Oxherding Tale Analysis
Conservatism and Progressivism within Charles Johnson's Oxherding Tale
Having ideals that contradict a way of thinking, will make it strenuous to achieve satisfaction. In his
novel, Oxherding Tale, Charles Johnson exemplifies his unique perspective on the ambiguity of
freedom through the main character, Andrew Hawkins. For the duration of his journey, Hawkins
gains a sense of freedom, but not in the way he imagines it to be. Aida Ahmed Hussen's article,
"'Manumission and Marriage?': Freedom, Family, and Identity in Charles Johnson's Oxherding
Tale," expresses Hawkins' clash between his conservative mindset and progressive ideals. Indeed,
Andrew abandons both, which on a larger scale, suggests that Andrew must go against his values in
order...show more content...
Although Andrew is against the status quo that suppresses African Americans, is pro–change, and
seeks autonomy, he must resist these urges; it is physically impossible to escape from social
constructs and to achieve freedom in a society that subjects the entirety of his race. Hawkins
figures it is more efficient to use what he has already been given, in this case, his pale skin. He
may not be able to attain freedom as a black male, but there's still a chance (though many risks are
at stake) if Hawkins has the ability to sway white people into believing that he is one of them.
Hawkins for much of his life seeks change (where one's racial background does not determine
treatment), yet eventually runs away from change. Using his mixed blood to his advantage,
Hawkins identifies himself under the alias, William Harris, a man who seemingly belongs to the
white race. Once settled in his new and improved persona, Harris marries a white woman named
Peggy and experiences what seems to be a cliche children's storybook ending: "On April 23, 1861,
Wife (Peggy) bore a girl – six pounds, six ounces... Fruity and I turned to the business of
rebuilding, with out daughter Anna (all is conserved; all) the world. This is my tale" (Johnson
176). This "happily ever after" is indeed Hawkins' achievement of freedom, as he, like many
fictional works, starts a family and achieves a tranquil life. Hawkins never leaves a legacy,
pleases his father, nor does he ever prove that his identity is not prescribed by his racial
background. Hawkins instead, severs ties with his father and liberates himself from the inferior
position within the social constructs of race, by blending in as a superior who in turn, carries a

Foxbridge: A Short Story
We're all that's left. Outside the spotless white walls that engulf the city nothing roams free in the
rubble of what used to be the United States of America. The two hundred and twelve of us were
pulled into safety before the war got out of hand. This is what we have been told ever since we
woke up in Foxbridge. We are the first generation.
"Citizens of Foxbridge, report to the courtyard at eight o'clock" said the intercom as it boomed
through all the houses and streets of Foxbridge.
Simultaneously all the lights in town flipped on as the citizens began to prepare for another day in
paradise. John Hunter slipped on his spotless black boots, grabbed his coat of the hook next to the
door, and stepped out into the cool morning breeze. Dew...show more content...
"We are safe here in Foxbridge, we were pulled into safety before the war got out of hand. There is
nothing left outside those walls, all that's left is the rubbish of what used to be the United States. We
are all that's left and we're all thankful for that."
"Foxbridge is safe. The FGC have ingrained that into your mind, but don't you ever wonder what's
outside the wall? They have never given you any proof that you are the last humans left. They
have never shown you what's outside the wall. Why did they choose you? Ever tried to think of
what you life was like before you woke up in here? Because I have, and I can't remember anything
about who I used to be. These laws have been made to keep us from finding the truth about the
FGC. They." Neveah picked up her skateboard and walked away towards the FGC.
Hunter turned around speechless and looked to the top of the light pole behind him. He saw the
small black camera peering down at him, he stared into it for a second and then headed back to the
Foxbridge Transportation Shop. The rest of the day went by slower than usual, Hunter found
himself repeating "Foxbridge is safe, Foxbridge is safe." At six o'clock a voice on the intercom

Pros And Cons Of Enrollment In Oxbridge
according to the passage we know that, many issues about enrollment in Oxbridge and oxford
university that emerged, this problem begins with the idea that someone elitist such as oxford
would never be the place for someone like you. This idea is fed to students from public schools, and
ultimately initiates the pros and cons. It causes students from private schools to feel that they are
entitled to a place in the university. The lammy–highlighted issues can be traced to the education
system and governmental mistakes. That those from low–income backrounds are not being given
the chance to reach top university by using pure selection based on achievement. So students who

