Editor's Notes
This is a new project that we are working on.
Health care is one of those issues that will face all of us. These are staggering numbers and will only go up. Health care discussions are devicive.
Behind these numbers are individuals. Parents, children
Mothers who face extreme challenges. We all have these stories.
often suffer from a wide range of emotions as they face one of the most challenging and profound experiences of their lives. Where often times they are scared and most venerable.
This means that we are not soley focused on a technological advancement. Some students through an in depth needs assessment discover other areas of improvement that are not technology focused but more on a process.
It is a structured approach to generating and developing ideas. It involves 5 steps to gain insight and turn that insight into real ideas and innovations. Design Thinking is a mindset. Thinking like a designer cantransform the way you approach the world when imagining and creating new solutions for the future: it’s about being aware of the world around you, believing that you play a role in shaping that world, and taking action toward a more desirable future. Design Thinking gives you faith in your creative abilities and a process to take action through when faced with a difficult challenge.
4 characteristics of design thinking.
Empathy, It is about understanding people, context and meaning of individuals in their workplace, etc.. People centric (customer etc) Emotional connection as well so that it goes beyond the functional Design Thinking begins by understanding the needs and motivations of people— You talk with these people, you listen to them, you consider how best to help them do good work. Design Thinking begins from this place of deep empathy and builds on the power of these empathetic questions and insights
Thinking creates a real space to try something new. It gives you permission to fail and to learn from your mistakes, because you come up with new ideas, get feedback on them, then iterate. Given the range of needs your students have, your work will never be finished or “solved.” It is always in progress. Yet there is an underlying expectation that innovators must strive for perfection, that they may not make mistakes, that they should always be flawless role models. This kind of expectation makes it hard to take risks.creates options rather than finding. Explores a broad range of possibilities and combines these into new ways that often take the best of many different pieces. Mashups to create something new. Combining both sides of the brain.
Design Thinking is the fundamental belief that we all can create change—no matter how big a problem, how little time or how small a budget. No matter what constraints exist around you, designing can be an enjoyable process. In short, Design Thinking is the confidence that new, better things are possible and that you can make them happen. AFuzzy problems with indeterminate boundaries wicked problems that have multiple solutions. Balance of multi-perameters to find best fit
Design Thinking requires conversation, critique and all-out teamwork. And that’s something that might be a bit of a shift, because despite the fact that educators are surrounded by people all day long, teaching remains an often solitary profession. Still, addressing complex (or even not-so-complex) challenges benefits significantly from the views of multiple perspectives, and others’ creativity bolstering your ownTakes from many different opinions, backgrounds, beliefs etc.. Includes all stakeholders and spectrums of thoughts
To empty their cup. To start anew and try to break down the way that they typically problem solve. To challenge their assumptions. To cross a threshold. To mark a new beginning.
To become a beginner again. To see things from a new perspective. I give them many assignments that are just to challenge their perception about a particular topic. Seeing the subltley in the wear patterns in a elevator. Attending a different religions church service,
To build a culture and cohesive group that likes each other and has bounded over a shared experience.
If we are asking students to risk it is very difficult to do when you are nervous unsure in an intimidating enviornement.
Have all the students build empathy capacity through a series of exercises both for the patients and for the physcians, nurses administrators family etc..
