Music Magazine Survey: Analysis of results
The majority of the audience were aged between 13-18. This shows a younger target audience for teenagers. This shows
that the audience are appealing to younger people. This means that the magazine made will have to target a younger
audience which will interest young people rather than older people. The respondents being younger is useful as I want to
appeal my magazine to a younger audience and shows that knowing my audience are this age I can focus different
conventions in my magazine to appeal them and not the other age. Furthermore, it shows that a younger audience use
media platforms like the internet. This is interesting and means I can use media platforms in my magazine as the audience
are open towards this as they’re younger meaning they’re willing to
try new things like this survey. As most of the
respondents are in a teenage age group it
means I can use informal language and
interesting layouts to appeal to them. This
means that there is more creativity with the
use of colour as the younger audience are
intrigued by new ideas. As they’re younger
it makes the audience more approachable to
new things.
QUESTION ONE: WHAT IS YOUR AGE?
The gender was quite similar. However it was shown that most of the respondents were female rather than male. Although
males did take the survey it shows that females were more willing to participate rather than males. This means that the
magazine I will be creating will focus more towards females. I will do this by presenting musicians that more females like
rather than males. By doing this I will use easier and somewhat feminine text for the audience to read. Also using gossip
of musicians in my magazine will make the audience appreciate it as they’re more willing to read gossip in their magazine
rather than males. However, I will make my magazine open to both. I will do this as I want both genders to really enjoy my
magazine and if I made it for only females I might lose the audience as females may be disinterested by that. As the
music of rock is quite heavy it means females
expect more colour denotations of black,
red etc. This shows a more neutral colour
base for both genders meaning
the magazine will feel quite equal to both.
There being more female respondents do
however show that they’re
more likely to try new things rather than
males. This means that if I add questionnaires
and competitions to my magazine it is likely I
will get more responses from females as they
seem more likely to reply instead of males.
QUESTION TWO: WHAT IS YOUR
GENDER?
QUESTION THREE: WHAT GENRE OF
MUSIC ARE YOU INTERESTED IN?
All respondents had different genres of music they were interested in. This shows that the respondents all had different
tastes. This is interesting and shows that the respondents were varied and didn’t like the entire same thing. The only
genres of music not chosen by any of the respondents were classical and jazz. This shows that none of the audience is
interested in this and that these types of music are not popular with younger people. I will not be displaying classical or
jazz music because of this result. The most popular genre of music was Rock, Alternative and Heavy metal. This shows
that my magazine will be based around the genre of rock.
This is useful as this is what genre of music I want
to display in my magazine. As it is rock it means all
different musicians can be displayed. As this is the
most popular genre it makes me specify what
genre my magazine will be meaning I will know
that Rock will be more popular with my audience
rather than country, R&B etc. This means I know
how I will be targeting my audience from what
Music they’re interested in.
On question four I kept my question musical based like the previous question. All respondents listened to music; nobody
responded that they never listened to music. This showed that everybody answering has some musical
knowledge and enjoy music. This shows that the audience chosen is at least listening to music once per day. This means
that the audience will be interested in what the magazine I’m making will include as it has music. Most of the respondents
answer that they listen to music for at least 3+ hours per day. This shows music is important for the audience as they're
listening to it often. This means the audience know what they’re talking about with music. Furthermore as the audience
listen to lots of music this means they will be interested if the music magazine includes a free CD. This will intrigue them
as they’re interested into listening to it. The
respondents seem to really love music for
listening to it so much it seems that they will
know knowledge on their music, this means
my music magazine will have to be
informative for them on the music they enjoy.
As they listen to music so much it shows
that music is an important aspect of this
audience’s life meaning they’re likely to buy
a music magazine as they enjoy listening to
music often.
QUESTION FOUR: HOW OFTEN DO YOU
LISTEN TO MUSIC A DAY?
QUESTION FIVE: WHY DO YOU LISTEN
TO YOUR MUSIC?
