6. ORAGANISING FREE HEALTH CAMPS Rapid urbanization and distorted development patterns have caused migration of rural population to urban areas in search of food and job. Prevailing high disparity between the rich and the poor has forced this migrant population to settle in the small groups in unauthorized colonies called J.J.Clusters. Poverty, sub-human conditions, poor quality of life and lack of medical facilities have resulted in higher incidence of disease and thus high mortality, morbidity and birth rate pattern can be seen in the group of population. Today about 35% of Delhi NCR population is living in the J.J.Clusters and unauthorized colonies. Civic bodies are not able to do provide required civic amenities as they are all settled in the area classified as unauthorized by civic authorities themselves. Social Reform Organisation took a serious note of poor health status of residents of J.J.Clusters and decided to strengthen Health Dispensary to provide primary health care to the residents at their door-step according to their felt needs. Free camps are being organized in selected J.J. Clusters in different part of Delhi NCR on weakly basis. Future plans include have mobile dispensaries for door to door services.

18. A Look at Slum Problems Slums are the products of failed policies, bad governance, corruption, inappropriate regulations, dysfunctional land markets, unresponsive financial systems and a fundamental lack of political will. The rapid growth of urbanization is creating a number of problems. Whenever a big project is commenced, a lot of workers migrate to towns in quest of employment. With no proper place to live, they usually encroach public land and the sites earmarked for various developmental projects. This causes expansion of jhuggis and unauthorized colonies. Thus building enormous pressure on civic services and creating major bottlenecks in the proper development of cities. Problems Lack of basic amenities like safe drinking water, proper housing, and drainage and excreta disposal services; make slum population vulnerable to infections. These further compromise the nutrition requirements of those living in slums. REMEDY Problems of the slum can be dealt by little initiative taken by the government, NGOs and employers. Some of the possible solutions can be. We need to recognize that the urban poor are active agents and can contribute to national growth. Local authorities and national governments should collaborate with the organizations of the urban poor in upgrading slums and providing alternatives to slum formation. Whenever a worker migrates to a city for work his employer must ensure that he is provided with appropriate accommodation. This should be the responsibility of all big and small employers.
