What is a Personal Learning
         Network?
           PLNs
A definition

“Personal learning networks are the sum of all
social capital and connections that result in the
development and facilitation of a personal
learning environment.”

Veletsianos, George Emerging Technologies in Distance Education (AU Press 2010)

PLN based on Connectivism
“The learning process is cyclical, in that learners will
connect to a network to share and find new
information, will modify their beliefs on the basis of
new learning, and will then connect to a network to
share these realizations and find new information
once more. Learning is considered a ‘. . . knowledge
creation process . . . not only knowledge
consumption.’ “

Kop, Rita & Hill, Adrian “Connectivism: Learning theory of the future or vestige of the past”
http://www.irrodl.org/index.php/irrodl/article/view/523/1103
Popular tools & resources for PLN in TAFE
Why have a PLN?
PLNs central to life long learning
“PLNs Central To Learning …the tremendous
amount of time and effort put into the
development of local , time-based, course-
centric communities. The communities die
usually only days after the official end-of-course
date. They die because they are communities
based around courses, not communities based
around communal learning.”
Veletsianos, George Emerging Technologies in Distance Education (AU Press 2010)
Open teaching facilitates learning
“Open teaching is described as the facilitation of
learning experiences that are open, transparent,
collaborative and social. Open teachers are
advocates of a free and open knowledge society
and support their students in the critical
consumption, production, connections and
synthesis of knowledge through the shared
development of learning networks….”
Veletsianos, George Emerging Technologies in Distance Education (AU Press 2010)
Learning from diverse networks
“the more diverse, global, and heterogeneous a
set of networks that one participates in, the
more learning that occurs (Boyd & Ellison,
2007).”
Willmarth, Stephen, Chapter 5: Five Socio-Technology Trends that Change Everything in Learning and Teaching

Teaching the younger generation
“The new power of social media and networking
technologies to teach is perhaps the least
leveraged technology in formal education
systems today. Social networking technologies
are powerful tools for enhancing the process of
learning to be, of defining our identities. Digital
social networks are now an essential part of the
experience of everyone under the age of 20.”
Veletsianos, George Emerging Technologies in Distance Education (AU Press 2010)
New ways of finding and sharing
        information
From Cathedral to Bazaar
“We’re forced to replace the metaphor of a tree
of knowledge, organised in a Dewey decimal-like
fashion, with a cloud metaphor as participants
in the information bazaar reconstruct the
relevance and relationships of knowledge
artefacts in ever-changing shapes and patterns”

Willmarth, Stephen, Chapter 5: Five Socio-Technology Trends that Change Everything in Learning
and Teaching http://204.200.153.100/ebeling/5SocioTechTrends.pdf

How do I go about developing a
             PLN?
5 Stages of PLN adoption
1.Immersion
Immerse yourself into networks
2.Evaluation
Focus on networks you really want
3.Know it all
Addicted to networks of knowledge
4.Perspective http://www.flickr.com/photos/jutecht/2384289406/

Disconnect and put your life into perspective
5.Balance
Learning and living balance
What teachers are saying about
        building a PLN
Shawn Avery
“Making connections with other classroom
teachers has provided so many learning
opportunities for myself as well as my students.
My teaching world was relatively sheltered up
until this past year. I would often collaborate
with other educators within my school.
However, my collaboration was confined to
that.”
Shawn Avery at http://teacherchallenge.edublogs.org/category/a-whole-new-pln/
Jo Hart
“iGoogle is not the only way I keep up with my PLN
but it is a great summariser as it enables me to
check everything out all in one place and then
choose to move elsewhere to see more. For
example I use Tweetdeck for most of my Twitter
interaction... In contrast I keep up with blog posts
and comments using the Google Reader gadget on
iGoogle and almost never accessing Google Reader
directly for my RSS feeds. I love this as I can scan a
list of titles and authors rather than scrolling
through all of the feed contents”
Jo Hart at http://teacherchallenge.edublogs.org/2011/07/04/pln-challenge-6-igoogle-a-ple-hub-for-your-pln-
wheel/
Kathleen Morris
“Think you’re not interested in Twitter? Think
again…It differs from Facebook in that it isn’t
just about reconnecting with people you
know…Twitter is about connecting with like
minded educators for personalised and ongoing
professional development…I find Twitter to be
like a virtual staffroom where I can catch up with
my PLN”
Kathleen Morris at http://teacherchallenge.edublogs.org/2011/06/21/pln-challenge-3-using-twitter-to-build-your-pln/
How do I manage my PLN?
