3. 2. Effective Manager of Issues Daily issues are bread and butter of any Project Manager – any day without one is a lost day! My 4-step plan to tackle issues:
4. 2. Effective Manager of Risks Risk is anything that constraints something that is of value to the project 5-step plan to tackle risks:
6. 4. Understand daily mechanics of the Project Get a complete grasp of the key project management processes and deliverables Be on top of each one of them Various methodologies and qualifications are just the means to an end and not the end in itself Their goal is to ensure successful delivery of the project that meats the criteria set in the project charter/PID/Business Case
7. 5. Simple conceptualising of complex issues Different people in the project have different view of the project at different times It is imperative that they are on the same page and they understand any issues before I ask them for their opinions I ensure this occurs by providing simplistic diagrams – either on flipcharts, whiteboards or PowerPoint – the key is to get your point across!
8. 6. Great Multi-tasker All my recent experiences have been with working on multiple projects concurrently that too with finesse and great alacrity Even if you are working on one project you need to spawn your thought processes on – future tasks, risks, issues, stakeholders, team members, morale, costs, quality, scope creep etc. etc. I think multi-tasking is a great aphrodisiac to a Project Manager!
9. 7. Desire to go above and beyond However difficult the project is or however unfathomable the problem is I have managed to find the solution. Tenacity, consistent and focussed effort, ability to search for options always saw me through most exacting times in my career and in my projects A day without discomfort is a day without growth “Can-do” no-nonsense attitude allows me to break free from the clutches of the comfort zone A person grows most tired while standing still
10. 8. Competent Team Leader Believe in leading by example Self-motivation rubs on the team members and inspires others to action Maintain healthy humour Personal integrity and discipline Trust my team members’ abilities “Ability is what you’re capable of doing. Motivation determines what you do. Attitude determines how well you do it.” ~ Lou Holtz
11. 9. Convincing Communicator Clarity and simplicity is the key in any effective communication I employ all three means of communication where possible – words (verbal, written), voice (intonation) and body language (expressions, hand gestures etc.) I employ additional tools where required to make the point clear and unambiguous Ensure from the other person’s cues that he/she has got the point that I am trying to make Summarise at the end of the conversation with notes, actions and timelines to act on those actions
12. 10. Great Chaser Majority of the tasks need effective chasing especially in non-dedicated matrix organisations where people are split amongst different projects Care and diplomacy has to be exercised so as not to over-chase. However, carrot and stick needs to be employed wherever required. More often than not conflicting priorities have to be managed through – proper dialogue, agreement, understanding or escalation.
13. Recommendations Following are some of the recommendations from my past colleagues – more can be found on my linked in profile: “Sushil successfully delivered several tricky projects for me which demonstrated his tenacity in delivery, ability to find innovative solutions and approaches to problems, and commitment and drive to get the job done. As a colleague he is a positive, motivating force and, importantly, fun to work with.” May 9, 2011 “I met Sushil while working on a project in Singapore. There are three things that crop to my mind while i think of Sushil; the level of detail that he gets into, his sincerity at work and how well he helped his peers at work. Above this he took ownership of problems and resolved them sincerely. I wish him all the best.” December 28, 2010 “Sushil is a diligent, competent project manager who manages to be cheerful whilst doggedly determined to deliver to the customer even when the odds are stacked against him! A pleasure to work with.” December 8, 2010
