Pros and Cons of Controversy
1.93% of higher education faculty believe critical thinking is an essential learning outcome.
A 2005 report by the Association of American Colleges and Universities demonstrated the need for
efforts to promote critical thinking by highlighting the disparity between the 93% of higher
education faculty that perceive critical thinking to be an essential learning outcome and the 6% of
undergraduate seniors that actually demonstrated critical thinking proficiency.

7.Teaching controversial topics helps students develop non–violent strategies for dealing with
conflict.
A 2008 case study of social studies teachers concluded that: "Teaching controversial issues allows
students to question and to express their fears in the safety of the classroom, and provides
opportunities to develop their social skills such as learning how to listen to one another, to deal with
difficult topics, and to handle their anger and frustrations without resorting to violence. Importantly,
it is not about teaching students to avoid conflict, because conflict and controversy are part of
human relationships, but rather where schools provide neutral grounds for rational discourse and
objective study."

8.Controversial issue assignments increase critical thinking skills and appreciation of cultural
diversity.
A 2003 evaluation of students given a controversial issue assignment found that:
98.25% "agreed, strongly agreed, or very strongly agreed" that "they were more sensitive to the
concerns of people from diverse populations" after completion of a controversial issue assignment. 9
6.4% "agreed, strongly agreed, or very strongly agreed" that "their knowledge about a population
other than their own" had increased.

Controversy: A Short Story
"I know I shouldn't pry into your personal business, but I've been your doctor since before you were
born. I've seen as you've continued to blossom into a beautiful young lady. Through those years I
think I know that you wouldn't be here unless that someone meant something to you, and with
saying that.. where is he?"
"Although you may be right. I just don't think that he needs to know, about this. He has so much on

you're right. He means something to me. That's why I'm going to let him go."

Controversy: Surveillance
Surveillance Essay
Some might say that surveillance is an arbitrary invasion of privacy and others might mention that it
is ВЁbig brotherВЁ watching over you with your best interest at hand. The controversial issues that
provoked controversy, is whether it is justifiable or not justifiable for people in positions of authority
to conduct surveillance of individuals. A textbook definition of surveillance is the continuous
observation of a place, person, group, or ongoing activity to gather information. Overall, surveillance
of the data and civilians phones can be favorable to their security and their community. One reasons
why monitoring an adolescent's phone can be beneficial is it can stop suicide attempts as well as
fatal actions. Another reason...show more content...
As the author explains how the Long Beach police uses cameras statewide, the author states,
"McDonnell has set up a system to tap into hundreds of privately owned cameras that are part of the
city's streetscape. The new program synchronizes law enforcement data with real–time video feeds
from parks, beaches, business corridors and even some retail centers," (Source 2). In other
words, Long Beach has installed cameras to record day and night throughout the city for the
safety of the community. The security system will show live feed of the community recording
and storing data, which can be accessed later to review any suspicious crime. For example, if an
attack happened and no one was caught, police have the technology to review the crime scene and
track the suspects afterward. Additionally, The Los Angeles Times credited journalist, Richard
Winton disclosed, "The cameras are connected to a city operations center with computer terminals
that can access an array of databases from the Justice Department, Department of Motor Vehicles
and other agencies, allowing staff to chase down the slimmest of clues, such as a partial license
plate in a bank robbery getaway," (Source 2). As shown above, the camera system automatically
saves the video evidence for police officers to access after a crime. The camera

Public Controversy: Case Study
ARGUMENT To appeal the District Court's ruling that Williams has sufficient access to media, he
needs to show there was not a public controversy in addition to showing this Court his nature and
extent of involvement in the particular controversy. Gertz v. Robert Welch, Inc., 418 U.S. 323,
352 (1974). The following factors need to be found for there to be a public controversy: a real
dispute that affects the general public; the dispute has to receive public attention because of the
possible effects; and the court must be able to separate the controversy from the defamatory article
in question. Thomas M. Cooley Law Sch. v. Kurzon Strauss, LLP, 759 F.3d 522, 530 (6th Cir.

THERE IS NOT A PUBLIC CONTROVERSY BECAUSE WILLIAMS IS BEING DEFAMED
FOR PRIVATE ACTIONS, NOT ACTIONS THAT AFFECT THE GENERAL PUBLIC. This is
not a public controversy because the defamatory article does not meet the following factors. A
public controversy must be: a real dispute that affects the general public; the dispute must receive
public attention because of the possible effects; and the court must be able to separate the
controversy from the defamatory article in question. Cooley, 759 F.3d 522, 530 (6th Cir. 2014).
To show a public controversy, there needs to be a preexisting controversy that affected the general
public. In Armstrong v. Shirvell, the Court concluded that Shirvell could not reconstruct
Armstrong's private conduct into a public controversy simply by alleging that Armstrong

a public controversy based on the reasoning from World Wide Ass'n of Specialty Programs v. Pure,

