Activity Based Learning Experiences

2. For 2013 and beyond, students in Years 8 – 12 will have the
opportunity to select an interest based camp for Opportunity
Week (Term 2 Week 2).
These will be mixed grade programs, replacing the current
‘grade based’ camp programs.
These programs are designed to capture and enrich the
passions and interests of secondary students, with
opportunities to explore a variety of areas.
Year 7 students will participate in their orientation camp early
in 2013, and may participate in Opportunity Week by choice
(at additional cost).
3. At this stage, we are surveying students to identify areas of
opportunity as programs for 2013.
This involves completing a short online survey to express a
level of interest in each option.
From this, students will be given a formal survey early in 2013
to nominate their preferences for Opportunity Week.
Please be aware that activities will only run if enough interest
has been shown, and program details are subject to change.
4. 1. Expeditions
a) Bronze expedition – a two night program, involving an
overnight hike, learning to navigate, cooking and camping
outdoors. Suitable for all students in Years 7-10. For students
over 14, this could be considered part of the Bronze
‘Adventurous Journey’ component of the Duke of Edinburgh’s
Award Program.
b) Silver expedition – a two night hike, involving hiking and
kayaking. Suitable for all students in Years 9-12, this could be
considered part of the Silver ‘Adventurous Journey’.
c) Gold expedition – a high impact, week long hike exploring the
Cradle Mountain region of Tasmania. Suitable for students in
Years 10-12.
5. 2. Passion and Opportunity
a) Sport – Hear from nutritionists, sports psychologists and coaches.
Participate in team specific training and games as well as activities
such as rock climbing and high ropes . Separate Year 7-9 and 10-12
programs.
b) History and Civics – a Canberra based experience to explore the
history of Australia throughout the nation’s capital.
c) Visual Arts – To be held at NBCS. Workshops, creative time and a
visit to galleries in the city.
d) Performing Arts/Musical – To be held at NBCS for elective music
and musical students. Workshops, creative time including
recording. Separate strands for Music and Musical.
e) Food Technology – Visit factories/kitchens/restaurants, cooking
classes, learn about nutrition and health.
6. e) Design/IT – Hear from designers/IT experts. Work on a
design project. Opportunity to train with NBCS IT dept.
f) Enterprise – Learn about entrepreneurship through guest
speakers. Visit start ups. ‘The Apprentice’ TV show style
format.
g) Study Camp – HSC Study camp – time to study and revise for
Year 11 ASP + Year 12 students.
h) Marine Environment – Marine ecology, snorkelling and
aquatic activities.
7. i) Surf Development – Instruction from experts and coaches.
For advanced surfers/bodyboarders.
j) Young Writers – Listen to talks by authors. Write and publish
(online) a short story. Tour the State Library and visit Fairfax
media.
k) Media – Specialising in video filming and editing. Learn from
industry experts. Visit other activities during the day to film
and then edit footage.
8. 3. Social Justice, Service and Faith
a) Sydney City – A social justice camp that provides awareness
and opportunity relating to inner city issues.
b) Moree – A social justice camp that provides awareness and
opportunity relating to issues involving Indigenous
Australians.
c) Soul – A faith based program that develops your relationship
with God and others. Visit different Churches and ministries.
Strands include worship leading, Bible studies and preaching.
9. • Mentors will provide time for students to complete a survey
to express interest in each option.
• Early next year, students will be asked to identify their
preferences to determine placement for Opportunity Week
programs
