How To Clean The Strings On A Kantele

  1. 1. 1. The strings sound good when they are clean. You can use paraffin oil or sewing-machine oil, for example, to protect the strings against rust.
  2. 2. 2. If there is rust (or other impurities) on the strings, you can grind it away with extra fine (grade 0000) steel wool or water sandpaper (1200.)
  3. 3. 3. When using steel wool, you can put a few drops of paraffin oil on it before grinding. (If you put too much oil, the string will sound stifled.)
  4. 4. 4. Wrap the steel wool around the string and grind carefully. (You can feel the roughness of the rust on the string against your fingers.)
  5. 5. 5. If you are grinding with water sandpaper, use it dry and…
  6. 6. … after grinding, wipe the string with a slightly oiled, soft cloth. (Wipe the strings every now and then with the oiled cloth - without grinding - to protect them against rust. Rebember to wash and dry your hands before playing!  )
