AND DRINK-THEMED FILMS, DESIGNED TO TITILLATE THE TASTE BUDS AND EXCITE
EVEN THE MOST JADED OF PALATES.
EAT DRINK MAN WOMAN
THORNHILL
THOMAS TOSH, 19 E MORTON STREET, DG3 5LZ
Ang Lee’s Oscar-nominated film is on the face of it
a comedy about a master chef with three grown-up
daughters, but the joy of this film is in the details of the
complexities of family relationships, the unspoken bonds
and grievances between father and daughters, and the
relationships they have with his cooking. Using the large
traditional Sunday lunches Chu cooks for his daughters
as a centrepiece, the film serves up a complex interaction
between traditional and modern food, intergenerational
discord and a struggle for identity in a modern Taiwan.
Thomas Tosh invite you to a delicious Taiwanese buffet
before the screening, with an intermission for Taiwanese
sweets.

and poignantly funny” Hal Hinson,Washington Post

THE ANGEL’S SHARE
SANQUHAR
‘A THE AIRTS, 8-12 HIGH STREET, DG4 6BL
The ‘angel’s share’ is the name given to the 2% of whisky
that evaporates from the cask each year. In this warm and
witty film, a group of youngsters on community service
plan a complex whisky heist when one of their number
discovers he has a talent for whisky tasting. The water
of life becomes a metaphor for the possibilities for social
redemption and freedom from a life of crime. Ken Loach
is known for his social commentaries, but at the age of
75 turns out one of his most joyful films.
“Bracingly optimistic … one of Loach’s spriteliest films
made at an age when most directors have hung up their
viewfinders.” Phillip French,The Guardian
A’ the Airts are very pleased to have some special guests
from the Annandale Distillery who will host a whisky
tasting session before the screening. They will be doing
a brief presentation about their plans for the distillery,
re-opened after 90 years.

cottage in the Lake District, without realising that it

quite possibly one of the greatest cult films ever made,
and a joyous celebration of drinking at a time when the

of a Government health campaigner. Come and enjoy a
Sunday roast at the Craigdarroch before the film, 5 pm –

GOODFELLAS
This classic film is now 25 years old, and is the true
story of Henry Hill (Ray Liotta), a half-Irish, half-Sicilian
Brooklyn kid who is adopted by neighborhood gangsters
at an early age and climbs the ranks of a Mafia family.
Based on the true-life bestseller,Wiseguy, and backed by
a dynamic pop/rock oldies soundtrack, GoodFellas was a
hit with both critics and movie-goers alike, and received
six Academy Award nominations, including “Best Picture”
and “Best Director” (and a win for Joe Pesci’s astounding
performance).

be a gangster. To me that was better than being
president of the United States. To be a gangster

ADDICTED TO SHEEP
In the North Pennines, tenant farmers Tom and Kay
spend their days looking after their flock of prized sheep,
and hoping that this will be the year they breed the
perfect one. Director Magali Pettier, herself a farmer’s
daughter, follows a year in their lives, capturing both the
stark, stunning beauty of the landscape, and the brutally
hard graft it takes just to survive.Their three children are
growing up close to the land, attending a school entirely
comprised of farmers’ children, thoroughly immersed
in their remote rural world.A terrific and unflinching
documentary about rural life and the economic
rollercoaster that is farming today.
“a wonderful blend of innocence and experience.
The whole family are terrific company”
Mark Kermode, Guardian.
The RBCFT hope to have a special guest to introduce
this film.

marriage, and her pregnancy are all channelled into her
pie baking as she takes steps, sometimes one forward,
two back, into discovering her own identity and making
her own choices. This is the first and only feature of indie

original and innovative directing talent.