Crossing The Border Essay
Many people are unaware of the heartbreak that takes place on our border in the south. Between the
media and uneducated Americans, the immigration at the border needs to be addressed or our
country will be overrun with illegals according to the news and social media. The true
heart–breaking story cannot be told or our country would not stand for this inhuman behavior. There
are many reasons for crossing the border illegally. For instance, women could be fleeing for their
life, looking for freedom, wanting the chance to raise their family without the fear of abuse, or just
because someone told them their life would be better if they could just get into the United States.
Regardless the reason, everyone should at least be asked why they are willing to risk their life and
their families lives to live in the United States?
The Border Patrol may ask the immigrants about why they crossed the border illegally or they may
not ask. Truthfully, what do the Border Patrol do after they ask? Often, we believe, the job is being
taken care of regarding immigration and who could be cruel to women and children. However, these
border patrol agencies are groomed to hunt immigrants like animals and criminals. In the article,
"Looking Beyond the Wall," author Robert Neustadt depicts a conversation with a border control
agent, "I'm a junior agent, so I don't get to go out to play as much. That's what we call going out on
Patrol, explains Wilson" (Neustadt, 2013, p.623). Leaving their home to

Orange Is The New Black Essay
Orange is the new black – Introduction to popular culture Amber Miller 15905232
Orange Is the New Black debuted in early 2013 and has since been a highly favoured television title
on the online streaming service, Netflix. Orange Is the New Black features a mainly female cast,
creating a female centred comedy drama, within the cast there is a large amount of diversity, causing
many gender stereotypes and genre conventions to be broken. Orange Is the New Black has
characters that represent many different spectrums of sexual orientations and identities, creating a
change in gender expectations. This essay will focus on episode thirteen of season one, where
characters Sophia Burset and Big Boo have a large influence over the audience. These characters are
unique as they break the gender expectations for LGBT and African American women that have
controlled similar characters for many years.
Orange Is the New Black has started to redefine various gender and sexuality expectations that have
been concreted in to media for many years. Women are not always portrayed genuinely in
mainstream media, many television shows place women on a sexualized pedestal, where they are
subject to male gaze due to hegemonic femininity representation. Diane Ponterotto (2016) describes
how male gaze can affect media, and social notions, "Through the male gaze, the female body
becomes territory, a valuable resource to be acquired," (p. 147.) Ponterotto continues, mentioning
that many women have

My Experience In English Writing
English is a core concept in the Untied States and other countries that has allowed inviduals to
advance their knowledge. Not only does English provide an advancement in knowlege, but has
created a way for individuals to share their thoughts and feelings through writing. Which is why
English is one of the four subjects that is required to be taught in almost every school district in
America including mine. I began taking English from a young age which allowed me to take
advanced placement English IV my senior year at Tupelo High School. Advanced Placement English
IV allowed me to further my education in writing, which in return allowed me to overcome
obstacles, low points and discover strengths I never knew I had. Like any other thing in life there
are always obstacles individuals face everyday, for me in my English IV class writing was
something that was very challenging. The first challenge writing presented to me was trying to
organize all of my thoughts, so that it made sense. The first essay I ever wrote in my English class
was a journal entry about a memorable experience, so with that being said I decided I would write
about the experience I had while hunting with my Dad. The hunting experience with my dad had
many different parts, and one of my biggest challenges I had was organizing my thoughts, so that it
flowed correctly. Since I was telling a story within my journal I realized that I was jumping around
more then I should have and this became a problem. I learned

The Oxbridge Model Analysis
From the standpoint of the collegial culture perspective, the purpose of higher education is the
"generation, interpretation, and dissemination of knowledge" (Schuh, Jones, Harper, &Associates,
2011, p.274). Some argue that there is nothing more important than high quality research, scholarship
and teaching; however, with the health of theories and concepts that are currently practiced, student
affairs professionals and academic leaders must rely on a range of approaches to achieve educational
goals. It is known that these higher education institutions lean to psychology for counseling theories,
sociology for group behavior, and anthropology for knowledge of different cultures (Schu et al.,
2011). Two models whom cultures heavily influenced the development ofhigher education in the

p.274). This model changes the structure of college campuses by equipping students with residence
halls, advisement, and learning centers. This new thirteenth–century model provided a safe haven
for students during the time of rioting between town and gown (Schuh et al., 2011). The main focus
before this model was only the "life of the mind," which was defined as educating only the mind of
the student to learn their lesson; instead of teaching students about social and moral development.
Compared to today's system in higher education, this historical model has stood the test of time.
Higher education institutions are perfecting their residence halls or mentoring classrooms to
empower the whole student. Colleges and universities are developing numerous extra–curricular
activities for students that help foster their character and emotional development. According to
Nicotra and Patel (2016) "higher education intuitions around the world have focused on embedding
graduate outcomes that characterized the idea of educating and developing a good citizen and not
just another student"

"Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening" a Review
English 102