The Zoo Controversy Essay
Everybody's been to the zoo; they've either enjoyed a dolphin show, or fed the penguins. Zoos
have been a part of American culture for centuries. At first, a zoo could be seen as nothing more
than a jail cell for animals, but today, zoos are being completely transformed. What used to be
confined cages are now being revolutionized into acres of land for different species to reside in. The
opponents of zoos feel that they are inhumane and harmful to animals. However, zoos are beneficial
for several different reasons, including, animal conservation and captive breeding, scientific studies,
healthcare, and education. Daniel Martin, writer for mailonline.com, wrote an article about Angela
Smith who works as a Labor's Charities Minister....show more content...
Currently, animals in zoos are kept in well–clean, vast areas of land where they are free to roam
around in a habitat where they feel comfortable. According to a TIME Magazine article, The San
Diego Zoo spent 3.5 million dollars to construct a mock forest for five bears (Gibbs). The exhibit
includes trees, a waterfall, and even an electronic honey dispenser. According to the article,
"[w]hen the lush exhibit opened this summer, zoogoers loved it, and so did the bears. They
shredded the trees and rolled in the sod," (Gibbs). Instead of the small cages and foul odors that
most people associate with zoos, many zoos spend a large sum of their budget on keeping their
facilities pristine. Animal habitats are now bigger than ever, and more importantly, cleaned multiple
times a day, along with the animals' regular feedings. This further proves that zoos have made
drastic improvements over the introductory zoos most people associate with. Contrary to what
Smith believes, zoos are actually very beneficial for animals, one of the main reasons being
conservation of species in zoos. Since their beginning in Europe in the mid–19th century, zoos have
improved drastically; back then, zoos were merely for entertainment, where as now zoo owners are
more aware and concerned with the welfare of their animals (Masci). With the endangered species
list rising every year, it is imperative that scientists remain conscious of the number of

Controversy Essay Benefits
Controversy exists over whether people adhere to this believe that there are some benefits
associated with relaxing through playing sports in comparison with watching films or reading
books. In my vantage point, strenuous physical activity help everyone has a peaceful rest and
relaxing in that not only do physical activities make peace of mind and away from hustle and bustle
busy life in modern society, but also these activities improve their social activities.
The first aspect to point out is that physical activities have positive influence on peoples' personal
life. Moreover, doing these activities help them take a break from hectic life and unwind by
playing their favorite sports. Additionally, playing sports is a good source of escapism. In simple
term, people can take their mind off all collywobbles and tensions which are, nowadays, integral
part of a normal daily life. Imagine a despondent man who is gets back home after a long day of

perspicacity. If people develop relationships and share ideas with their new friends, they get familiar
with difference world views and perspectives. Conspicuously, they get a better understanding of their
lives and make wise decisions. As an illustration, consider the same example of a despondent man
who can meet up with his friends in football game. Notwithstanding becoming disappointed, he can

Is Brunei's water cleaner than the water of Citarum River, the world's dirtiest river in Indonesia?
It sure is but that does not mean we should ignore the fact that it is polluted. Dirty water has also
contributed to global warming; a problem the whole world is trying to reduce. Floating garbage on
the water is a sight nobody wants to see and no aquatic animals would want to live or not be able to

economy and could reduce the country's fish resources. The rivers are important sources of water

The Vaccine Controversy
The vaccine controversy is the dispute over the morality, ethics, effectiveness, and /or safety of
vaccinations. The medical and scientific evidence is that the benefits of preventing suffering and
death from infectious diseases outweigh rare adverse effects of immunization. Since vaccination
began in the late 18th century, opponents have claimed that vaccines do not work, that they are or
may be dangerous, that individuals should rely on personal hygiene instead, or that mandatory
vaccinations violate individual rights or religious principles. And since then, successful campaigns
against vaccinations have...show more content...
Other critics argue that immunity given by vaccines is only temporarily and requires boosters,
whereas those who survive the disease become permanently immune. Lack of complete vaccine
coverage increases the risk of disease for the entire population, including those who have been
vaccinated, because it reduces herd immunity. For example, measles targets children between the
ages of 9 and 12 months, and the short window between the disappearance of maternal antibody
(before which the vaccine often fails to seroconvert) and natural infection means that vaccinated
children frequently are still vulnerable. Herd immunity lessens this vulnerability, if all the children
are vaccinated. Increasing herd immunity during an outbreak or threatened outbreak is the most
widely accepted justification for mass vaccination. Mass vaccination also helps to increase coverage
rapidly, thus obtaining herd immunity, when a new vaccine is introduced. Commonly used vaccines
are a cost – effective and preventive way of promoting good health, compared to the cost of
treatment of acute or chronic diseases. In the U.S. during the year 2001, routine childhood
immunizations against seven diseases were estimated to save over $40 billion per year, overall
social costs including $10 billion in direct health costs, and the societal benefit – cost ratio for these
vaccinations was

Embryonic Stem Cell Controversy
The controversy over stem cell research's use in the medical field is almost two decades old. So
why the sudden intense return of fierce political debates over an old issue? It's because President
Obama recently revoked the ban on stem cell research, as he believes it holds the potential to
revolutionize the medical industry in the years to come. As USA Today quoted him saying in
March, after he stopped restricting federal funding for stem cell research, "At this moment, the full
promise of stem cell research remains unknown and should not be overstated. Scientists believe
these tiny cells may have the potential to help us understand, and possibly cure, some of our most
devastating diseases and conditions." The body's master cells are...show more content...
... the embryo would have been thrown away at an abortion clinic anyway. Now, given the choice of
completely wasting the life or using it in order to further research, I'd pick research." (http:/
/www.juniorpolitics.com/) The fertility clinics, however, appear to be stem cell research advocates'
favorite reference on how their work is ethical and humane in comparison. According to Michael
Kinsley, Time Magazine reporter, "Embryonic stem–cell studies are controversial because they
involve the destruction of human embryos. However, fertility clinics destroy far more human
embryos than stem–cell research ever would, yet they are not controversial." (http://www.time.com)
Pro–stem cell research scientists have found that citing fertility clinics as a similar field severely
lessens the educated opposition against their work. This is because most pro–life advocates and
mainstream Christians are advocates for the use of fertility clinics to help struggling couples get
pregnant. They view fertility clinics as a place to help create life, not take it. In this, I speak from
personal experience, as many of my Christian friends and relatives have been in and out of fertility
clinics throughout the years, attempting to procreate a being to love, raise, and care for. In short,
the debate boils down to the ancient debate of whether or not a fetus or human embryo is a life or
not. Pro–life advocates say that human fetuses are absolutely,

