CHAPTER NO 1
INTRODUCTION
Shopping is an activity in which a customer browses the available goods or services presented by
one or more retailers with the potential intent to purchase a suitable selection of them. A typology
of shopper type has been developed by scholars who identify one group of shoppers as recreational
shoppers, that is, those who enjoy shopping and view it as a leisure activity. Traditional
shopping can be very time consuming if you haven't made the decision of what to buy. By
contrast, online shopping allows people to shop anytime, anywhere, and of course with no
boundaries between countries. In fact, these two ways of shopping share the same purpose, which
is buying things. In the traditional way of shopping the vendor and the store are very important.
The store gives the consumer the possibility to compare, orientate and get information about a
product. The physical store and its vendors are therefore very important, because they need to have
knowledge, skills, products, and services all at one place. Important factors are the shops location,
contacts, and assortment. When a physical store meets these qualifications, it will be successful.
But when customers are going to buy products another way the role of the physical store will
change, “and that is exactly what is happening in the retail market right now (Molenaar, 2011).”
There now is another way to shop, products can now be bought on the internet.
1.1 ONLINE SHOPPING:
Online shopping is a process whereby consumers directly buy goods, services etc. from a seller
without an intermediary service over the Internet. Shoppers can visit web stores from the
comfort of their house and shop as by sitting in front of the
computer. Online shopping has become a major disruptor
in the retail industry. Consumers can now search for
product information and place product orders across
different regions while online retailers deliver their
products directly to the consumers' home, offices or wherever they want. The B2C (business to
consumer) process has made it easy for consumers to select any product online from a retailer's
website and to have it delivered relatively quickly. Using online shopping methods, consumers
do not need to consume energy by physically visiting physical stores, but save time and the cost
of travelling. A retailer or a shop is a business that presents a selection of goods and offers to
trade or sell them to customer for money or other goods. Online shopping is the part of E-
commerce which stands for electronic commerce.
1.2 FEATURES OF ONLINE SHOPPING
 Convenience.
 Better prices.
 More variety
 You can send gifts more easily
 More control
 Easy price comparisons
 No crowds
 No pressure
 24*7 services
 Good quality products
 Easy exchange facilities
 Cheap from market price
 Elimination of retailer
 Easy payment system
 Best offer on occasions
1.3 ADVANTAGES OF ONLINE SHOPPING
 Convenience
Convenience is the biggest perk. Where else can you comfortably shop at midnight while in
your pajamas? There are no lines to wait in or cashiers to track down to help you with your
purchases, and you can do your shopping in minutes. Online shops give us the opportunity
to shop 24/7, and also reward us with a ‘no pollution’ shopping experience.
 Better prices
Cheap deals and better prices are available online, because products come to you direct
from the manufacturer or seller without involving middlemen. Plus, it's easier to compare
prices and find a better deal. Many online sites offer discount coupons and rebates, as
well. Not only are prices better, but you can save on tax as well, since online shops are only
required to collect a sales tax if they have a physical location in your state.
 More variety
The choices online are amazing. You can find almost any brand or item you're looking for.
You can get in on the latest international trends without spending money on airfare. We can
shop from retailers in other parts of the state, country, or even world instead of being
limited to your own geography.
 You can send gifts more easily
and shipping is done for you. Oftentimes, they'll even gift wrap it for you! Now, there is no
need to make distance an excuse for not sending a gift on occasions like birthdays,
weddings, anniversaries, Valentine's Day, Mother's Day, Father's Day, and so forth.
 More control.
Many times, when we opt for conventional shopping, we tend to spend a lot more than
planned and end up buying items that aren't exactly what we wanted (but we can't find
anything better in the store). Online, you don't have to let the store's inventory dictate what
you buy, and you can get exactly what you want and need.
 No crowd.
The main advantage of online shopping is that there is no problem of crowd over there
We don’t need to stand in the queues for our turn. Here we easily use our mobile phone and
search the thing we want.
 24*7 services.
The main advantage of online shopping is that it is available for 24*7 we anytime select
on it and the order will place in a few seconds. We can order anything at any time even at
anytime
 Easy exchange facility.
There is very easy facility of exchange if anything which we order is not for our choice we
easily return it. The amount will refund after sometime. There is a return policy of each and
every site their own. We easily follow it and return the products.
1.4 DIFFERNCE BETWEEN ONLINE AND OFFLINE SHOPPING
 In Offline Shopping it’s very time consuming to go to store & choose products
wherein Online Shopping you just need few minutes to buy products.
 There are many discounts available in Offline Stores but you can’t visit each store to
get information about discounts but in online shopping you can easily compare your
products price & discounts there are many price compare site available so that you can
compare products price just in one click.