Poetry Thesis and Outline
While reviewing "Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening", it should be noted that the key is the
rhythm of the language. The first, second, and fourth sentence rime while the third sentence of each
rimes with the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd sentence of the next stanza. In relation with the cryptic language
draws the question, there is a more sinister back drop of loneliness and depression in this poem
much deeper than the level of nature orated by the Narator. I. First Stanza
A. Frost opens with describing who's woods we are viewing
1. Does it matter who's woods
B. No one is...show more content...
Frost further points out that the stretch of woods being viewed is very rural. This is made possible
by the reference to the location between the woods and frozen lake. In closing the final sentence of
the second stanza Frost reiterates the fact that this occurs on "the darkest evening of the year" stating
the darkness of the mood.
In the following stanza Frost returns to the horse, which "gives his harness bells a shake". This is
the first of only two sounds listed in the entire poem. Sounds might normally be associated with a
person in a lighter more jovial mood. Frost uses the lack of sound to put the narrator into what
appears to be a deep process of thought. As the poem moves further allon it is clear that Frost is not
thinking of other sounds or even the feelings which would be associated with this type of event.
There is no mention of the temperature only the implication of the snow falling, and the frozen lake.
Yet the sounds are slightly present, similar to an athlete who is preparing for the event. Frost is
quiet, internalizing his thoughts, focusing on the task at hand, and not sensing the other areas of life
in the world around him.
In the fourth and final stanza Frost uses the riming of all four sentences to draw the reader into the
climax of the poem, "the woods are lovely dark and deep/ But I have promises to keep/ and miles to
go before I sleep/ and miles to go before I sleep". This grouping leads the reader to feel that

My primary minor is medicine as I plan to go to medical school after college. The pull–factor of
medicine is, of course saving people's lives, but also discovering and defeating the microscopic
elements that can consume us alive. The mere ability of these invisible particles to completely
destroy us is truly humbling. That is why the study and practice of medicine is a dignifying and
self–driven cause. Psychology is another minor I have chosen to apply for. I believe that the brain
is the most powerful organ of the body, which I had begun to appreciate after participating in a
neuro–based summer camp in Texas. In this program, I not only learned the anatomy and
physiology of the brain, but also the effects the brain has other parts of the body. Without the brain,
we wouldn't be able to perform an act as simple as swallowing. But the most interesting aspect of
the brain is its cognitive abilities. The endless variability of the brain's cognition makes the study of
neurology a bottomless water glass for my unquenchable thirst for knowledge. Finally, as England is

My First Experience At Orientation
My first experience at orientation was Dean Groves' stately voice in Old Cabell Hall giving an
unforgettable speech about the future role of the class of 2019. The calmness and excitement he
brought to the incoming class while he spoke was indescribable. He made me and everyone else
feel as though we had a purpose and could make UVA a better place over our time here. When I
asked my friends at other schools in Virginia what they thought about their Dean of Students, they
could not even recall the dean's name let alone his or her influence on the students. The students
of UVA are thankful to Dean Groves for the effort he puts in to connect with us and for the
influence he has on our experience here. There is obviously a large difference between Dean
Groves and the faculty at other schools, so what is it about his personality that makes him so
popular with the student body and community in Charlottesville? I used the Big 5 model of
personality to examine Dean Groves. This test is made up of five factors – extraversion,
neuroticism, agreeableness, conscientiousness, and openness. Groves agreed to take the NEO–IPIP,
which is a free, online version of the Big 5 test. A colleague of his also agreed to take the test as if
she was he. The purpose of the colleague taking the test was to attempt to control any self–report
bias that could have occurred on Groves' own results. They both completed the shorter version of the
test, which is composed of 150 questions. Groves and the

Personal Statement For Artificial Intelligence
Andrew Ng, former Baidu Chief Scientist and Coursera co–founder, terms Artificial Intelligence (AI)
as the "new electricity" – it is the highest–impact technology that has the potential to alter the pace of
scientific progress and enhance human life. Using machine learning and artificial intelligence for
solving social issues can be fulfilling both emotionally and financially. This epiphany struck me
when I came across AI becoming a catalyst for revolutionizing healthcare. Memorial Sloan Kettering

(CIS) from the University of Pennsylvania (Penn) is the logical next step.
As an avid quizzer, I was fascinated when IBM Watson beat two of Jeopardy's all–time greats Brad
Rutter and Ken Jennings. Consequently, I realized that the "Man vs Machine" could be transformed
into a "Machine for man" paradigm whereby machine learning augments human intelligence in
solving practical issues. I developed a keen interest in Math, Physics and Computer Science at the
Higher Secondary level (Grades XI and XII) where I graduated with a 99th percentile score
nationally (among 930,000 candidates).
I specialized in Computer Science in the undergraduate program at the College of Engineering, Anna

My experience throughout English 101 Essay
My Experience throughout English 101
As writers, many students write to the expectations of their professors and not to their fullest
potential. Throughout English 101 I had been writing only to please my professor or to fill the basic
requirement to pass English. I always felt that my writing ability was never enough for my
professors throughout the previous years. They always wanted clear and concise essays, which for
some reason was unreachable by me. However, starting college and taking English 101 helped me
with my weaknesses and changed my technique of writing essays. My experience in English 101
taught me to write to my fullest potential and to write what I felt; rather then writing what was
required.