Free Speech Controversy Essay
Controversy of Free Speech
Two–hundred and twenty–eight years ago, our founding fathers instituted a previously taboo idea
of freedom of speech. Although today's society differs greatly from society in 1789, the main
principles of freedom of speech have been warped into an oasis for discriminatory speech, shutting
down others on their personal opinions and beliefs. For example, Native Americans have faced
violent oppression for centuries, specifically regarding the Trail of Tears when they were pulled
from their homes and settlements and forced to move, and the Dakota Pipeline project, when their
homes were invaded by industry itself. Today, colleges and universities have established speech
codes and other limits on speech that contradicts...show more content...
According to Campus Hate Speech Codes from Santa Clara University, discrimination that is
disallowed consists of: oral, written, graphic, or physical conduct against race, religion, color, origin,
gender, sexual orientation, age, disability, or veteran status that will create a hostile environment for
the victims. Speech codes are established to help protect minority members of an environment.
College and university speech codes are not necessarily targeted to silence people of their opinions,
but to stop unnecessary hate speech and harassment, bettering their campuses. While this pertains as
a great idea, both reality and the Bill of Rights would beg to differ. No matter what rules we as a
society establish, hate speech will always prevail. The truth is, no matter how many limits to free
speech are enforced, people are still going to neglectfully speak against others. Santa Clara
University's Campus Hate Speech Codes also states that encouraging artificial reality on campus will
ultimately prevent students from learning effectively to tolerate diversity and discrimination.
Basically, the attempt to shelter students from the reality outside a college campus damages their
ability to tolerate others beliefs and mannerisms. According to the First Amendment

The Controversy Of Racism And Racism
Racism, often used as a trigger word in the media, has come to the forefront of society recently. It
is nearly impossible to watch the news without seeing reports of police officers killing unarmed
black citizens or hearing a debate about the appropriate choice in regards to allowing refugees into
American borders. Though these prejudiced and bigoted ideas have existed since the rise of
humanity, many people believe racism to be something found only in the shadowy dregs of modern
society. Racial tension is the most strained it has been in decades. With racism regaining the
spotlight, people openly express their hateful rhetoric. As a social worker, I would struggle most
interacting with communities that spoke and acted openly against other races, such as members of
white supremacist populations.
Social Work Professionalism Remaining professional while listening to a client speak negatively
against another race is difficult. It is important to remain professional, while holding one 's
composure. For example, in one instance, I had to visit a client's home recently. Inside of the house
was a wall–to–wall confederate flag dГ©cor expressing the individual 's opinion. As a professional
worker, I was not able to discredit the client's opinion. I had to be self–aware and remind myself not
to cause a power struggle. According to NASW Code of Ethics, service is a core value where social
workers are supposed to assist the client in need and to aid the client with the problems he or

AUDIENCE As values have changed with modern and postmodern thought, artists have set to
create more shocking and confronting work to distinguish themselves from the rest. Marcel
Duchamp was perhaps the first to push the boundaries with his Fountain, a urinal in an art gallery,
which was voted the most influential artwork of the 20th Century by 500 artists and forced his
audience to think for themselves. Many artists have followed Duchamp, but have had to go to more

comprised of a female fetus head affixed with rabbit eyes and grafted onto the body of a bird. The
entire piece is afloat in a basin of formaldehyde. The museum had posted signs warning visitors
about controversial artwork and has scheduled a symposium on Aug. 22 to discuss ethical issues
surrounding the exhibit. Xiao defended his work from Beijing after a museum visitor in
Switzerland who saw the piece filed a criminal complaint. "It's precisely because I respect all life
that I did this," Xiao, who is known for his shocking artwork, told the Associated Press. "I want it
to be displayed." The bird and fetus "died because there was something wrong with them," he said.
"I thought putting them together like this was a way for them to have another life." Xiao has also
said the piece is a statement against genetic manipulation and modifications. Cultural differences
are quite obvious here. In Beijing this kind of artwork is completely acceptable, with political art,
controversial, unlike the West where you see political satire daily in cartoons. Beijing's Imperial
Museum even has a separate section for the Chinese public with embalmed bodies of grandparents
and their grandchildren and the like. According to Xiao, he bought the human fetus head in 1999 for
the equivalent of a few dozen US dollars from someone cleaning out a scientific exhibition hall. A