 In offline shopping you have to think how to carry products but in online shopping
you will get product direct to your home.
 In offline stores at payment time you will find much rush & it will also consume much
time & you have to wait in queue but in Online shopping you can checkout in few
seconds.
 Offline Stores has opening timings whereas you can do Shopping via Online Store at
any time. No time restriction.
1.5 ROLE OF ONLINE SHOPPING
Because of the numerous advantages and benefits, more and more people say they prefer online
shopping over conventional shopping these days. The buyer’s decision-making process has changed
dramatically in recent years. Buyers are conducting extensive research online before ever speaking
to a sales person. Buyers are also making more direct purchases online and via their smartphone,
never stepping foot into traditional brick-and-mortar locations. The internet makes doing business
much easier and faster. It’s led to changes in the way people do business with a rapidly growing
world-wide trend towards online shopping or e-commerce.

CHALLENGES FACED BY FLIPKART
Initially when they started out, it wasn’t easy for them to earn the trust of the customer.
Handing customer complaints, without having a face to their customer service proves to be bit of
a challenges at times.
CONCLUSION
Technology has made significant progress over the years to provide consumers a better online
shopping experience and will continue to do so for years to come. With the rapid growth of
products and brands, people have speculated that online shopping will overtake in-store
shopping. While this has been the case in some areas, there is still demand for brick and mortar
stores in market areas where the consumer feels more comfortable seeing and touching the product
being bought. However, the availability of online shopping has produced a more educated
consumer that can shop around with relative ease without having to spend a large amount of
time. In exchange, online shopping has opened up doors to many small retailers that would never
be in business if they had to incur the high cost of owning a brick and mortar store. At the end, it
has been a win-win situation for both consumer and sellers.
While online shopping has its attraction, there are also a number of drawbacks. For example,
buying something in a store puts the goods into the consumer’s hands immediately whereas there
is a delay with online shopping since the product has
to be shipped to the consumer. In addition, the seller
may choose to pass down the cost of shipping to the
customer offsetting some or all of the discount that
came with online shopping. Another drawback is
when the consumer is not satisfied with the
purchase. In order to return a product to an ordinary
store, the customer simply has to go to the store and return the product in adherence with the return
policy. However, returning an online purchase may have the consumer incur additional charges
with the return shipping costs. While larger online stores have factored some of these
considerations into their selling model, there are still a number of online vendors that attempt to
pass as much of the expense onto the customer as possible.

A Seminar Report On TOP 10 ONLINE SHOPPING SITES In the partial fulfilment of the degree of Master in Commerce SUBMITTED TO SUBMITTED BY Prof Ravneet Kaur Ms. Romita Assistant Professor Class Roll No. 4203 Department of commerce Uni. • 2. CHAPTER NO 1 INTRODUCTION Shopping is an activity in which a customer browses the available goods or services presented by one or more retailers with the potential intent to purchase a suitable selection of them. A typology of shopper type has been developed by scholars who identify one group of shoppers as recreational shoppers, that is, those who enjoy shopping and view it as a leisure activity. Traditional shopping can be very time consuming if you haven't made the decision of what to buy. By contrast, online shopping allows people to shop anytime, anywhere, and of course with no boundaries between countries. In fact, these two ways of shopping share the same purpose, which is buying things. In the traditional way of shopping the vendor and the store are very important. The store gives the consumer the possibility to compare, orientate and get information about a product. The physical store and its vendors are therefore very important, because they need to have knowledge, skills, products, and services all at one place. Important factors are the shops location, contacts, and assortment. When a physical store meets these qualifications, it will be successful. But when customers are going to buy products another way the role of the physical store will change, “and that is exactly what is happening in the retail market right now (Molenaar, 2011).” There now is another way to shop, products can now be bought on the internet. 1.1 ONLINE SHOPPING: Online shopping is a process whereby consumers directly buy goods, services etc. from a seller without an intermediary service over the Internet. Shoppers can visit web stores from the comfort of their house and shop as by sitting in front of the computer. Online shopping has become a major disruptor in the retail industry. Consumers can now search for product information and place product orders across different regions while online retailers deliver their products directly to the consumers' home, offices or wherever they want. The B2C (business to consumer) process has made it easy for consumers to select any product online from a retailer's website and to have it delivered relatively quickly. Using online shopping methods, consumers do not need to consume energy by physically visiting physical stores, but save time and the cost of travelling. A retailer or a shop is a business that presents a selection of goods and offers to trade or sell them to customer for money or other goods. Online shopping is the part of E- commerce which stands for electronic commerce.
