2. A Style of Her Own Sophie is known for her unique sound and generation changing charm. Her way of incorporating pop into jazz has swept not only her own country but our nation as well.
3. Finding Her Way Sophie was born in Russia where her family suffered extreme scrutiny and hardship. When the Berlin Wall fell they had a chance to escape and took it. Settling into Israel, Sophie first began finding her love for jazz. After landing an audition with a traveling children’s show the life of fame began for Sophie and there was no turning back.
4. Sophie on Israel “Israel has affected me greatly. Life there gave me a totally different spin on the world. Once I managed to master the language and stopped feeling like an outsider, I made some wonderful friends. The endless security problem in that part of the world makes people very close, strong and intense. A big part of my personality, values and social sensibilities were formed there.”
9. Take Love Easy… “Almost all the songs deal with the ambiguity of love and life,” Sophie says. “Some are more hopeful, some are more melancholy and others deal with the gray areas - indecision, unrequited yearning, self-preservation and the aftermath of a break-up. Love is analogous to life. To me, beyond the romantic connotations, the songs reflect my understanding of the world and my relationship with myself.” – Sophie Milman
10. 'Vocal Jazz Album of the Year' In 2008 Sophie won the Juno Award for Vocal Jazz Album of the Year for Make Someone Happy.
11. Her Band "When a person matures, there's a style and confidence that emerges. I would not have been brave enough to do these songs when I was younger. I am able to do them now because I have surrounded myself with fantastic musicians. The band deserves a lot of credit for our sound. "
12. Inspirations… Mahelia Jackson Ella Fitzgerald Louis Armstrong Oscar Peterson Count Basie the Platters Stevie Wonder George Gershwin Duke Ellington Ray Charles American music and especially the voices and sounds of African American musicians were her favorites.
