an apron
chain at the bottom of a manure
spreader to drag the manure back,”
explained Nathe. “We’ve got the
hydraulic push mechanism. You can then
go on and explain all about it.
“Everybody hates fixing manure
chains when they break, because
they’re full of manure – you’ve got to
empty it, shovel it all out, fix the
chain,” said Nathe. Which is where
Leon Spreaders are superior: “Just take
it out and use it” he said.
Leon had our full product line on
display, including the 1450 Scraper, the
130 Rear Blade, and a 8 foot snow
bucket.
“The scraper is a good product to
have at the show because the valley is
so flat. There’s lots of ditching done to
get water to drain,” said Nathe. “So
the scraper business in the valley is
pretty good.”
The Big Iron Farm Show is the
biggest fair around North Dakota,
held every year in the Red River Valley
Fairgrounds. A farm show for
agribusiness, it usually attracts over
70,000 national and international
visitors each year.

and they’re getting away from
getting custom guys,” said Caou-
ette, “And they figure with this big
size they could probably make it
pay.”
But these large size units are fit
for custom spreading as well.
“This machine will suit custom
work because of the larger capaci-
ty,” said Patterson. “And with the
larger upper beater, it does a better
job of spreading than what the old
machines did.”