I wanted to see the respondent’s person opinions on why they personally listen to music. By doing this means I get a
verbal response. Verbally most of the respondents said that they found music entertaining. This shows that the audience
find it as an entertainment source for when they’re bored or they want to pass the time. This is useful as if this is
entertainment for the audience they're likely to want to read them music magazine as it will give secondary entertainment
from their music. Furthermore, some of the audience said they listened to their music as ‘escapism’ this shows that music
is important to the audience and it gives them a personal connection. For example: using music as the ‘soundtrack to my
life’ as one respondent commented shows that music is very important to them and that it reflects who they are. As it is
personal to the audience it shows that the
audience want the magazine to somewhat
connect to them on a personal level for
example the musicians personal life may
interest the audience as to why they make
the music. Also some of the respondents said
That music lifts their mood up and makes
Them happy. This means the audience want
to read more about the music they
Listen to as it will make them happy if they
Find out about the music that they enjoy.
QUESTION SIX: WHAT ARE YOUR
FAVOURITE UK MAGAZINES?
When asking what the audiences most favourite UK music magazine is the most popular music magazine was Q
magazine. This shows that the audience are familiar with one of the most popular magazines. It shows that the audience
know what is current and really like the way in which Q Magazine portrays their musicians and articles. This shows that I
should somewhat familiarise with Q magazine for my audience as it seems the audience like the way in which the
magazines laid out, the structure of text and how it is presented to the audience. The second favourite magazine was
Kerrang. This is a rock based music magazine so I can familiarise with making my magazine similar to Kerrang. As this is
the audiences second favourite is shows that the audience like to read them music specifically for them. As I am targeting
for rock music it means I can familiarise with
Kerrang and do similar aspects to my
magazine as they’re the same genre as
me. As Q Magazine and Kerrang are the
most popular it seems that the respondents
would be interested in mixing the two
magazine ideas together to create one
that they will really enjoy.
QUESTION SEVEN: WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE IN FUTURE
MUSIC MAGAZINES? MORE TALK ABOUT MUSIC, FESTIVALS ETC.
In this question I gave my respondents suggestions to what they could answer so it was easier to understand what I was
talking about. Most of the respondents said they wanted more talk of: interviews, tour dates and festival information.
These are the most frequently wanted things in future magazines. This shows that the audience want to see more of this
included in future magazines and they will be more likely to buy a magazine if it includes these things. Mentioning this
shows what isn’t being including in magazines now which are disinteresting the audience. As the respondents are quite
young wanting to know about music festivals is relevant for my magazine. This shows that the audience use music as a
social event and want to use the magazine as a source of information. They also mention wanting interviews. This shows
that the audience are interested in the
musicians as well as the music they create.
This shows that if I include an exclusive
Interview the audience are more likely to be
interested as they want to read something
That they enjoy and it shows that they enjoy
Interviews more than review sections of
Music magazines.
I wanted to see why my audience are interested in the music magazines to see how I should publish the magazine to be
appropriate for my audience. Most of the audience said that they read them as they’re interesting to read about their
favourite musicians. This shows that the audience use music magazines as a platform for information. This means that my
music magazine will have to be very informative about their favourite musicians and what they listen to. This is as the
music is very important to the audience and as it is to entertain yet inform them it has to be exciting and current for the
audience yet updating them at the same time. Some of the audience said current music magazines update them on the
latest news including albums and songs. This shows that the audience want to know more about the music in the
magazines rather than the musicians
themselves. Most of the responses were
similar however some said that they found
magazines relaxing. This shows the audience
find the magazine as something to do when
they’re stressed or want something to take their
mind off things. This shows it has to entertain
them to relax them into reading it. Some
respondents discussed how they didn’t read
these magazines. There were not many people
who said they didn’t read them, this is good as
it shows only a small number of people do not
read music magazines.