Controversies Surrounding Vaccine Essay example
Immunization is the process by which a person or animal becomes protected against a disease. Even
though it's "one of the greatest health development of the 20th century", the number of infants who
aren't fully vaccinated are increasing gradually over the past years. This happened because of all the
controversy surrounding vaccine. Despite the fact that it can prevent potentially life–threatening
diseases, people are paying less attention to those infections because they are rarely seen nowadays.
So people start to look at the vaccine and the possible side effects and now they fear that the vaccine
itself might be more harmful than it is helpful. Although there are some objections for the use of
vaccinations, I strongly support it for many...show more content...
Additionally, it may increase a child's likelihood of developing multiple sclerosis, suffering
intussusception and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. Even though vaccine can certainly cause
adverse effects, the risks of not being vaccinated far outweighed the small risks associated with
injection. For instance, the measles vaccine can cause a temporary reduction in platelets in 1 in
30,000 children, but 1 in 2,000 will die if they get measles itself. Vaccinationalso leaves a person
more vulnerable to other diseases because his or her natural immune system is weak from never
fighting off an infection. However, there is a price to pay with natural immunity. For example, a
natural polio infection can cause permanent paralysis. Vaccination can help prevent the disease
without having any after–complications.
Opponents also believe that government shouldn't have the right to intervene in the health decisions
parents make for their children. Since some people hold religious beliefs against immunization,
forcing them to do so is violating the First Amendment which guarantees religious freedom.
However, proponents stated that the public health is more important than an individual's views and
that no one should have the right to risk it to satisfy his or her personal moral, philosophy, or
religion. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, childhood vaccines are 90% to 99%
effective in preventing diseases. Even if the

The Easter Controversy Essay
The Easter Controversy
Easter is the most important celebration for Christianity because it commemorates the Resurrection
of Jesus Christ, a foundational notion upon which the faith is built. Accordingly, it is the principle
feast and the high point of the ecclesiastical year, which has been an established tradition as old as
Christianity. Easter has been universally observed since the middle of the second century. The
original celebration generally consisted of a vigil with readings followed by a feast with the
Eucharist. This was a time for rejoicing because the suffering, death, and resurrection of Jesus were
seen as a saving unit. Christ's transition from death to resurrection, which...show more content...
By the end of the second century, the majority of the Western churches had come to celebrate the
Resurrection on the Sunday that followed the 14th day of the Jewish month Nisan. The Western
Asiatic churches commemorated Jesus' death rather than His resurrection and observed it on the
14th day of Nisan, whether that day fell on a Sunday or not. Therefore, what became known as the
Easter Controversy was not an argument over the day of Jesus' resurrection, but rather a
disagreement over what day was most appropriate to commemorate it annually (Catholic
Encyclopedia).
The Easter Controversy is the name given to the drawn out dispute in the early Church over the
exact date for the celebration of Easter. As previously mentioned, this disagreement originated
between the West and East at about the middle of the second century. Basically, what was under
concern was whether the Easter celebration must be observed on a Sunday or if it should be
celebrated on the 14th day of Nisan, regardless of the day on which this date may fall. This was
the day on which the Jews celebrated Passover, which is why the Eastern churches like in Asia felt
that since the two festivals were related, it was only fitting to celebrate Easter on that same day.
Although these followers claimed to have received this practice from certain Apostles, specifically
John and Philip, they were

Controversy Argumentative Analysis
So often in today's media can stories wrapped in "controversy" be found plastered on screens and
print. These stories can range from legitimate issues such as personal rights to non–issues of people
losing their minds over a coffee cup, or so is reported. The fact of the matter is that people will find
just about any reason to be upset regardless of whether or not the concern is even minutely worth
considering and the groups and anti–groups surrounding the topic will snowball out of control in
size, misinformation, and irrationality. A common and unfortunate mode of thinking found today is
the idea of feelings trumping objective analysis and accurate information. So often will people fling
themselves into what they perceive as a truly important argument without considering how little
impact it may actually have nor whether or not the topic at hand is anything to be riled up about in
the first place. As a result, non–problems are shrouded in unnecessary controversy, often explosively.
Perhaps the most pathetic example of misguided rage was the 2015 Starbucks Christmas cup which
sported a minimalistic red design that left out references to Christmas in an effort to be more
inclusive. This ridiculous outrage is a prime example of how poorly thought out arguments often are

Too often will otherwise perfectly rational people disregard proper analysis and consideration for
how something makes them feel. This may perhaps sound reasonable, but it ignores the simple fact
that feelings regarding issues taken at face value are misguided at best. Something insignificant that
someone dislikes could send them into a flurry with that kind of logic, and it is that kind of logic
that causes controversy to arise unnecessarily. If people just took some time to properly analyze

  • 2. Pros and Cons of Controversy 1.93% of higher education faculty believe critical thinking is an essential learning outcome. A 2005 report by the Association of American Colleges and Universities demonstrated the need for efforts to promote critical thinking by highlighting the disparity between the 93% of higher education faculty that perceive critical thinking to be an essential learning outcome and the 6% of undergraduate seniors that actually demonstrated critical thinking proficiency. A 2008 case study of social studies teachers concluded that: "Teaching controversial issues allows students to question and to express their fears in the safety of the classroom, and provides opportunities to develop their social skills such as learning how to listen to one another, to deal with difficult topics, and to handle their anger and frustrations without resorting to violence. Importantly, it is not about teaching students to avoid conflict, because conflict and controversy are part of human relationships, but rather where schools provide neutral grounds for rational discourse and objective study." Source: P. Reitano, C. Kivunja, and K. Porter, "Teaching Controversial Issues In Schools to Prepare Children for a Sustainable Global Village," Australian Association for Research Education website, 2008 8.Controversial issue assignments increase critical thinking skills and appreciation of cultural diversity. A 2003 evaluation of students given a controversial issue assignment found that: 98.25% "agreed, strongly agreed, or very strongly agreed" that "they were more sensitive to the concerns of people from diverse populations" after completion of a controversial issue assignment. 9 6.4% "agreed, strongly agreed, or very strongly agreed" that "their knowledge about a population other than their own" had increased.