Also, by revising my essays I felt that I had the chance of writing with a broader sense.
Another weakness that I had coming into English 101 was my way of reading. I remember
having to read an essay or book 3 or 4 times before I could ever sit down and write about it. I was
looking and at the words all wrong. However, my professor introduced a technique of reading
critically. "A critical analysis, on the other hand, takes a viewpoint and attempts to its validity;"
(Trimble, 95) In Trimble's quote he is trying say that a critical analysis helps a reader understand
what the author is really trying to point out. This was the same approach that was taught to me by
my professor. This type of analysis helped me understand better what the author was trying to
convey and it also helped me explain it better in my essays.
Additionally, another weakness that I had when coming into English 101 was that I was a selfish
writer. Like Trimble said, "His natural tendency as a writer is to think primarily of himself– hence to
write primarily for himself." (Trimble, 4) I was a writer who only cared about impressing one
type of audience my professor and not writing to prove a point or expand my knowledge to several
other audiences. However, after writing several unsatisfying essays I had come to realize that my
style of writing was too narrow and boring. In this realization of writing I discovered that what
matters the most is pleasing your audience (many not one), and

Oxygen
Oxygen, symbol O, colorless, odorless, tasteless, slightly magnetic gaseous element. On earth,
oxygen is more abundant than any other element.
Oxygen was discovered in 1774 by the British chemist Joseph Priestley and, independently, by the
Swedish chemist Carl Wilhelm Scheele; it was shown to be an elemental gas by the French chemist
Antoine Laurent Lavoisier in his classic experiments on combustion.
Large amounts of oxygen are used in high–temperature welding torches, in which a mixture of

weight of the oceans and, as a constituent of most rocks and minerals,
46.7 percent by weight of the solid crust of the earth. Oxygen comprises 60 percent of the human
body. It is a constituent of all living tissues; almost all plants and animals, including all humans,
require oxygen, in the free or combined state, to maintain life.3
Three structural forms of oxygen are known: ordinary oxygen, containing two atoms per molecule,
formula O2; ozone, containing three atoms per molecule, formula O3; and a pale blue, nonmagnetic
form, O4, containing four atoms per molecule, which readily breaks down into ordinary oxygen.
Three stable isotopes of oxygen are known; oxygen–16 (atomic mass 16) is the most abundant. It

the 1960s.
Oxygen is prepared in the laboratory from salts such as potassium chlorate, barium peroxide, and

Before the Suffragettes, women were not able to vote and the move for women to have the right to

also made the argument that if women were made responsible for sitting on school boards and

the spaghetti strands whereas the dependent variable would be the number of pennies being added in
the cup. The things that are held constant is the same cup, the same type of pennies, the type of
spaghetti that is being used in this experiment, the placement of where the spaghettis should be
placed, and the initial setup meaning the same table. First we started with one strand of spaghetti,
and placed the cup with the string in the center of the spaghetti, and with that we constantly added
pennies into the cup until the spaghetti strands breaks. We continued with this process by adding
another strand each time.Everyone would not get the same exact results, but everyone should have
gotten roughly the same pattern of proportionality. Not all of our bridges were constructed in the
same manner, so our results would differ. The design of the bridge can largely affect the outcome of
the data in this particular lab.Three important vocabulary words pertinent to this experiment are
independent variable, dependent variable, and controlled variable. Then let me know these three
words is very important for this lab. Then the design of the bridge was different in each group.Maybe