QUESTION EIGHT: WHY DO YOU READ THESE MUSIC MAGAZINES? DOES
IT GIVE YOU A SENSE OF BELONGING, RELAXING ETC.
I used this question to find out the frequency respondents bought music magazines. I specified in music magazines as
these are what I’m trying to find out about. Most respondents replied with every month. This is interesting as it shows the
audience are very into their music and means that they buy magazines monthly. This shows that if I target my music
magazine to be monthly it will be more popular as none of the respondents bought magazines weekly. This shows that
although my audience like music they feel that buying them weekly is too much for them and as they’re younger may
possibly cutting into their budget as the younger they are the less money they're likely to have. This means monthly
magazines will target this younger audience better. Not many of the respondents never bought music magazines.
Although some people didn’t frequently buy
magazines it shows that they do sometimes buy
music magazines. This shows that music
Magazines are popular to the audience and will
Still buy them even if they’re not frequent buyers.
The audience seem to be music magazines
At least sometimes. This is interesting and shows
That my magazine will have buyers as this
Younger audience is clearly showing that they’re
likely to buy a music magazines if they’re
interested in the music displayed in the magazine.
QUESTION NINE: HOW OFTEN DO
YOU BUY A MUSIC MAGAZINE?
I finalised my survey by making the final question about the audience to see what they're like as a person (which I will find
out more in my interview.) In this question it was found that all the respondents answered this differently. This shows that
the audience are individuals and are like no other person. As they’re all different it is hard to identify one characteristic of
each person. This shows that respondents personalities may differ but may have the same taste in music even though
some are shown to be shy and others sociable. It also shows that the audience have some confident within themselves as
they describe something they identify about themselves. This shows they have confidence in who they are as a person.
Some of the respondents seem to have good confidence in themselves by responding ‘great’ this shows that what the
music magazine consists of will have to
contain items that will entertain this ‘awesome’
Personality. It shows that the audience are all
different yet interesting. This means as all the
people described themselves differently the
Magazine has to be created to suit all these
different people. It shows that the respondents
are a wide range of people who are idfferent
yet are linked together by music taste.
QUESTION TEN: HOW WOULD YOU
DESCRIBE YOURSELF?

Music Magazine Survey: Analysis of results

  • 1. Music Magazine Survey: Analysis of results
  • 2. The majority of the audience were aged between 13-18. This shows a younger target audience for teenagers. This shows that the audience are appealing to younger people. This means that the magazine made will have to target a younger audience which will interest young people rather than older people. The respondents being younger is useful as I want to appeal my magazine to a younger audience and shows that knowing my audience are this age I can focus different conventions in my magazine to appeal them and not the other age. Furthermore, it shows that a younger audience use media platforms like the internet. This is interesting and means I can use media platforms in my magazine as the audience are open towards this as they’re younger meaning they’re willing to try new things like this survey. As most of the respondents are in a teenage age group it means I can use informal language and interesting layouts to appeal to them. This means that there is more creativity with the use of colour as the younger audience are intrigued by new ideas. As they’re younger it makes the audience more approachable to new things. • 3. The gender was quite similar. However it was shown that most of the respondents were female rather than male. Although males did take the survey it shows that females were more willing to participate rather than males. This means that the magazine I will be creating will focus more towards females. I will do this by presenting musicians that more females like rather than males. By doing this I will use easier and somewhat feminine text for the audience to read. Also using gossip of musicians in my magazine will make the audience appreciate it as they’re more willing to read gossip in their magazine rather than males. However, I will make my magazine open to both. I will do this as I want both genders to really enjoy my magazine and if I made it for only females I might lose the audience as females may be disinterested by that. As the music of rock is quite heavy it means females expect more colour denotations of black, red etc. This shows a more neutral colour base for both genders meaning the magazine will feel quite equal to both. There being more female respondents do however show that they’re more likely to try new things rather than males. This means that if I add questionnaires and competitions to my magazine it is likely I will get more responses from females as they seem more likely to reply instead of males. QUESTION TWO: WHAT IS YOUR GENDER?