  • 4. Controversy: A Short Story "I know I shouldn't pry into your personal business, but I've been your doctor since before you were born. I've seen as you've continued to blossom into a beautiful young lady. Through those years I think I know that you wouldn't be here unless that someone meant something to you, and with saying that.. where is he?" "Although you may be right. I just don't think that he needs to know, about this. He has so much on his mind already, a baby, should be the least of his worries. Forgive me if I sound prude, but Tom you're right. He means something to me. That's why I'm going to let him go." "I'm glad to hear that saying my first name doesn't feel so quirky. You're are among one of the most intelligent young ladies the world has ever seen....show more content... He had a point, though. Grant was the father, and he has every right to know. I just don't think this its something he needs to hear. Considering that I planned on fleeting across the country. As I walk home I put my earphones in and start playing the song Diamonds Aren't Forever by Bring Me The Horizon. The clouds began to cover the sun, and just like my eyes, water began to fall out of the sky. This was the weather I'd have to get used to. Seattle was know for its grey skies and underground bands. I'd be leaving my life behind to start a new one. The song finished and the next song played was a drastic change in genre. Lego House by Ed Sheran. The sidewalk began to end, and the dirt road that I used to walk home had turned into quicksand. I was grateful that I wore converse today. Especially since they were the oldest pair I owned. It literally felt more like climbing compared to walking. An inclined road lead to the acres of land my parents owned. It took me half an hour just to reach the family sign. It read "Donovan Residence." The next hour would be spent trying to get to the mailbox. I finally reached the house and I was shocked to open the door and see who was just about to leave. • 5. Controversy: Surveillance Surveillance Essay Some might say that surveillance is an arbitrary invasion of privacy and others might mention that it is ВЁbig brotherВЁ watching over you with your best interest at hand. The controversial issues that provoked controversy, is whether it is justifiable or not justifiable for people in positions of authority to conduct surveillance of individuals. A textbook definition of surveillance is the continuous observation of a place, person, group, or ongoing activity to gather information. Overall, surveillance of the data and civilians phones can be favorable to their security and their community. One reasons why monitoring an adolescent's phone can be beneficial is it can stop suicide attempts as well as fatal actions. Another reason...show more content... As the author explains how the Long Beach police uses cameras statewide, the author states, "McDonnell has set up a system to tap into hundreds of privately owned cameras that are part of the city's streetscape. The new program synchronizes law enforcement data with real–time video feeds from parks, beaches, business corridors and even some retail centers," (Source 2). In other words, Long Beach has installed cameras to record day and night throughout the city for the safety of the community. The security system will show live feed of the community recording and storing data, which can be accessed later to review any suspicious crime. For example, if an attack happened and no one was caught, police have the technology to review the crime scene and track the suspects afterward. Additionally, The Los Angeles Times credited journalist, Richard Winton disclosed, "The cameras are connected to a city operations center with computer terminals that can access an array of databases from the Justice Department, Department of Motor Vehicles and other agencies, allowing staff to chase down the slimmest of clues, such as a partial license plate in a bank robbery getaway," (Source 2). • 6. Public Controversy: Case Study ARGUMENT To appeal the District Court's ruling that Williams has sufficient access to media, he needs to show there was not a public controversy in addition to showing this Court his nature and extent of involvement in the particular controversy. Gertz v. Robert Welch, Inc., 418 U.S. 323, 352 (1974). The following factors need to be found for there to be a public controversy: a real dispute that affects the general public; the dispute has to receive public attention because of the possible effects; and the court must be able to separate the controversy from the defamatory article in question. Thomas M. Cooley Law Sch. v. Kurzon Strauss, LLP, 759 F.3d 522, 530 (6th Cir. 2014). The court has to examine the individual's participation through a series...show more content... THERE IS NOT A PUBLIC CONTROVERSY BECAUSE WILLIAMS IS BEING DEFAMED FOR PRIVATE ACTIONS, NOT ACTIONS THAT AFFECT THE GENERAL PUBLIC. This is not a public controversy because the defamatory article does not meet the following factors. A public controversy must be: a real dispute that affects the general public; the dispute must receive public attention because of the possible effects; and the court must be able to separate the controversy from the defamatory article in question. Cooley, 759 F.3d 522, 530 (6th Cir. 2014). To show a public controversy, there needs to be a preexisting controversy that affected the general public. In Armstrong v. Shirvell, the Court concluded that Shirvell could not reconstruct Armstrong's private conduct into a public controversy simply by alleging that Armstrong "promoted" the gay lifestyle. 596 F. App'x 433, 446 (6th Cir. 2015). The Court found this was not a public controversy based on the reasoning from World Wide Ass'n of Specialty Programs v. Pure, Inc., 450 F.3d 1132, 1137 (10th Cir. 2006). The defamatory remarks were based solely on the plaintiff's character and lifestyle choices rather than a larger public controversy covered in the media. Armstrong, 596 F. • 7. The Zoo Controversy Essay Everybody's been to the zoo; they've either enjoyed a dolphin show, or fed the penguins. Zoos have been a part of American culture for centuries. At first, a zoo could be seen as nothing more than a jail cell for animals, but today, zoos are being completely transformed. What used to be confined cages are now being revolutionized into acres of land for different species to reside in. The opponents of zoos feel that they are inhumane and harmful to animals. However, zoos are beneficial for several different reasons, including, animal conservation and captive breeding, scientific studies, healthcare, and education. Daniel Martin, writer for mailonline.com, wrote an article about Angela Smith who works as a Labor's Charities Minister....show more content... Currently, animals in zoos are kept in well–clean, vast areas of land where they are free to roam around in a habitat where they feel comfortable. According to a TIME Magazine article, The San Diego Zoo spent 3.5 