1. Memorial Day Thoughts
I usually write a piece for Memorial Day. I didn't write one this year because I had written a
memorial piece just this past Veteran's Day. But, within minutes of last week's item posting on
May 30, three things happened that made me regret my decision. First, I received word that a
fellow Vietnam veteran had died a few days before. Then, I received a Memorial Day ecard from
another friend. And, third, between May 31 and June 4, emails from regular readers filled my
inbox wanting to know why I had not written one. It is ALWAYS fitting to remember our military
personnel that have died in the defense of this nation. I could NEVER forget it. I rarely talk about
my own ventures into the world of combat. In fact, most of us older coots go...show more content...
I revere Memorial Day, but it isn't the only day that I remember our war–dead. Not a day of my life
has passed since then that I don't recall the horrors of decades ago. And, while it doesn't happen
with persistency any longer, I still bolt upright in bed in a heart–pounding cold sweat. Only I'm
clutching my pillow and, mercifully, I realize that the blood–soaked lifeless soldier's body and the
horrible stench of thick, sticky, bloody goo are, once again, only a nightmare. And, somehow, I'm
able to fall back to sleep. An image of a young woman lying prone and sobbing inconsolably
before the grave marker of her beloved at a veteran's cemetery set me off big time. And, we'd
better understand that this is only the tip of an emotional iceberg of deeply rooted grief that
loved ones of fallen troops must somehow get through. It doesn't go away. I still feel it after
several decades. As I finish typing this, my eyes are trying to see through a wall of flowing water,
a stark reminder that learning to live without our loved ones is not the same as forgetting them. As
long as we live, we don't forget... EVER! We possess the most powerful and dedicated military in
the world. We're deeply indebted to all currently serving as well as to all that have had their lives
taken from them in the battle to keep us strong and free–I've never met anyone eagerly awaiting the
chance to "GIVE" their lives. I certainly know that I wasn't. But, with the same level of fervor,

4. Memorial Day Short Story
It was early Friday afternoon, the start of Memorial Day weekend and I almost lost my best
friend. Now usually on Memorial Day weekend my family and close family friends go camping
but this year the other family couldn't go so we decided to call it off. Not having anything to do
that day I decided to take my dog for a walk. My dog is a Terrier Poodle mix so she's not very big.
Her name is Pepper and she's just your average lap dog but she's my best friend. So i put her leash
on her and asked my little sister is she wanted to go and she said no, so it was just Pepper and I.
We made it two houses down before the neighbor's German Shepherd came to meet us. There was
nothing to worry about though because this is a nice dog, so I thought. Before I knew what was
happening the German Shepherds jaw crushed down on Peppers back and stomach, picked her up,
shook her like a chew toy, and threw her. The...show more content...
I yelled for her to come quick scared out of my mind to the point of tears still trying to process
everything. I will never forget the look my mom and brother gave me when they saw her. My
mom immediately took her from me and told my brother to start the car. The neighbor who
witnessed it came over to see the damage, he felt horrible and said he would pay the vet bill. At
this point my brain finally processed everything that was going on and I broke down into tears. I
cried and cried and just couldn't stop. It had just happened on my watch and I had felt it was all
my fault. If only I had done something slightly different. If only I hadn't went on a walk. If only
we were packing our bags to get ready for camping. If she died it could only be my fault. I truly
thought I had lost my best friend. She had to have major surgery but she made it through. She
came home and could barely stand for two weeks. Today, she is alive and well. Now we never go on
a walk without mace and we carry her past the house where the dog

5. Memorial Day Meaning
Memorial Day On May 25th is the Memorial Day. And I normally do my homework on that day.
However, Memorial Day is not for us to go out and play. It got a deeper meaning. I started
realizing the true meaning of Memorial Day until I was 12. Memorial Day was created due to the
civil war at 1868 originally called "Decoration Day". People only honored those who died in the
Union War. At the end of the 20th century, it was finally established as a day to honor all americans
died in the military service. People should not spend their time to play or shop during the Memorial
Day. Instead, they should pictured the mens and womens who fought for us. And they should
imagine the feeling of the family of those dead people. They should also be thankful for

