A DAY IN THE LIFE
OF A
MARINE BIOLOGIST
Sydney Ednie
Around 75% of the Earth surface
is covered in ocean so you can
imagine that Marine Biology is a
very large field. The wonders of
the ocean await you….….……
What is a Marine Biologist?
The title “Marine Biologist” is a very large subject
and job, some M.Bs study the effects of the tide
and saltwater organism and see how they effect
the land environment. Other Marine Bios study the
migration of ocean sea and sharks while others
might study the interaction between coral and
coral reef fish. What I do for my job as a Marine
Biologist is working at the local aquariums animal
hospital caring for the injured animals that come
in from rescues. We may keep them for health
studies or any injuries. I also go out and take
samples of coral and sea urchins.
Marine Biologist General Day
9:00 am – 9:30 am
Preparing equipment
9:30 am – 10:30 am
Collecting animal samples underwater (could be fish, crabs, clams, mussels, etc.)
10:30 am – 11:00 am
Organizing samples; taking a break.
11:00 am – 12:00 pm
Collecting more samples.
12:00 pm – 2:00 pm
Organizing samples; walking back to the field station; placing samples in tanks;
eating lunch with other scientists. Doing data analysis on the computer.
4:00 pm – 5:00 pm
Tagging animal samples for a lab experiment.
5:00 pm – 6:00 pm
Monitoring the results of a feeding experiment from the previous day.
If you want to start your career early you need to have
a good GPA and high grades in all math and sciences
in high school. You need a Bachelors degree, as well
as a physics, chemistry, biology, geology, ecology,
calculus and statistic classes. I took physics and
biology in high school so I only need geology and
ecology. I went to UCSB for four years and now have a
masters degree!

Once again fine details depend on the
type of Marine field you work in. The
average range is from 40K-100K a year
depending on where and who you work for.
I make about 70K a year, because I own
my own business, and work at the
aquarium.
Types of Animals/Plants I Work With
• All types of coral reef fish, such as angel fish, craw fish, lion fish, ect.
• Seals, seal lions, dolphins, all genres of whales and sharks
• Crabs, lobsters, shrimps, krill, corals, sea anemones
• Squid, octopi, jellyfish, clams, muscles, starfish
Me when I was younger, getting
involved at Sea World where I
learnt I wanted to be a Marine
Biologist.
• Im currently 26 living in Kauai, Hawaii.
• I love photography. My hobby whenever I'm
not working is to be a photographer.
• I have a dolphin at the aquarium named
bubbles.
• I live in a new condo with my boyfriend.
• In a few years I hope to have my own animal
rights foundation 
• I’ve learned to have a large respect for what
we dump into the ocean and how small things
may destroy under water animals lives.