Oxbridge Essay

  • 1. Oxherding Tale Analysis Conservatism and Progressivism within Charles Johnson's Oxherding Tale Having ideals that contradict a way of thinking, will make it strenuous to achieve satisfaction. In his novel, Oxherding Tale, Charles Johnson exemplifies his unique perspective on the ambiguity of freedom through the main character, Andrew Hawkins. For the duration of his journey, Hawkins gains a sense of freedom, but not in the way he imagines it to be. Aida Ahmed Hussen's article, "'Manumission and Marriage?': Freedom, Family, and Identity in Charles Johnson's Oxherding Tale," expresses Hawkins' clash between his conservative mindset and progressive ideals. Indeed, Andrew abandons both, which on a larger scale, suggests that Andrew must go against his values in order...show more content... Although Andrew is against the status quo that suppresses African Americans, is pro–change, and seeks autonomy, he must resist these urges; it is physically impossible to escape from social constructs and to achieve freedom in a society that subjects the entirety of his race. Hawkins figures it is more efficient to use what he has already been given, in this case, his pale skin. He may not be able to attain freedom as a black male, but there's still a chance (though many risks are at stake) if Hawkins has the ability to sway white people into believing that he is one of them. Hawkins for much of his life seeks change (where one's racial background does not determine treatment), yet eventually runs away from change. Using his mixed blood to his advantage, Hawkins identifies himself under the alias, William Harris, a man who seemingly belongs to the white race. Once settled in his new and improved persona, Harris marries a white woman named Peggy and experiences what seems to be a cliche children's storybook ending: "On April 23, 1861, Wife (Peggy) bore a girl – six pounds, six ounces... Fruity and I turned to the business of rebuilding, with out daughter Anna (all is conserved; all) the world. This is my tale" (Johnson 176). This "happily ever after" is indeed Hawkins' achievement of freedom, as he, like many fictional works, starts a family and achieves a tranquil life. Hawkins never leaves a legacy, pleases his father, nor does he ever prove that his identity is not prescribed by his racial background. Hawkins instead, severs ties with his father and liberates himself from the inferior position within the social constructs of race, by blending in as a superior who in turn, carries a prescribed Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. Foxbridge: A Short Story We're all that's left. Outside the spotless white walls that engulf the city nothing roams free in the rubble of what used to be the United States of America. The two hundred and twelve of us were pulled into safety before the war got out of hand. This is what we have been told ever since we woke up in Foxbridge. We are the first generation. "Citizens of Foxbridge, report to the courtyard at eight o'clock" said the intercom as it boomed through all the houses and streets of Foxbridge. Simultaneously all the lights in town flipped on as the citizens began to prepare for another day in paradise. John Hunter slipped on his spotless black boots, grabbed his coat of the hook next to the door, and stepped out into the cool morning breeze. Dew...show more content... "We are safe here in Foxbridge, we were pulled into safety before the war got out of hand. There is nothing left outside those walls, all that's left is the rubbish of what used to be the United States. We are all that's left and we're all thankful for that." "Foxbridge is safe. The FGC have ingrained that into your mind, but don't you ever wonder what's outside the wall? They have never given you any proof that you are the last humans left. They have never shown you what's outside the wall. Why did they choose you? Ever tried to think of what you life was like before you woke up in here? Because I have, and I can't remember anything about who I used to be. These laws have been made to keep us from finding the truth about the FGC. They." Neveah picked up her skateboard and walked away towards the FGC. Hunter turned around speechless and looked to the top of the light pole behind him. He saw the small black camera peering down at him, he stared into it for a second and then headed back to the Foxbridge Transportation Shop. The rest of the day went by slower than usual, Hunter found himself repeating "Foxbridge is safe, Foxbridge is safe." At six o'clock a voice on the intercom boomed through the town saying, "Citizens of Foxbridge, you may return to your homes at this time. And remember Foxbridge is Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. Pros And Cons Of Enrollment In Oxbridge according to the passage we know that, many issues about enrollment in Oxbridge and oxford university that emerged, this problem begins with the idea that someone elitist such as oxford would never be the place for someone like you. This idea is fed to students from public schools, and ultimately initiates the pros and cons. It causes students from private schools to feel that they are entitled to a place in the university. The lammy–highlighted issues can be traced to the education system and governmental mistakes. That those from low–income backrounds are not being given the chance to reach top university by using pure selection based on achievement. So students who come from low–income feel inappropriate to aplaid to the university. This Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. Crossing The Border Essay Many people are unaware of the heartbreak that takes place on our border in the south. Between the media and uneducated Americans, the immigration at the border needs to be addressed or our country will be overrun with illegals according to the news and social media. The true heart–breaking story cannot be told or our country would not stand for this inhuman behavior. There are many reasons for crossing the border illegally. For instance, women could be fleeing for their life, looking for freedom, wanting the chance to raise their family without the fear of abuse, or just because someone told them their life would be better if they could just get into the United States. Regardless the reason, everyone should at least be asked why they are willing to risk their life and their families lives to live in the United States? The Border Patrol may ask the immigrants about why they crossed the border illegally or they may not ask. Truthfully, what do the Border Patrol do after they ask? Often, we believe, the job is being taken care of regarding immigration and who could be cruel to women and children. However, these border patrol agencies are groomed to hunt immigrants like animals and criminals. In the article, "Looking Beyond the Wall," author Robert Neustadt depicts a conversation with a border control agent, "I'm a junior agent, so I don't get to go out to play as much. That's what we call going out on Patrol, explains Wilson" (Neustadt, 2013, p.623). Leaving their home to Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 5. Orange Is The New Black Essay Orange is the new black – Introduction to popular culture Amber Miller 15905232 Orange Is the New Black debuted in early 2013 and has since been a highly favoured television title on the online streaming service, Netflix. Orange Is the New Black features a mainly female cast, creating a female centred comedy drama, within the cast there is a large amount of diversity, causing many gender stereotypes and genre conventions to be broken. Orange Is the New Black has characters that represent many different spectrums of sexual orientations and identities, creating a change in gender expectations. This essay will focus on episode thirteen of season one, where characters Sophia Burset and Big Boo have a large influence over the audience. These characters are unique as they break the gender expectations for LGBT and African American women that have controlled similar characters for many years. Orange Is the New Black has started to redefine various gender and sexuality expectations that have been concreted in to media for many years. Women are not always portrayed genuinely in mainstream media, many television shows place women on a sexualized pedestal, where they are subject to male gaze due to hegemonic femininity representation. Diane Ponterotto (2016) describes how male gaze can affect media, and social notions, "Through the male gaze, the female body becomes territory, a valuable resource to be acquired," (p. 147.) Ponterotto continues, mentioning that many women have Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 6. My Experience In English Writing English is a core concept in the Untied States and other countries that has allowed inviduals to advance their knowledge. Not only does English provide an advancement in knowlege, but has created a way for individuals to share their thoughts and feelings through writing. Which is why English is one of the four subjects that is required to be taught in almost every school district in America including mine. I began taking English from a young age which allowed me to take advanced placement English IV my senior year at Tupelo High School. Advanced Placement English IV allowed me to further my education in writing, which in return allowed me to overcome obstacles, low points and discover strengths I never knew I had. Like any other thing in life there are always obstacles individuals face everyday, for me in my English IV class writing was something that was very challenging. The first challenge writing presented to me was trying to organize all of my thoughts, so that it made sense. The first essay I ever wrote in my English class was a journal entry about a memorable experience, so with that being said I decided I would write about the experience I had while hunting with my Dad. The hunting experience with my dad had many different parts, and one of my biggest challenges I had was organizing my thoughts, so that it flowed correctly. Since I was telling a story within my journal I realized that I was jumping around more then I should have and this became a problem. I learned Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 7. The Oxbridge Model Analysis From the standpoint of the collegial culture perspective, the purpose of higher education is the "generation, interpretation, and dissemination of knowledge" (Schuh, Jones, Harper, &Associates, 2011, p.274). Some argue that there is nothing more important than high quality research, scholarship and teaching; however, with the health of theories and concepts that are currently practiced, student affairs professionals and academic leaders must rely on a range of approaches to achieve educational goals. It is known that these higher education institutions lean to psychology for counseling theories, sociology for group behavior, and anthropology for knowledge of different cultures (Schu et al., 2011). Two models whom cultures heavily influenced the development ofhigher education in the ...show more content... p.274). This model changes the structure of college campuses by equipping students with residence halls, advisement, and learning centers. This new thirteenth–century model provided a safe haven for students during the time of rioting between town and gown (Schuh et al., 2011). The main focus before this model was only the "life of the mind," which was defined as educating only the mind of the student to learn their lesson; instead of teaching students about social and moral development. Compared to today's system in higher education, this historical model has stood the test of time. Higher education institutions are perfecting their residence halls or mentoring classrooms to empower the whole student. Colleges and universities are developing numerous extra–curricular activities for students that help foster their character and emotional development. According to Nicotra and Patel (2016) "higher education intuitions around the world have focused on embedding graduate outcomes that characterized the idea of educating and developing a good citizen and not just another student" Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 8. Engl. 102 Poetry Essay "Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening" a Review English 102 Liberty University 4/21/2014 Poetry Thesis and Outline While reviewing "Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening", it should be noted that the key is the rhythm of the language. The first, second, and fourth sentence rime while the third sentence of each rimes with the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd sentence of the next stanza. In relation with the cryptic language draws the question, there is a more sinister back drop of loneliness and depression in this poem much deeper than the level of nature orated by the Narator. I. First Stanza A. Frost opens with describing who's woods we are viewing 1. Does it matter who's woods B. No one is...show more content... Frost further points out that the stretch of woods being viewed is very rural. This is made possible by the reference to the location between the woods and frozen lake. In closing the final sentence of the second stanza Frost reiterates the fact that this occurs on "the darkest evening of the year" stating the darkness of the mood. In the following stanza Frost returns to the horse, which "gives his harness bells a shake". This is the first of only two sounds listed in the entire poem. Sounds might normally be associated with a person in a lighter more jovial mood. Frost uses the lack of sound to put the narrator into what appears to be a deep process of thought. As the poem moves further allon it is clear that Frost is not thinking of other sounds or even the feelings which would be associated with this type of event. There is no mention of the temperature only the implication of the snow falling, and the frozen lake. Yet the sounds are slightly present, similar to an athlete who is preparing for the event. Frost is quiet, internalizing his thoughts, focusing on the task at hand, and not sensing the other areas of life in the world around him. In the fourth and final stanza Frost uses the riming of all four sentences to draw the reader into the climax of the poem, "the woods are lovely dark and deep/ But I have promises to keep/ and miles to go before I sleep/ and miles to go before I sleep". This grouping leads the reader to feel that Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 9. Nabeeha Hasan Sugar Land Texas, USA Personal Statement I want to participate in the Oxbridge Summer Seminar because it's a new experience. I am a person that's all about new experiences. From sampling squid–ink dyed paella in Madrid to trying my hand at falconry in the deserts of the UAE to riding elephants in the jungles of Chiang Mai, I am always ready for the unconventional. Being a regular traveler and having lived in countries on opposite sides of the globe, I not only have experiences in these countries but interacting with the communities of these places has given me a perspective of different societies on various issues. I can contribute this variation of perspective, and the unique experiences from my travels to this program. My planned...show more content... My primary minor is medicine as I plan to go to medical school after college. The pull–factor of medicine is, of course saving people's lives, but also discovering and defeating the microscopic elements that can consume us alive. The mere ability of these invisible particles to completely destroy us is truly humbling. That is why the study and practice of medicine is a dignifying and self–driven cause. Psychology is another minor I have chosen to apply for. I believe that the brain is the most powerful organ of the body, which I had begun to appreciate after participating in a neuro–based summer camp in Texas. In this program, I not only learned the anatomy and physiology of the brain, but also the effects the brain has other parts of the body. Without the brain, we wouldn't be able to perform an act as simple as swallowing. But the most interesting aspect of the brain is its cognitive abilities. The endless variability of the brain's cognition makes the study of neurology a bottomless water glass for my unquenchable thirst for knowledge. Finally, as England is home to such fine literature as that of Shakespeare, and Oxford itself has contributed much to the English language and its Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 10. My First Experience At Orientation My first experience at orientation was Dean Groves' stately voice in Old Cabell Hall giving an unforgettable speech about the future role of the class of 2019. The calmness and excitement he brought to the incoming class while he spoke was indescribable. He made me and everyone else feel as though we had a purpose and could make UVA a better place over our time here. When I asked my friends at other schools in Virginia what they thought about their Dean of Students, they could not even recall the dean's name let alone his or her influence on the students. The students of UVA are thankful to Dean Groves for the effort he puts in to connect with us and for the influence he has on our experience here. There is obviously a large difference between Dean Groves and the faculty at other schools, so what is it about his personality that makes him so popular with the student body and community in Charlottesville? I used the Big 5 model of personality to examine Dean Groves. This test is made up of five factors – extraversion, neuroticism, agreeableness, conscientiousness, and openness. Groves agreed to take the NEO–IPIP, which is a free, online version of the Big 5 test. A colleague of his also agreed to take the test as if she was he. The purpose of the colleague taking the test was to attempt to control any self–report bias that could have occurred on Groves' own results. They both completed the shorter version of the test, which is composed of 150 questions. Groves and the Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 11. Personal Statement For Artificial Intelligence Andrew Ng, former Baidu Chief Scientist and Coursera co–founder, terms Artificial Intelligence (AI) as the "new electricity" – it is the highest–impact technology that has the potential to alter the pace of scientific progress and enhance human life. Using machine learning and artificial intelligence for solving social issues can be fulfilling both emotionally and financially. This epiphany struck me when I came across AI becoming a catalyst for revolutionizing healthcare. Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and more recently Manipal Hospitals in India have implemented a cognitive computing platform for cancer treatment to assist doctors to recommend personalized evidence–based cancer care options. Similarly, AI is in early stages of adoption...show more content... To succeed in this endeavor, I believe that a Master's degree in Computer and Information Science (CIS) from the University of Pennsylvania (Penn) is the logical next step. As an avid quizzer, I was fascinated when IBM Watson beat two of Jeopardy's all–time greats Brad Rutter and Ken Jennings. Consequently, I realized that the "Man vs Machine" could be transformed into a "Machine for man" paradigm whereby machine learning augments human intelligence in solving practical issues. I developed a keen interest in Math, Physics and Computer Science at the Higher Secondary level (Grades XI and XII) where I graduated with a 99th percentile score nationally (among 930,000 candidates). I specialized in Computer Science in the undergraduate program at the College of Engineering, Anna University, the oldest technical school (founded in 1794) and a Top 10 ranked engineering school in India (NIRF India). • 12. My experience throughout English 101 Essay My Experience throughout English 101 As writers, many students write to the expectations of their professors and not to their fullest potential. Throughout English 101 I had been writing only to please my professor or to fill the basic requirement to pass English. I always felt that my writing ability was never enough for my professors throughout the previous years. They always wanted clear and concise essays, which for some reason was unreachable by me. However, starting college and taking English 101 helped me with my weaknesses and changed my technique of writing essays. My experience in English 101 taught me to write to my fullest potential and to write what I felt; rather then writing what was required. In the...show more content... Also, by revising my essays I felt that I had the chance of writing with a broader sense. Another weakness that I had coming into English 101 was my way of reading. I remember having to read an essay or book 3 or 4 times before I could ever sit down and write about it. I was looking and at the words all wrong. However, my professor introduced a technique of reading critically. "A critical analysis, on the other hand, takes a viewpoint and attempts to its validity;" (Trimble, 95) In Trimble's quote he is trying say that a critical analysis helps a reader understand what the author is really trying to point out. This was the same approach that was taught to me by my professor. This type of analysis helped me understand better what the author was trying to convey and it also helped me explain it better in my essays. Additionally, another weakness that I had when coming into English 101 was that I was a selfish writer. Like Trimble said, "His natural tendency as a writer is to think primarily of himself– hence to write primarily for himself." (Trimble, 4) I was a writer who only cared about impressing one type of audience my professor and not writing to prove a point or expand my knowledge to several other audiences. However, after writing several unsatisfying essays I had come to realize that my style of writing was too narrow and boring. In this realization of writing I discovered that what matters the most is pleasing your audience (many not one), and Get more content on HelpWriting.net

