DEFINITION OF WRITING
WRITING ::
WAY TO PRODUCE LANGUAGE THAT
COMES FROM OUR THOUGHT USING
PEN AND PAPER
The best way to teach writing?
• No consensus
• Process is important
• Children need a time, place, and reason to write
• Good instruction is crucial
The key to children learning to write well is good instruction.
Elements of good instruction
• An environment that supports writing (with space for children to
write and the tools to do so)
• Teachers who read with a ‘writer’s eye’ (so they can point out strategies
that young writers used effectively)
• Teachers who model good instruction (so children will see how one goes
about writing)
• Lots of opportunities to practice, accompanied by corrective feedback
(praise the expressive aspect of the task, while helping
the child form letters and write accurately and well)
Some of considerations are needed by teacher in
teaching writing
 Encouraging student participation
 Target area
 Students’ facilities
 Topic that can be employed to ensure students participation
 An enthusiasm and effective learning
 Giving correction
How to Generate Writing Idea
 Brainstorming
 Free Writing
 Journalistic Questions
 Cluster Mapping
 Flow Charting
 Double / Triple Entry
Teaching Structure
 What are the objectives of this class
 What type of learning background do to the learners have
 What learning materials and resources are available
 What kind of learning style does each student have
Introducing Grammar
 Inductive
The bootom up approach. Students learning while doing the
exercises.
 Deductive
The top down approach. The teacher explains rules to the
students.
Teaching Vocabulary
Some problems when “I know that word” be spoken
Can we also :
 Bring it to mind when we need it ?
 Use it by grammatical form ?
 Pronounce properly ?
 Spell correctly ?
 Use it with the words it usually goes with ?
 Use it at the appropiate level of formality ?
 Relate it to something ?
 Be aware of its connotations and associations ?
Teaching Vocabulary Strategies
o Pre-teaching Vocabulary words
It helps learners focus on the subject and teacher can predict the content
of the text using the target vocabulary
o Keyword Method
Teacher give the students “word clue” to help them understand the new
word that given before
o Word Map
Branching off all the words in the passage or text
Some Activities for Reviewing and Revising Lexis
Nought and Crosses
Back to The Board
Board Run
Chain Story
Waiting for Late Arrivals
Click Your Fingers
Throw Them Away