  • 4. QUESTION THREE: WHAT GENRE OF MUSIC ARE YOU INTERESTED IN? All respondents had different genres of music they were interested in. This shows that the respondents all had different tastes. This is interesting and shows that the respondents were varied and didn’t like the entire same thing. The only genres of music not chosen by any of the respondents were classical and jazz. This shows that none of the audience is interested in this and that these types of music are not popular with younger people. I will not be displaying classical or jazz music because of this result. The most popular genre of music was Rock, Alternative and Heavy metal. This shows that my magazine will be based around the genre of rock. This is useful as this is what genre of music I want to display in my magazine. As it is rock it means all different musicians can be displayed. As this is the most popular genre it makes me specify what genre my magazine will be meaning I will know that Rock will be more popular with my audience rather than country, R&B etc. This means I know how I will be targeting my audience from what Music they’re interested in.
  • 5. On question four I kept my question musical based like the previous question. All respondents listened to music; nobody responded that they never listened to music. This showed that everybody answering has some musical knowledge and enjoy music. This shows that the audience chosen is at least listening to music once per day. This means that the audience will be interested in what the magazine I’m making will include as it has music. Most of the respondents answer that they listen to music for at least 3+ hours per day. This shows music is important for the audience as they're listening to it often. This means the audience know what they’re talking about with music. Furthermore as the audience listen to lots of music this means they will be interested if the music magazine includes a free CD. This will intrigue them as they’re interested into listening to it. The respondents seem to really love music for listening to it so much it seems that they will know knowledge on their music, this means my music magazine will have to be informative for them on the music they enjoy. As they listen to music so much it shows that music is an important aspect of this audience’s life meaning they’re likely to buy a music magazine as they enjoy listening to music often. QUESTION FOUR: HOW OFTEN DO YOU LISTEN TO MUSIC A DAY?
  • 6. QUESTION FIVE: WHY DO YOU LISTEN TO YOUR MUSIC? I wanted to see the respondent’s person opinions on why they personally listen to music. By doing this means I get a verbal response. Verbally most of the respondents said that they found music entertaining. This shows that the audience find it as an entertainment source for when they’re bored or they want to pass the time. This is useful as if this is entertainment for the audience they're likely to want to read them music magazine as it will give secondary entertainment from their music. Furthermore, some of the audience said they listened to their music as ‘escapism’ this shows that music is important to the audience and it gives them a personal connection. For example: using music as the ‘soundtrack to my life’ as one respondent commented shows that music is very important to them and that it reflects who they are. As it is personal to the audience it shows that the audience want the magazine to somewhat connect to them on a personal level for example the musicians personal life may interest the audience as to why they make the music. Also some of the respondents said That music lifts their mood up and makes Them happy. This means the audience want to read more about the music they Listen to as it will make them happy if they Find out about the music that they enjoy.
  • 7. QUESTION SIX: WHAT ARE YOUR FAVOURITE UK MAGAZINES? When asking what the audiences most favourite UK music magazine is the most popular music magazine was Q magazine. This shows that the audience are familiar with one of the most popular magazines. It shows that the audience know what is current and really like the way in which Q Magazine portrays their musicians and articles. This shows that I should somewhat familiarise with Q magazine for my audience as it seems the audience like the way in which the magazines laid out, the structure of text and how it is presented to the audience. The second favourite magazine was Kerrang. This is a rock based music magazine so I can familiarise with making my magazine similar to Kerrang. As this is the audiences second favourite is shows that the audience like to read them music specifically for them. As I am targeting for rock music it means I can familiarise with Kerrang and do similar aspects to my magazine as they’re the same genre as me. As Q Magazine and Kerrang are the most popular it seems that the respondents would be interested in mixing the two magazine ideas together to create one that they will really enjoy.