  • 16. Oxygen Essay Oxygen Oxygen, symbol O, colorless, odorless, tasteless, slightly magnetic gaseous element. On earth, oxygen is more abundant than any other element. Oxygen was discovered in 1774 by the British chemist Joseph Priestley and, independently, by the Swedish chemist Carl Wilhelm Scheele; it was shown to be an elemental gas by the French chemist Antoine Laurent Lavoisier in his classic experiments on combustion. Large amounts of oxygen are used in high–temperature welding torches, in which a mixture of oxygen and another gas produces a flame of much higher temperature than is obtained by burning gases in air. Oxygen is administered to patients whose breathing is impaired and also to...show more content... Gaseous oxygen can be condensed to a pale blue liquid that is strongly magnetic. Pale blue solid oxygen is produced by compressing the liquid. Oxygen comprises 60 percent of the human body. It is a constituent of all living tissues; almost all plants and animals, including all humans, require oxygen, in the free or combined state, to maintain life.3 Three structural forms of oxygen are known: ordinary oxygen, containing two atoms per molecule, formula O2; ozone, containing three atoms per molecule, formula O3; and a pale blue, nonmagnetic form, O4, containing four atoms per molecule, which readily breaks down into ordinary oxygen. Three stable isotopes of oxygen are known; oxygen–16 (atomic mass 16) is the most abundant. It comprises 99.76 percent of ordinary oxygen and was used in determination of atomic weights until the 1960s. Oxygen is prepared in the laboratory from salts such as potassium chlorate, barium peroxide, and sodium peroxide. The most important industrial methods for the preparation of oxygen are the electrolysis of water and the Get more content on HelpWriting.net

