Overview Sociology is the scientific study of social interactions and organizations. It’s best
described as each person being a social being born into a social environment, developing
into a human being in a social environment, and living out life in a social environment.
Emotions, thoughts, touch, spoken words, and actions are all shaped by interactions with
other human beings. This module outlines how individuals develop sociological
consciousness. This module also covers the development of sociology and how research is
conducted using sociological theories. From the logic of science to using the steps in the
Scientific Method, different research methods can be used to consider research ethics. But
these methods would not be useful without the contributions of six influential sociologists –
Auguste Comte, Harriet Martineau, Herbert Spencer, Karl Marx, Émile Durkheim, and Max