  • 3. 1.2 FEATURES OF ONLINE SHOPPING  Convenience.  Better prices.  More variety  You can send gifts more easily  More control  Easy price comparisons  No crowds  No pressure  24*7 services  Good quality products  Easy exchange facilities  Cheap from market price  Elimination of retailer  Easy payment system  Best offer on occasions 1.3 ADVANTAGES OF ONLINE SHOPPING  Convenience Convenience is the biggest perk. Where else can you comfortably shop at midnight while in your pajamas? There are no lines to wait in or cashiers to track down to help you with your purchases, and you can do your shopping in minutes. Online shops give us the opportunity to shop 24/7, and also reward us with a ‘no pollution’ shopping experience.  Better prices Cheap deals and better prices are available online, because products come to you direct from the manufacturer or seller without involving middlemen. Plus, it's easier to compare prices and find a better deal. Many online sites offer discount coupons and rebates, as well. Not only are prices better, but you can save on tax as well, since online shops are only required to collect a sales tax if they have a physical location in your state.  More variety The choices online are amazing. You can find almost any brand or item you're looking for. You can get in on the latest international trends without spending money on airfare. We can
  • 4. shop from retailers in other parts of the state, country, or even world instead of being limited to your own geography.  You can send gifts more easily and shipping is done for you. Oftentimes, they'll even gift wrap it for you! Now, there is no need to make distance an excuse for not sending a gift on occasions like birthdays, weddings, anniversaries, Valentine's Day, Mother's Day, Father's Day, and so forth.  More control. Many times, when we opt for conventional shopping, we tend to spend a lot more than planned and end up buying items that aren't exactly what we wanted (but we can't find anything better in the store). Online, you don't have to let the store's inventory dictate what you buy, and you can get exactly what you want and need.  No crowd. The main advantage of online shopping is that there is no problem of crowd over there We don’t need to stand in the queues for our turn. Here we easily use our mobile phone and search the thing we want.  24*7 services. The main advantage of online shopping is that it is available for 24*7 we anytime select on it and the order will place in a few seconds. We can order anything at any time even at anytime  Easy exchange facility. There is very easy facility of exchange if anything which we order is not for our choice we easily return it. The amount will refund after sometime. There is a return policy of each and every site their own. We easily follow it and return the products.
  • 5. 1.4 DIFFERNCE BETWEEN ONLINE AND OFFLINE SHOPPING  In Offline Shopping it’s very time consuming to go to store & choose products wherein Online Shopping you just need few minutes to buy products.  There are many discounts available in Offline Stores but you can’t visit each store to get information about discounts but in online shopping you can easily compare your products price & discounts there are many price compare site available so that you can compare products price just in one click.  In offline shopping you have to think how to carry products but in online shopping you will get product direct to your home.  In offline stores at payment time you will find much rush & it will also consume much time & you have to wait in queue but in Online shopping you can checkout in few seconds.  Offline Stores has opening timings whereas you can do Shopping via Online Store at any time. No time restriction. 1.5 ROLE OF ONLINE SHOPPING Because of the numerous advantages and benefits, more and more people say they prefer online shopping over conventional shopping these days. The buyer’s decision-making process has changed dramatically in recent years. Buyers are conducting extensive research online before ever speaking to a sales person. Buyers are also making more direct purchases online and via their smartphone, never stepping foot into traditional brick-and-mortar locations. The internet makes doing business much easier and faster. It’s led to changes in the way people do business with a rapidly growing world-wide trend towards online shopping or e-commerce.

  • 20. CONCLUSION Technology has made significant progress over the years to provide consumers a better online shopping experience and will continue to do so for years to come. With the rapid growth of products and brands, people have speculated that online shopping will overtake in-store shopping. While this has been the case in some areas, there is still demand for brick and mortar stores in market areas where the consumer feels more comfortable seeing and touching the product being bought. However, the availability of online shopping has produced a more educated consumer that can shop around with relative ease without having to spend a large amount of time. In exchange, online shopping has opened up doors to many small retailers that would never be in business if they had to incur the high cost of owning a brick and mortar store. At the end, it has been a win-win situation for both consumer and sellers. While online shopping has its attraction, there are also a number of drawbacks. For example, buying something in a store puts the goods into the consumer’s hands immediately whereas there is a delay with online shopping since the product has to be shipped to the consumer. In addition, the seller may choose to pass down the cost of shipping to the customer offsetting some or all of the discount that came with online shopping. Another drawback is when the consumer is not satisfied with the purchase. In order to return a product to an ordinary store, the customer simply has to go to the store and return the product in adherence with the return policy. However, returning an online purchase may have the consumer incur additional charges with the return shipping costs. While larger online stores have factored some of these considerations into their selling model, there are still a number of online vendors that attempt to pass as much of the expense onto the customer as possible.
