College and university speech codes are not necessarily targeted to silence people of their opinions,

Racism, often used as a trigger word in the media, has come to the forefront of society recently. It
is nearly impossible to watch the news without seeing reports of police officers killing unarmed
black citizens or hearing a debate about the appropriate choice in regards to allowing refugees into
American borders. Though these prejudiced and bigoted ideas have existed since the rise of
humanity, many people believe racism to be something found only in the shadowy dregs of modern

Easter is the most important celebration for Christianity because it commemorates the Resurrection
of Jesus Christ, a foundational notion upon which the faith is built. Accordingly, it is the principle
feast and the high point of the ecclesiastical year, which has been an established tradition as old as

By the end of the second century, the majority of the Western churches had come to celebrate the
Resurrection on the Sunday that followed the 14th day of the Jewish month Nisan. The Western
Asiatic churches commemorated Jesus' death rather than His resurrection and observed it on the
14th day of Nisan, whether that day fell on a Sunday or not. Therefore, what became known as the
Easter Controversy was not an argument over the day of Jesus' resurrection, but rather a
disagreement over what day was most appropriate to commemorate it annually (Catholic

The Easter Controversy is the name given to the drawn out dispute in the early Church over the
exact date for the celebration of Easter. As previously mentioned, this disagreement originated
between the West and East at about the middle of the second century. Basically, what was under
concern was whether the Easter celebration must be observed on a Sunday or if it should be
celebrated on the 14th day of Nisan, regardless of the day on which this date may fall. This was
the day on which the Jews celebrated Passover, which is why the Eastern churches like in Asia felt
that since the two festivals were related, it was only fitting to celebrate Easter on that same day.

So often in today's media can stories wrapped in "controversy" be found plastered on screens and
print. These stories can range from legitimate issues such as personal rights to non–issues of people
losing their minds over a coffee cup, or so is reported. The fact of the matter is that people will find
just about any reason to be upset regardless of whether or not the concern is even minutely worth
considering and the groups and anti–groups surrounding the topic will snowball out of control in
size, misinformation, and irrationality. A common and unfortunate mode of thinking found today is
the idea of feelings trumping objective analysis and accurate information. So often will people fling
themselves into what they perceive as a truly important argument without considering how little
impact it may actually have nor whether or not the topic at hand is anything to be riled up about in
the first place. As a result, non–problems are shrouded in unnecessary controversy, often explosively.
Perhaps the most pathetic example of misguided rage was the 2015 Starbucks Christmas cup which
sported a minimalistic red design that left out references to Christmas in an effort to be more

Too often will otherwise perfectly rational people disregard proper analysis and consideration for
how something makes them feel. This may perhaps sound reasonable, but it ignores the simple fact
that feelings regarding issues taken at face value are misguided at best. Something insignificant that
someone dislikes could send them into a flurry with that kind of logic, and it is that kind of logic
that causes controversy to arise unnecessarily. If people just took some time to properly analyze
issues and assessed its worth as something to argue over, then society would enjoy much less
polarization and have more time to focus on legitimate