million dollars to construct a mock forest for five bears (Gibbs). The exhibit includes trees, a waterfall, and even an electronic honey dispenser. According to the article, "[w]hen the lush exhibit opened this summer, zoogoers loved it, and so did the bears. They shredded the trees and rolled in the sod," (Gibbs). Instead of the small cages and foul odors that most people associate with zoos, many zoos spend a large sum of their budget on keeping their facilities pristine. Animal habitats are now bigger than ever, and more importantly, cleaned multiple times a day, along with the animals' regular feedings. This further proves that zoos have made drastic improvements over the introductory zoos most people associate with. Contrary to what Smith believes, zoos are actually very beneficial for animals, one of the main reasons being conservation of species in zoos. Since their beginning in Europe in the mid–19th century, zoos have improved drastically; back then, zoos were merely for entertainment, where as now zoo owners are more aware and concerned with the welfare of their animals (Masci). With the endangered species list rising every year, it is imperative that scientists remain conscious of the number of Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Today, caricatures have changed, and I have noticed it have made a change in childrenВґs mind. To instance, language is rather different, and the way they show the things to the children. Besides, funny pictures have started to speak about topics that they did not used to do, and children express themselves different. Also, kids are more involved in social media, and it makes them feels obsessed or to be looking forward to having the new trendy in technology. For example for the Journalists, The website BuzzFeed dismissed one of its writers on Friday after finding 41 instances of "sentences or phrases copied word for word from other sites" among the 500 stories he had written, said the site's editor in chief, Ben Smith. Controversy Essay Benefits Controversy exists over whether people adhere to this believe that there are some benefits associated with relaxing through playing sports in comparison with watching films or reading books. In my vantage point, strenuous physical activity help everyone has a peaceful rest and relaxing in that not only do physical activities make peace of mind and away from hustle and bustle busy life in modern society, but also these activities improve their social activities. The first aspect to point out is that physical activities have positive influence on peoples' personal life. Moreover, doing these activities help them take a break from hectic life and unwind by playing their favorite sports. Additionally, playing sports is a good source of escapism. In simple term, people can take their mind off all collywobbles and tensions which are, nowadays, integral part of a normal daily life. But, people are also saying that he's no longer under the protection of the volunteers. That he's just like how all the people were before the volunteers' arrival, back during the great wars. He's become wicked." "You don't actually believe that, do you?" Cassidy incredulously asked. "And, you, Vera, do you believe such rubbish, too?" "He has always been weird, Cass, you know that," Vera responded. Cassidy interrogated further having sounded a bit anxious. "What do you plan to do?" "You know that statue out in front of the town hall?" Inez asked, but then he didn't wait at all for Cassidy to respond. "The one dedicated to the volunteers that depicts a bunch of people and children sowing the seeds of the new world's resurgence after the great wars." "Yeah, I'm familiar with it," answered Cassidy. • 12. Water Controversy Is Brunei's water cleaner than the water of Citarum River, the world's dirtiest river in Indonesia? It sure is but that does not mean we should ignore the fact that it is polluted. Dirty water has also contributed to global warming; a problem the whole world is trying to reduce. Floating garbage on the water is a sight nobody wants to see and no aquatic animals would want to live or not be able to live in dirty water which could reduce tourists coming to the country which could affect the country's economy and could reduce the country's fish resources. The rivers are important sources of water and food for any country. Including Brunei, a country so small it could not afford to lose these important sources. • 13. The Vaccine Controversy Essay examples The Vaccine Controversy Janira Sanchez Intro to Biology Professor Martin July 22, 2010 The Vaccine Controversy The vaccine controversy is the dispute over the morality, ethics, effectiveness, and /or safety of vaccinations. The medical and scientific evidence is that the benefits of preventing suffering and death from infectious diseases outweigh rare adverse effects of immunization. Since vaccination began in the late 18th century, opponents have claimed that vaccines do not work, that they are or may be dangerous, that individuals should rely on personal hygiene instead, or that mandatory vaccinations violate individual rights or religious principles. And since then, successful campaigns against vaccinations have...show more content... Other critics argue that immunity given by vaccines is only temporarily and requires boosters, whereas those who survive the disease become permanently immune. Lack of complete vaccine coverage increases the risk of disease for the entire population, including those who have been vaccinated, because it reduces herd immunity. For example, measles targets children between the ages of 9 and 12 months, and the short window between the disappearance of maternal antibody (before which the vaccine often fails to seroconvert) and natural infection means that vaccinated children frequently are still vulnerable. Herd immunity lessens this vulnerability, if all the children are vaccinated. Increasing herd immunity during an outbreak or threatened outbreak is the most widely accepted justification for mass vaccination. Mass vaccination also helps to increase coverage rapidly, thus obtaining herd immunity, when a new vaccine is introduced. Commonly used vaccines are a cost – effective and preventive way of promoting good health, compared to the cost of treatment of acute or chronic diseases. In the U.S. during the year 2001, routine childhood immunizations against seven diseases were estimated to save over $40 billion per year, overall social costs including $10 billion in direct health costs, and the societal benefit – cost ratio for these vaccinations was Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 14. Embryonic Stem Cell Controversy The controversy over stem cell research's use in the medical field is almost two decades old. So why the sudden intense return of fierce political debates over an old issue? It's because President Obama recently revoked the ban on stem cell research, as he believes it holds the potential to revolutionize the medical industry in the years