Need low-cost devices to collect physiological information
Less than $10 per device in steady-state production
Devices/Sensors must be rugged and robust
Need to be able to withstand high use and require minimal repairs
System must be designed for Community Health Workers
                 Design for low computer literacy

Bottom Line is that the devices should be

                     SIMPLE
                                     easy to use and sustainable

Assessment

   1. While creating biomedical devices for resource-
   constrained environments, examples provide students
with starting points for design space exploration by
making them aware of pertinent factors for
   consideration.

   2. The design tool enables students to have articulate a
well-informed rationale backing every decision made
   during the design process.

   3. The design tool facilitates structured documentation of
design decisions and design evolution over time.
Assessment – Initial Results

   Focus Groups
   • Brainstorming
   • Examples
   • Past Experiences
   • Team Work
   • Empathy

While creating biomedical devices for resource- constrained environments, examples provide students with starting points for design space exploration by making them aware of pertinent factors for consideration. 2. The design tool enables students to have articulate a well-informed rationale backing every decision made during the design process. 3. The design tool facilitates structured documentation of design decisions and design evolution over time.

Notes de l'éditeur

  1. My thesis is slightly unconventional
  2. The technology landscape in a developing world hospital can be bleak. This photo taken from Mt. Meru Hospital in Arusha, Tanzania, illustrates a typical operating room in a donation-dependent hospital. Notice that there are no overhead operating room lights, only a small floor lamp. The large windows are required because the power frequently fails, rendering even the floor lamp useless. The World Health Organization estimates that international donors from developed countries fund nearly 80% of health care equipment in developing countries. Almost 70% of the donated equipment is not in use because of lack of maintenance or spare parts, or because local personnel do not know how to use it, representing a tragic waste of potentially valuable resources. This disconnect arises because equipment from developed countries is designed in a context that is substantially different than that of developing countries with respect to resources, infrastructure, social and behavioral norms, and the healthcare environment.
  3. Pan-american health organization“One interview revealed that a hospital found it easier to request a new oxygen concentrator from their European sponsor then to spend the $5 to repair the concentrator they owned.” In order to develop the most successful products, a designer must have a thorough understanding of his or her customers’ true needs. (Beyer and Holtzblatt 1997) Intricate details about the resources, infrastructures, and social and behavioral norms of a community can directly impact a product’s ability to be accepted and utilized. When working to create products for the developing world, designers often struggle to grasp what the true requirements of the context entail because they are used to designing for the culture in which they live, and not one totally foreign to them. The developing world has a unique set of challenges but by addressing the various constraints and using them to drive the design process, products are more likely to meet the needs of the target population and thus be competitive and useful.

  5. Design experience
  6. WHY EXAMPLES ARE IMPORTANT Incorporating features of similar designs or drawing inspiration from prior knowledge and experiences is an essential step in the process of making decisions and moving towards a final product. (Bonnardel 1999) Examples provide a starting point for design exploration and help designers to connect theory and practice, and further develop various aspects of the actual functioning of the device in a specific context
  7. The design tool is a systematic series of questions and real-world examples that incorporate an expansive list of concerns ranging from social and cultural to structural and electrical criteria. For each question asked, resources are provided to aid in design exploration, and guide an engineer to make effective trade-offs and reach an equilibrium between various factors (For example, reaching a balance between price point, materials used, and sustainability concerns for the specific users and their context). the resources serve to demonstrate how a specific choice can have implications for other aspects of a design. From a design standpoint, it is invaluable to be able to see the interconnections between components of a design, and to see the connections between a biomedical device and the larger context (social, cultural, economic) in which it will be deployed.
  8. System Integration revolves around ensuring that the overall product design meets all necessary functional and non-functional requirements, functions well with the Mashavu system and is affordable and appropriate for users in the specific context. System integration encompasses the technical interface, price-point management and physiological factors.
  9. Mashavu devices interface with the computer via a LabVIEW Virtual Instrument (VI) that successfully captures the desired measurement and provides a front panel that is usable by both the patient and the operator. The LabVIEW graphical programming environment is used to develop the software routines necessary for data acquisition, display, analysis, and calibration of biomedical devices. However, these design factors are relevant for any software platform that is employed for the biomedical devices.
  10. The hardware of the device consists of all components that comprise the body of the device and protect the chosen sensor.
  11. Testing plans must be devised and implemented to examine accuracy, precision, repeatability, reliability, hygiene issues, mechanical problems, failure modes, shock resistance, calibration needs, maintenance needs, functionality in a dusty environment and other indicators of the success (or failure) of the device.
  12. Hypothesis Early results-ongoing processGoal is to make it a tool that accepts external examples want people to participate and help grow the data base further
