2. • There are 13 stripes for the colonies.

3. • The flag stands for the land, the people, the
government and the ideals of the United
States.

4. • It was made in 1776.

5. • It is best know symbol of the United States.

6. • In 1777 American leaders chose a new flag.

7. • By 1794, two new states had joined the
Union.

8. • The U.S Congress decided to add two stars
and two stripes to the flag.

9. • Five more states had come into the Union
by the end of 1817.

10. • Congress did not want the flag to have 20
stars and 20 stripes, because it would be
too cluttered.

11. • Peter Wendover, a congressman from New
York, proposed a flag of 13 stripes, with a
star for each state.

12. • Congress accepted the idea.

13. • In 1818, it set the number of stripes at 13
again.

14. • It also ordered that a new star be added to
the flag on the July 4th after a state joined
the Union.

15. • The flag in use of today was established in
1960, when a 50th star was added to
represent Hawaii.

16. • Hawaii had become the 50th state on Aug.
21,1959.

17. • Red is for hardiness and valor(courage).

18. • White is for purity and innocence.

19. • Blue is for vigilance, perseverance, and
justice.