Oh Memorial day, we remember those who died fighting for our country. Memorial Day officially
begin in May 1868, when we honored Civil War soldiers at Arlington National Cemetary by putting
flowers on there graves. After world War 1, the holiday changed to honor Americans who died

7. Memorial Day Speech
Memorial Day is a federal holiday in the United States for remembering the people who died
while serving in the country's armed forces.[1] The holiday, which is observed every year on the
last Monday of May,[2] originated as Decoration Day after the American Civil War in 1868, when
the Grand Army of the Republic, an organization of Union veterans founded in Decatur, Illinois,
established it as a time for the nation to decorate the graves of the war dead with flowers.[3] By the
20th century, competing Union and Confederate holiday traditions, celebrated on different days, had
merged, and Memorial Day eventually extended to honor all Americans who died while in the
military service.[1] It typically marks the start of the summer vacation season, while Labor Day
marks its end.
Many people visit cemeteries and memorials, particularly to honor those who have died in military
service. Many volunteers place an American flag on...show more content...
In cases involving a family graveyard where remote ancestors as well as those who were deceased
more recently are buried, this may take on the character of an extended family reunion to which
some people travel hundreds of miles. People gather on the designated day and put flowers on
graves and renew contacts with relatives and others. There often is a religious service and a
picnic–like "dinner on the ground," the traditional term for a potluck meal in which people used to
spread the dishes out on sheets or tablecloths on the grass. It is believed that this practice began
before the American Civil Warand thus may reflect the real origin of the "memorial day" idea.[4]
Memorial Day is not to be confused with Veterans Day; Memorial Day is a day of remembering
the men and women who died while serving, while Veterans Day celebrates the service of all U.S.

9. Memorial Day
3:00 P.M., the frigid rain darted down similar to ice shards and I could hear the merciless howl of
the wind. Every step soaked my shoes as I walked down the flooded brick road, I felt myself
beginning to drag my feet through the icy water. In spite of the weather, today is quite a memorial
day, my war acquaintance back approximately 40 years ago has died peacefully in his deathbed,
even the weather reflects the atmosphere flawlessly. 15 minutes till the funeral starts, I began to
sprint and on every step a splash of water shot up, soaking my pants. Everlasting, the consuming
darkness shadowed me and I felt the presences of a haunting soul lingering behind me. Similar to a
magnet, I attract lifeless souls surrounding me, one of the numerous

10. Memorial Day
A Game to Remember Family is the most important thing to me. They are always going to be
there for you when no one else is. Unless tragedy strikes and turns your whole world around. Every
year for Memorial Day my family gets together and has a big picnic and we go to a parade in
Pecatonica, Illinois. This is where most of us grew up so it just felt like going home whenever
we went. My sister and I got put into Foster Care at the age of two. We rarely got to see our
mother and a lot of other family members, so days like this were very exciting because we got to
see everyone. This filled me up with excitement.
Memorial Day of 2012 was the one that stands out the most, and I did not even get to spend it with
family. I had a baseball tournament...show more content...
We started off really strong and the score was 0–0 through the first two innings. Before I even got
the chance to go bat, I heard my phone start to ring in my bag. I was not up for two more batters
so I answered it. It was my sister and when she answered the phone she was crying. That's when
all of the thoughts started to run through my head because I knew instantly something was wrong.
The first thoughts that went through my head was my great grandma or grandpa got hurt
because they were the oldest and that's who we lived with. I was trying to figure out what was
wrong with her, but she could not stop crying enough to even talk to me. My emotions at this
point are all over the place and I could not think straight. She then hand the phone to my great
grandma so she could talk to me. I asked her what was wrong and all she said was, " Something
bad happened in the family, we all love you and we want you to do good today so focus on
baseball and do good." And all I heard was the dial tone at the other end of the phone. The silence
just made me keep thinking of the worst possible situations. The screams from my teammates
telling me that I am next to bat brought me back from my thoughts and I did what she told me to
do and focused on baseball. It was time for my first at bat and I was shaking with fear, but what
happened next, no one in the stadium