  • 8. QUESTION SEVEN: WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE IN FUTURE MUSIC MAGAZINES? MORE TALK ABOUT MUSIC, FESTIVALS ETC. In this question I gave my respondents suggestions to what they could answer so it was easier to understand what I was talking about. Most of the respondents said they wanted more talk of: interviews, tour dates and festival information. These are the most frequently wanted things in future magazines. This shows that the audience want to see more of this included in future magazines and they will be more likely to buy a magazine if it includes these things. Mentioning this shows what isn’t being including in magazines now which are disinteresting the audience. As the respondents are quite young wanting to know about music festivals is relevant for my magazine. This shows that the audience use music as a social event and want to use the magazine as a source of information. They also mention wanting interviews. This shows that the audience are interested in the musicians as well as the music they create. This shows that if I include an exclusive Interview the audience are more likely to be interested as they want to read something That they enjoy and it shows that they enjoy Interviews more than review sections of Music magazines.
  • 9. I wanted to see why my audience are interested in the music magazines to see how I should publish the magazine to be appropriate for my audience. Most of the audience said that they read them as they’re interesting to read about their favourite musicians. This shows that the audience use music magazines as a platform for information. This means that my music magazine will have to be very informative about their favourite musicians and what they listen to. This is as the music is very important to the audience and as it is to entertain yet inform them it has to be exciting and current for the audience yet updating them at the same time. Some of the audience said current music magazines update them on the latest news including albums and songs. This shows that the audience want to know more about the music in the magazines rather than the musicians themselves. Most of the responses were similar however some said that they found magazines relaxing. This shows the audience find the magazine as something to do when they’re stressed or want something to take their mind off things. This shows it has to entertain them to relax them into reading it. Some respondents discussed how they didn’t read these magazines. There were not many people who said they didn’t read them, this is good as it shows only a small number of people do not read music magazines. QUESTION EIGHT: WHY DO YOU READ THESE MUSIC MAGAZINES? DOES IT GIVE YOU A SENSE OF BELONGING, RELAXING ETC.
  • 10. I used this question to find out the frequency respondents bought music magazines. I specified in music magazines as these are what I’m trying to find out about. Most respondents replied with every month. This is interesting as it shows the audience are very into their music and means that they buy magazines monthly. This shows that if I target my music magazine to be monthly it will be more popular as none of the respondents bought magazines weekly. This shows that although my audience like music they feel that buying them weekly is too much for them and as they’re younger may possibly cutting into their budget as the younger they are the less money they're likely to have. This means monthly magazines will target this younger audience better. Not many of the respondents never bought music magazines. Although some people didn’t frequently buy magazines it shows that they do sometimes buy music magazines. This shows that music Magazines are popular to the audience and will Still buy them even if they’re not frequent buyers. The audience seem to be music magazines At least sometimes. This is interesting and shows That my magazine will have buyers as this Younger audience is clearly showing that they’re likely to buy a music magazines if they’re interested in the music displayed in the magazine. QUESTION NINE: HOW OFTEN DO YOU BUY A MUSIC MAGAZINE?
  • 11. I finalised my survey by making the final question about the audience to see what they're like as a person (which I will find out more in my interview.) In this question it was found that all the respondents answered this differently. This shows that the audience are individuals and are like no other person. As they’re all different it is hard to identify one characteristic of each person. This shows that respondents personalities may differ but may have the same taste in music even though some are shown to be shy and others sociable. It also shows that the audience have some confident within themselves as they describe something they identify about themselves. This shows they have confidence in who they are as a person. Some of the respondents seem to have good confidence in themselves by responding ‘great’ this shows that what the music magazine consists of will have to contain items that will entertain this ‘awesome’ Personality. It shows that the audience are all different yet interesting. This means as all the people described themselves differently the Magazine has to be created to suit all these different people. It shows that the respondents are a wide range of people who are idfferent yet are linked together by music taste. QUESTION TEN: HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOURSELF?