When I talk about my personal experience, I would say that I have a rich experience in learning English as a second language. English was taught to me for ten years starting from grade seven till graduation from university. After graduation, I felt that I should improve my language skills. Therefore, I did a lot of efforts personally to increase my fluency. Until now I still learn the language. Indeed, learning a language takes a lifetime. I started learning English as a second language when I was in first intermediate. I still remember my first classes and my first teachers. I remember that my teachers changed frequently in the first year but all of them have much in common. All of them used grammar translation method. They used to write bilingual lists of words on board, then we, as students, were asked to copy these lists and memorize them by heart. All teaching concentrated on reading and writing skills, but there were no activities concentrating on speaking or listening. In addition, grammar rules were taught in that stage of learning the language as mathematics equations, and we were asked to memorize the rules as we ...show more content... Although the number of sex discrimination claims have dropped by 41% from 18,300 in 2010/11 to 10,800 in 2011/12, it continues to be the most frequent type of discrimination claim received by tribunals. Before the Suffragettes, women were not able to vote and the move for women to have the right to vote really started in 1897 when Millicent Fawcett founded the National Union of Women's Suffrage. Fawcett strongly believed that women should have the right to vote but also believed in peaceful protests, patience and logical arguments. She felt that if any violence occurred then men would believe that women could not be trusted and therefore should not have the right to vote. She also made the argument that if women were made responsible for sitting on school boards and paying taxes that they should be part of the process to make the laws and should have the same rights as men. A main argument of hers was that even though some women who were wealthy mistresses of large manors and estates employed gardeners, workmen and labourers who were able to vote but women still could not, regardless of their wealth and social class. However, the progress of Fawcett was very slow and although she converted some of the members of the Labour Representation Committee (The Labour Party) but the majority of men felt that women would not understand how parliament functioned and therefore should not take part in the electoral Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Thousands of tourists have crowded onto and around San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge to celebrate the iconic structure's 75th birthday.Crowds partied across its three–kilometer length, boats cruised on the water below and a finale of fireworks lit up the San Franciscan sky. It took four years to build, costing US$35 million and finally opened in 1937. It has remained one of the engineering world's most famous poster boys since. But it's not the only bridge that merits celebration.Here...show more content... So we used a cup to count the number of the pennies. The independent variable in this experiment is the spaghetti strands whereas the dependent variable would be the number of pennies being added in the cup. The things that are held constant is the same cup, the same type of pennies, the type of spaghetti that is being used in this experiment, the placement of where the spaghettis should be placed, and the initial setup meaning the same table. First we started with one strand of spaghetti, and placed the cup with the string in the center of the spaghetti, and with that we constantly added pennies into the cup until the spaghetti strands breaks. We continued with this process by adding another strand each time.Everyone would not get the same exact results, but everyone should have gotten roughly the same pattern of proportionality. Not all of our bridges were constructed in the same manner, so our results would differ. The design of the bridge can largely affect the outcome of the data in this particular lab.Three important vocabulary words pertinent to this experiment are independent variable, dependent variable, and controlled variable. Then let me know these three words is very important for this lab. Then the design of the bridge was different in each group.Maybe my Get more content on HelpWriting.net