to come. As USA Today quoted him saying in March, after he stopped restricting federal funding for stem cell research, "At this moment, the full promise of stem cell research remains unknown and should not be overstated. Scientists believe these tiny cells may have the potential to help us understand, and possibly cure, some of our most devastating diseases and conditions." The body's master cells are...show more content... ... the embryo would have been thrown away at an abortion clinic anyway. Now, given the choice of completely wasting the life or using it in order to further research, I'd pick research." (http:/ /www.juniorpolitics.com/) The fertility clinics, however, appear to be stem cell research advocates' favorite reference on how their work is ethical and humane in comparison. According to Michael Kinsley, Time Magazine reporter, "Embryonic stem–cell studies are controversial because they involve the destruction of human embryos. However, fertility clinics destroy far more human embryos than stem–cell research ever would, yet they are not controversial." (http://www.time.com) Pro–stem cell research scientists have found that citing fertility clinics as a similar field severely lessens the educated opposition against their work. This is because most pro–life advocates and mainstream Christians are advocates for the use of fertility clinics to help struggling couples get pregnant. They view fertility clinics as a place to help create life, not take it. In this, I speak from personal experience, as many of my Christian friends and relatives have been in and out of fertility clinics throughout the years, attempting to procreate a being to love, raise, and care for. In short, the debate boils down to the ancient debate of whether or not a fetus or human embryo is a life or not. Pro–life advocates say that human fetuses are absolutely, Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 15. Free Speech Controversy Essay Controversy of Free Speech Two–hundred and twenty–eight years ago, our founding fathers instituted a previously taboo idea of freedom of speech. Although today's society differs greatly from society in 1789, the main principles of freedom of speech have been warped into an oasis for discriminatory speech, shutting down others on their personal opinions and beliefs. For example, Native Americans have faced violent oppression for centuries, specifically regarding the Trail of Tears when they were pulled from their homes and settlements and forced to move, and the Dakota Pipeline project, when their homes were invaded by industry itself. Today, colleges and universities have established speech codes and other limits on speech that contradicts...show more content... According to Campus Hate Speech Codes from Santa Clara University, discrimination that is disallowed consists of: oral, written, graphic, or physical conduct against race, religion, color, origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, disability, or veteran status that will create a hostile environment for the victims. Speech codes are established to help protect minority members of an environment. College and university speech codes are not necessarily targeted to silence people of their opinions, but to stop unnecessary hate speech and harassment, bettering their campuses. While this pertains as a great idea, both reality and the Bill of Rights would beg to differ. No matter what rules we as a society establish, hate speech will always prevail. The truth is, no matter how many limits to free speech are enforced, people are still going to neglectfully speak against others. Santa Clara University's Campus Hate Speech Codes also states that encouraging artificial reality on campus will ultimately prevent students from learning effectively to tolerate diversity and discrimination. Basically, the attempt to shelter students from the reality outside a college campus damages their ability to tolerate others beliefs and mannerisms. • 16. The Controversy Of Racism And Racism Racism, often used as a trigger word in the media, has come to the forefront of society recently. It is nearly impossible to watch the news without seeing reports of police officers killing unarmed black citizens or hearing a debate about the appropriate choice in regards to allowing refugees into American borders. Though these prejudiced and bigoted ideas have existed since the rise of humanity, many people believe racism to be something found only in the shadowy dregs of modern society. Racial tension is the most strained it has been in decades. With racism regaining the spotlight, people openly express their hateful rhetoric. As a social worker, I would struggle most interacting with communities that spoke and acted openly against other races, such as members of white supremacist populations. Social Work Professionalism Remaining professional while listening to a client speak negatively against another race is difficult. It is important to remain professional, while holding one 's composure. For example, in one instance, I had to visit a client's home recently. Inside of the house was a wall–to–wall confederate flag dГ©cor expressing the individual 's opinion. As a professional worker, I was not able to discredit the client's opinion. I had to be self–aware and remind myself not to cause a power struggle. According to NASW Code of Ethics, service is a core value where social workers are supposed to assist the client in need and to aid the client with the problems he or Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 17. Controversial Art INVESTIGATE A RANGE OF ARTWORKS THAT HAVE SHOCKED OR CONFRONTED AN AUDIENCE As values have changed with modern and postmodern thought, artists have set to create more shocking and confronting work to distinguish themselves from the rest. Marcel Duchamp was perhaps the first to push the boundaries with his Fountain, a urinal in an art gallery, which was voted the most influential artwork of the 20th Century by 500 artists and forced his audience to think for themselves. Many artists have followed Duchamp, but have had to go to more and more extreme measures to get noticed, hence Chris Burden's Shoot and so on. The piece, which had been displayed at the Venice Biennale contemporary art fair in 1999, is comprised of a female fetus head affixed with rabbit eyes and grafted onto the body of a bird. The entire piece is afloat in a basin of formaldehyde. The museum had posted signs warning visitors about controversial artwork and has scheduled a symposium on Aug. 22 to discuss ethical issues surrounding the exhibit. Xiao defended his work from Beijing after a museum visitor in Switzerland who saw the piece filed a criminal complaint. "It's precisely because I respect all life that I did this," Xiao, who is known for his shocking artwork, told the Associated Press. "I want it to be displayed." The bird and fetus "died because there was something wrong with them," he said. "I thought putting them together like this was a way for them