1. 1.
 2. 2. Important questions to ask yourself:
Where are you in your company’s succession plan?
Does your current boss and her boss support your growth and development?
Do you have a structured development plan for your current role and for future ones?
Do you have a mentor outside of your department who is more senior than you, well respected within the firm/industry and that you can speak openly and honestly with?
Are you involved with important initiatives and projects going on within the company or the industry?
Do you belong to professional organizations and are you actively involved with them other than attending meetings?
Where do you want to be in five years?
Where does your company see you in five years?
Do you have a plan to get there? Who is managing that plan?
3. 3. Consider this –
Career development is a critical life process that every one of us should take ownership of.
Self-discovery is at the root of a successful career; knowing where your strengths and weaknesses lie is not a cliché.
Positioning yourself as an expert in your field, taking advantage of the current programs and people you have available to you in your current position and reaching out to your industry and community is crucial in career development.
Communicating with your boss, their boss(es), peers, clients, subordinates, family, friends and others about your career intentions/goals and gaining their support is imperative.
CareerIQ is a tool that can help you bridge the gap between your company’s development programs, or lack of, and your career development and most importantly - .
