- During this session we will discuss and develop authentic responses to these 5 key questions. (responses that have meaning for you in your context of living and working)
- Let’s begin! Today we will navigate through this presentation by responding to key questions. For each key question, you and your colleagues will develop meaningful responses based on the data provided. In addition, you will determine areas where you need more information. Those areas will be your entry points for further investigation and discussion. You will work together to construct your own meaning and you will determine your next steps related to learning and appropriate actions.
- For today, our journey begins at 2002. Although we have had other monumental shifts within our educational system in America for today, we will start here… Other shifts… A Nation at Risk (call for educational reform- increase science and math – danger of falling behind as a world power) Information Age (computers/ technology – still falling behind) – 911 Attack NCLB (political) Call for Change – 21 st Century
- On a national level the partner ship is leading the effort to pull states, business leaders, and politicians together.
- North Carolina was the first state to make a major effort.
- A national – world-wide movement to recognize our world as “global” (connected and interwoven) A move to pull together the fields of education, politics, and business. To Improve our education system by preparing students for 21 st Century work and to increase our graduation rates. Three fields are – business, political, education To prepare workers for the 21 st Century
- The Partnership transforms education through public/private partnerships: Educational Leaders Business Community Teachers Administrators Policymakers
- Businesses and 21st Century States that have joined… Since 2002, the Partnership for 21st Century Skills has been working with states and communities to reinvigorate learning to meet the demands of the 21st century. Based on this work, the Partnership believes there are seven strategies for a successful statewide 21st Century Skills Initiative: High-profile leadership Broad consensus and a shared vision Ongoing professional development in 21st century skills Standards and curriculum aligned with 21st century skills 21st century assessments An effective communications strategy An aggressive implementation strategy Read more about the P21 partner states by browsing the links at the left.

- We will discover reasons why 21 st. Century Skills are so important in this next section.
- First let’s acknowledge that the context of work and of our world has changed. Therefore we must change the learning environments as well.
- Examine our new Contexts… What are some new skills that you see are now required? Global Awareness – Collaboration Critical Thinking Information & Communication Technology (ICT) Literacy Innovation and Improvement Do you have knowledge of what these are ? Do you know what they include? Do you know ways to infuse these skills into your current curriculum? We will only begin this discussion… The fact that we do not know all of these answers is a perfect example of 21 st Century Teaching and learning…. It is all about innovation and creating. It is not about “knowing” and giving the answers. This is a major shift from the old way of teaching and learning. There is no, “one way”, but many ways to get to the answers.
- Divide into groups. Pass out the sheets with charts of data. Read the data sheets in groups and discuss. Have each group respond to the data by answering the questions and responding to share at the end of the work time.
- Collect newspaper want ads pages to post the results on for each group. As an extension… Ask groups to explore the want ads to identify and mark (red marker) the ones that connect with the skills that they are reporting on. This supports the discussion with real data!

- We will discover reasons why 21 st. Century Skills are so important in this next section.
- The new focus on 21 st Century was started to address the needs of our nation’s business- economic, political, and education fields to increase our graduation rates and to prepare workers and leaders with skills for the 21 st . Century. This shared vision for student success is one needed to carry us beyond the 21 st Century. There is an urgency, because even now (as in the past) by the time we begin working on these future skills, it is already too far behind. Technology information has been moving so fast and we are now challenged to catch up! So this Framework is a shared vision to take us into the future…..
- This Framework is represented with a visual that looks like this. We can refer to it as the “rainbow”.
- This framework is represented by the rainbow which represent the student outcomes. These are the skills, knowledge and expertise that students should master to be successful in work and life in the 21 st Century. Under the rainbow are the Five - 21 st Century Critical Supports.
- Framework for 21st Century Learning The framework presents a holistic view of 21st century teaching and learning that combines a discrete focus on 21st century student outcomes (a blending of specific skills, content knowledge, expertise and literacies) with innovative support systems to help students master the multi-dimensional abilities required of them in the 21st century. The key elements of 21st century learning are represented in the graphic and descriptions below. The graphic represents both 21st century skills student outcomes (as represented by the arches of the rainbow) and 21st century skills support systems (as represented by the pools at the bottom). While the graphic represents each element distinctly for descriptive purposes, the Partnership views all the components as fully interconnected in the process of 21st century teaching and learning. Let’s examine the impact the development of the Framework has had for North Carolina.- New Mission – 2006.
- In North Carolina… 2006 new mission was approved.
- With the new Mission, the State Board of Education supported the work of the Center by approving key ongoing initiateves… Learn and Earn, North Carolina Teaching Working Conditions Survey, and the North Carolina Graduation Project.
- Learn and Earn Named among the top 50 programs in the 2008 allows students to attend a high school located on a college campus, and in no more than five years, earn a high school diploma and finish with two years of college or an associate degree, at no cost to the student. Currently there are 42 Learn and Earn high schools across the state and by 2008-09, there will be 63 such schools.

- The North Carolina State Board of Education charged the North Carolina Professional Teaching Standards Commission to align the Core Standards for the Teaching Profession (1997) with the newly adopted mission. To this end, Commission members, 16 practicing educators from across the state, considered what teachers need to know and be able to do in 21st century schools. This document contains the aligned standards adopted by the NorthCarolina State Board of Education in June 2007 .
- Our job at the local level…
- We modified our goals to reflect the 21 st Century Framework language… Now, we must make these come to life!

- The future is now!... Imagine the possibilities…
- There are many of our current and new initiatives which have been outgrowths of this Framework… A few of these include… Gov. Easley’s Teacher Working Conditions Survey, The Graduation Project Requirements, The new North Carolina Professional Standards for teachers and the new School Executive Standards for administrators which many of you were trained on this summer. The work of the Partnership will guide the work of the educator for years to come and that is why I have chosen to highlight the 21 st Century Framework during our retreat.