to have another life." Xiao has also said the piece is a statement against genetic manipulation and modifications. Cultural differences are quite obvious here. In Beijing this kind of artwork is completely acceptable, with political art, controversial, unlike the West where you see political satire daily in cartoons. Beijing's Imperial Museum even has a separate section for the Chinese public with embalmed bodies of grandparents and their grandchildren and the like. According to Xiao, he bought the human fetus head in 1999 for the equivalent of a few dozen US dollars from someone cleaning out a scientific exhibition hall. • 19. Controversies Surrounding Vaccine Essay example Immunization is the process by which a person or animal becomes protected against a disease. Even though it's "one of the greatest health development of the 20th century", the number of infants who aren't fully vaccinated are increasing gradually over the past years. This happened because of all the controversy surrounding vaccine. Despite the fact that it can prevent potentially life–threatening diseases, people are paying less attention to those infections because they are rarely seen nowadays. So people start to look at the vaccine and the possible side effects and now they fear that the vaccine itself might be more harmful than it is helpful. Although there are some objections for the use of vaccinations, I strongly support it for many...show more content... Additionally, it may increase a child's likelihood of developing multiple sclerosis, suffering intussusception and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. Even though vaccine can certainly cause adverse effects, the risks of not being vaccinated far outweighed the small risks associated with injection. For instance, the measles vaccine can cause a temporary reduction in platelets in 1 in 30,000 children, but 1 in 2,000 will die if they get measles itself. Vaccinationalso leaves a person more vulnerable to other diseases because his or her natural immune system is weak from never fighting off an infection. However, there is a price to pay with natural immunity. For example, a natural polio infection can cause permanent paralysis. Vaccination can help prevent the disease without having any after–complications. Opponents also believe that government shouldn't have the right to intervene in the health decisions parents make for their children. Since some people hold religious beliefs against immunization, forcing them to do so is violating the First Amendment which guarantees religious freedom. However, proponents stated that the public health is more important than an individual's views and that no one should have the right to risk it to satisfy his or her personal moral, philosophy, or religion. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, childhood vaccines are 90% to 99% effective in preventing diseases. Even if the Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 20. The Easter Controversy Essay The Easter Controversy Easter is the most important celebration for Christianity because it commemorates the Resurrection of Jesus Christ, a foundational notion upon which the faith is built. Accordingly, it is the principle feast and the high point of the ecclesiastical year, which has been an established tradition as old as Christianity. Easter has been universally observed since the middle of the second century. The original celebration generally consisted of a vigil with readings followed by a feast with the Eucharist. This was a time for rejoicing because the suffering, death, and resurrection of Jesus were seen as a saving unit. Christ's transition from death to resurrection, which...show more content... By the end of the second century, the majority of the Western churches had come to celebrate the Resurrection on the Sunday that followed the 14th day of the Jewish month Nisan. The Western Asiatic churches commemorated Jesus' death rather than His resurrection and observed it on the 14th day of Nisan, whether that day fell on a Sunday or not. Therefore, what became known as the Easter Controversy was not an argument over the day of Jesus' resurrection, but rather a disagreement over what day was most appropriate to commemorate it annually (Catholic Encyclopedia). The Easter Controversy is the name given to the drawn out dispute in the early Church over the exact date for the celebration of Easter. As previously mentioned, this disagreement originated between the West and East at about the middle of the second century. Basically, what was under concern was whether the Easter celebration must be observed on a Sunday or if it should be celebrated on the 14th day of Nisan, regardless of the day on which this date may fall. This was the day on which the Jews celebrated Passover, which is why the Eastern churches like in Asia felt that since the two festivals were related, it was only fitting to celebrate Easter on that same day. Although these followers claimed to have received this practice from certain Apostles, specifically John and Philip, they were Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 21. Controversy Argumentative Analysis So often in today's media can stories wrapped in "controversy" be found plastered on screens and print. These stories can range from legitimate issues such as personal rights to non–issues of people losing their minds over a coffee cup, or so is reported. The fact of the matter is that people will find just about any reason to be upset regardless of whether or not the concern is even minutely worth considering and the groups and anti–groups surrounding the topic will snowball out of control in size, misinformation, and irrationality. A common and unfortunate mode of thinking found today is the idea of feelings trumping objective analysis and accurate information. So often will people fling themselves into what they perceive as a truly important argument without considering how little impact it may actually have nor whether or not the topic at hand is anything to be riled up about in the first place. As a result, non–problems are shrouded in unnecessary controversy, often explosively. Perhaps the most pathetic example of misguided rage was the 2015 Starbucks Christmas cup which sported a minimalistic red design that left out references to Christmas in an effort to be more inclusive. This ridiculous outrage is a prime example of how poorly thought out arguments often are and how...show more content... Too often will otherwise perfectly rational people disregard proper analysis and consideration for how something makes them feel. Something insignificant that someone dislikes could send them into a flurry with that kind of logic, and it is that kind of logic that causes controversy to arise unnecessarily. If people just took some time to properly analyze issues and assessed its worth as something to argue over, then society would enjoy much less polarization and have more time to focus on legitimate Get more content on HelpWriting.net
